Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) has been well studied in recent years. Most related research efforts focused on designing and learning effective descriptors to characterize a local interest point. However, how to identify stable local interest points is still a very challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a set of differential features, and based on them we adopt a data-driven approach to learn a ranking function to sort local interest points according to their stabilities across images containing the same visual objects. Compared with the handcrafted rule-based method used by the standard SIFT algorithm, our algorithm substantially improves the stability of detected local interest point on a very challenging benchmark dataset, in which images were generated under very different imaging conditions. Experimental results on the Oxford and PASCAL databases further demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithm on both object image retrieval and category recognition. © 2011 IEEE.

In terms of the difficulty of vehicle tracking in complex environment of the visual surveillance system, an object tracking algorithm is proposed for the applications in practical visual surveillance systems for intelligent traffic. A block-based Gaussian mixture background modeling method for object detection is presented to reduce the computational complexity of moving vehicle object abstraction. An adaptive tracking algorithm fused with color features and texture features is described to better adapt the traffic scene variation. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively deal with the complex urban traffic conditions and the tracking performance is better than the conventional particle filter method and single feature based non-adaptive object tracking method.

Healthcare Interchange Exchange (HIE) is set of healthcare entities that link regions and nations around the world to share healthcare information about patients. HIE provides a unified interface to various stakeholders to access patient data. For example, individuals want to access personal data, practitioners want to import their patient data from Personal Health Records (PHR) and researchers want to access anonymized patient data for research purposes with ensured individual privacy. Keeping in view requirements of various stakeholders it is challenging to design an HIE system that ensures the security and privacy of patient information, such that the health records remain interoperable and scalable. This paper proposes, an HIE framework that will provide secure access to patient data and adhere to the interoperability rules. Implementation of l-diversity algorithm ensures individual privacy especially when the data is made available publicly for statistical analysis.

This paper presents a discriminative training (DT) approach to irrelevant variability normalization (IVN) based training of feature transforms and hidden Markov models for large vocabulary continuous speech recognition. A speaker-clustering based method is used for acoustic sniffing and maximum mutual information (MMI) is used as a training criterion. Combined with unsupervised adaptation of feature transforms, the IVN-based DT approach achieves a 14.5% relative word error rate reduction over an MMI-trained baseline system on a Switchboard-1 conversational telephone speech transcription task.

Greece, via its PRODEX membership intends to meaningfully participate to the instrument development of a flagship ESA mission, the Solar Orbiter (SolO). This involvement pertains to hardware development for SolO's Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX), namely, STIX's movable attenuator. SolO will allow close-up and high-latitude studies of our mother star, the Sun, based mostly on remote-sensing measurements (imaging). STIX is a critical SolO instrument, enabling one of its major science goals: understanding and acceleration of electrons at the Sun and their transport into interplanetary space. The attenuator, or shutter, that will be developed by the Greek team, is a critical component of the STIX instrument. Attenuators are dictated by the substantial dynamical range of incident X-ray fluxes from solar flares: the largest X-ray flares can give as many as 10 5 more count rates in X-ray photons compared to those of the smallest microflare that STIX can detect. lt is proposed that two mechanisms are developed for a comparative study. First, a mechanism based on sensitive Shape Memory Alloy actuators and, second, one based on a piezoelectric actuator module. Both mechanisms will be designed and manufactured and then tested in vacuum and alternating high-low temperature conditions. Evaluation of reliability and accuracy in assembly and operation will follow. A vibrating table will be used for the dynamical analysis of the mechanism and independent strength tests of the various parts of the mechanism will follow.

Designing to support motivation is an increasingly important issue, especially as pervasive technologies are used to facilitate various healthy behaviour changes. There are many motivation theories but these do not map specifically to inform design. In 'Motivating Mobility' we explore the lived experiences of motivation of people with stroke, in order to design rehabilitation technologies. Motivation varies between people, between contexts and over time and can be 'difficult to express', particularly for those with communication problems. We describe development of a theoretically based toolkit, principled in both content and form, and using multiple modes of communication, aimed at gathering motivational requirements in order to inspire design. We show use of the toolkit, discuss the rich data collected and reflect on how well the approach works and ties requirements, via their elicitation tool, back to theory. This toolkit has potential to inform design for motivational effect in similar pervasive health applications.

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies different components of autonomic application management in Grids. We also survey several representative Grid systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the similarities and differences of state-of-the-art technologies utilized in autonomic application management from the perspective of Grid computing, but also identifies the areas that require further research initiatives. © 2010 IEEE.

A unified character-based tagging framework for chinese word segmentation

Chinese word segmentation is an active area in Chinese language processing though it is suffering from the argument about what precisely is a word in Chinese. Based on corpus-based segmentation standard, we launched this study. In detail, we regard Chinese word segmentation as a character-based tagging problem. We show that there has been a potent trend of using a character-based tagging approach in this field. In particular, learning from segmented corpus with or without additional linguistic resources is treated in a unified way in which the only difference depends on how the feature template set is selected. It differs from existing work in that both feature template selection and tag set selection are considered in our approach, instead of the previous feature template focus only technique. We show that there is a significant performance difference as different tag sets are selected. This is especially applied to a six-tag set, which is good enough for most current segmented corpora. The linguistic meaning of a tag set is also discussed. Our results show that a simple learning system with six n-gram feature templates and a six-tag set can obtain competitive performance in the cases of learning only from a training corpus. In cases when additional linguistic resources are available, an ensemble learning technique, assistant segmenter, is proposed and its effectiveness is verified. Assistant segmenter is also proven to be an effective method as segmentation standard adaptation that outperforms existing ones. Based on the proposed approach, our system provides state-of-the-art performance in all 12 corpora of three international Chinese word segmentation bakeoffs. © 2010 ACM 1530-0226/2010/06-ART5 $10.00.

We present an investigation into the genotype-phenotype map in Position Independent Grammatical Evolution (πGE). Previous studies have shown πGE to exhibit a performance increase over standard Grammatical Evolution (GE). The only difference between the two approaches is in how the genotype-phenotype mapping process is performed. GE uses a leftmost non terminal expansion, while πGE evolves the order of mapping as well as the content. In this study, we use the idea of focused search to examine which aspect of the πGE mapping process provides the lift in performance over standard GE by applying our approaches to three benchmark problems taken from specialised literature. We examined the traditional πGE approach and compared it to two setups which examined the extremes of mapping order search and content search, and against setups with varying ratios of content and order search. In all of these tests a purely content focused πGE was shown to exhibit a performance gain over the other setups. © 2010 IEEE.
