This paper is concerned with the identification problems of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems with randomly missing output data. Since one local linearized model cannot capture the global dynamics of the nonlinear industrial process, the multiple-model LPV model in which the global model is constructed by smoothly weighted combination of multiple local models is considered here. The problem of missing output variables data is commonly encountered in practice. In order to handle the multiple-model identification problems of LPV systems with incomplete data, the local model is taken to have a finite impulse response (FIR) model structure and the generalized expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is adopted to estimate the unknown parameters of the global LPV model. To avoid the problems of ill-conditioned matrices and high sensitivity of parameters to noise, the prior information on the coefficients of each local FIR model is employed to construct the prior probability of unknown parameters. Then the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimates of the global model parameters are derived via the generalized EM algorithm. The numerical example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present the solution of a highly nonlinear fluid dynamics in a low Prandtl number regime, typical for metal-like materials, as defined in the call for contributions to a numerical benchmark problem for 2D columnar solidification of binary alloys. The solution of such a numerical situation represents the first step towards understanding the instabilities in a more complex case of macrosegregation. Design/methodology/ approach - The involved temperature, velocity and pressure fields are represented through the local approximation functions which are used to evaluate the partial differential operators. The temporal discretization is performed through explicit time stepping. Findings - The performance of the method is assessed on the natural convection in a closed rectangular cavity filled with a low Prandtl fluid. Two cases are considered, one with steady state and another with oscillatory solution. It is shown that the proposed solution procedure, despite its simplicity, provides stable and convergent results with excellent computational performance. The results show good agreement with the results of the classical finite volume method and spectral finite element method. Originality/value - The solution procedure is formulated completely through local computational operations. Besides local numerical method, the pressure velocity is performed locally also, retaining the correct temporal transient. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper investigates the setpoints compensation for a class of complex industrial processes. Plants at the device layer are controlled by the local regulation controllers, and a multirate output feedback control approach for setpoint compensation is proposed such that the subsystems can reach the dynamically changed setpoints and the given economic objective can also be tracked via certain economic performance index (EPI). First, a sampled-data multivariable direct output feedback proportional integral (PI) controller is designed to regulate the performance of the subsystems. Second, the outputs and control inputs of the plants at the device layer are sampled at operation layer sampling time to form an EPI. Thus the multirate problem is solved by a lifting method. Third, static setpoints are generated by real time optimization (RTO) and the dynamic setpoints are calculated by the compensator according to the error between the EPI and objective at each operation layer step. Finally, a rougher flotation process model is employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The class of isotherm lumped process systems with constant overall mass in each of its balance volumes is considered in this paper. It is shown that the convection and transfer mechanisms can be described by a mass action law chemical reaction network (MAL CRN) with only linear kinetics where the in- and outflow terms are represented using the zero complex. This gives rise to a convection and transfer reaction sub-graph that connects atomic complexes consisting of the components in the balance volumes of the system. The real chemical reactions in each of the balance volumes can be described by their own CRNs, where the chemical reaction sub-graphs may be disconnected from the convection and transfer reaction sub-graph when nonlinear reactions occur. In the case of chemical reactions with a finite number of steady state points, the underlying linear dynamical system enables us to construct a dynamically similar linear overall reaction graph for the whole process system. The resulting overall reaction graph can be used for structural stability analysis by applying its graph theoretical properties.

Component mass conservation gives a linear first integral to the dynamic reaction kinetic equations and greatly influences the set of admissible reactions. Therefore, mass conservation can be related to the deficiency of the reaction network and thus to its dynamic properties. In particular, it is shown that a mass conserving CRN without isomers and with a full rank complex composition matrix has zero deficiency. The concepts and results are illustrated on the example of the original and the lumped version of Michaelis-Menten kinetics.

We introduce a simple approach to account for the ATP consumption and production in the case of mass action models of metabolic pathways including protein turnover. Under some simplifying assumptions, the method makes it possible to characterize the optimal rate of enzyme synthesis if the substrate concentrations and other rate constants are known. Furthermore we demonstrate that the proposed approach is capable of the comparison of the efficiency of different feedback laws in dynamic environment, considering time-varying substrate concentration.

In this paper, we consider the realizability problem of n-port resistive networks containing 2n terminals. A necessary and sufficient condition for any real symmetric matrix to be realizable as the admittance of an n-port resistive network containing 2n terminals is obtained. The condition is based on the existence of a parameter matrix. We then focus on a three-port resistive network containing six terminals. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived for any real symmetric matrix to be realizable as the admittance of a three-port resistive network containing six terminals and at most five positive elements, whose topological structure is properly restricted.

This paper presents a new multiobjective bio-inspired algorithm based on membrane computing (MOBIAMC). Similar to the single objective bio-inspired algorithm based on membrane computing (BIAMC), MOBIAMC has a netted membrane structure. Most rules are different from those used in BIAMC. The proposed algorithm applies no operation on keeping the uniformity and variety of candidate solution set or non-dominate solution set in the process of approaching to the true Pareto-optimal front due to its parallel and distributed computation. The comparisons with three multiobjective evolutionary algorithms illuminate that the proposed algorithm is simple and computes fast with high precision in approaching to the true Pareto-optimal fronts of eight benchmark multiobjective optimization functions. © 2012 IEEE.

The performance of two pressure-velocity coupling strategies, associated with the primitive variable solution of incompressible Newtonian fluid with the meshless Local Radial Basis Function Collocation Method (LRBFCM), is compared with respect to computational efficiency, stability, accuracy and spatial convergence. The LRBFCM is structured with multiquadrics on five noded support domains. The explicit time stepping is used. The Backward- Facing Step problem (BFS) has been selected as a benchmark problem, previously tackled by several numerical methods. The semi-local fractional step method (FSM) and completely local pressure-velocity couplings (LPVC) are compared. The numerical results are validated against previously published data. The results are represented and compared in terms of a convergence plot of the reattachment position. We show that both approaches provide reasonable results;however, LVPC is less computationally complex and less stable in comparison to FSM. © 2012 WIT Press.

In this paper we propose a novel colored timed Petri net modelling approach for model structure validation of cell signaling pathways. The aim is to distinguish between models of different structures based on typically qualitative, roughly detailed measurement data. In this approach, tokens are present all the time at all of the places, and their color corresponds to the actual quantized activation state of the signaling component. The activation states are updated according to the progression of the signal through the signaling network. We demonstrate the results on a signaling network, which describes the interaction of fast (G protein coupled) and slow ( β -arrestin coupled) transmission.
