In this study, we aim to develop a robust model capable of accurately extracting symptoms from clinical texts written in the Slovenian language. Our methodology involves several steps to achieve this objective. Initially, we identify datasets containing clinical texts in English and select a specialized model designed for symptom extraction from these texts. Then, we annotate the datasets and undertake the translation process into Slovenian, ensuring the preservation of annotations to maintain data integrity. Utilizing the translated dataset, we proceed to fine-tune the selected model specifically for Slovenian texts. Despite our efforts, optimal performance has not yet been attained. Challenges encountered include the translation methodology employed and the architectural limitations of the chosen model, which is primarily optimized for English texts. However, ongoing efforts are underway to address these challenges and enhance the model's performance. Our study represents a step towards improving automated symptom extraction in Slovenian clinical texts, with ongoing work focused on mitigating identified issues to achieve better outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

Modern technologies like computer vision (CV), Artificial Intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), and (AIoT) Artificial Intelligence of Things have advanced in many fields, particularly surveillance systems, which need to process faces in real time to guarantee security. This paper proposed a comparative analysis for a real time face recognition system from video sequences with two architectures including traditional application using a personal computer and a Raspberry Pi, respectively. Our study offers an implementation for a real-time face recognition system employing Viola-Jones algorithm and Deep neural networks techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for face detection and face recognition. Our face recognition system seeks to replace the conventional approach of keeping track of attendance by implementing a Raspberry Pi-based attendance monitoring system that can be utilized by all institutions and organizations. Significant progress has been made thanks to the use of CNN models which has allowed an accuracy rate of 94%. © 2024 IEEE.

Scalable weighted-cumulated methodology for fatigue estimation

Purpose: The objective measurement of muscle fatigue through the analysis of surface electromyographic signals (S-EMG) has been the object of study in recent decades. The use of S-EMG is interesting because it allows accessing the muscular structure and function through the use of a noninvasive technique. This is a subject of interest to many areas of science such as clinical and orthopedic medicine, biomechanics, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, telemedicine, control of interfaces, intelligent prosthetics, and exoskeletons control and for expert systems to support medical diagnosis to neuromuscular diseases. Changes in the spectral signature of the S-EMG signal such as spectral shift for low frequencies and the increase in the dynamic range of the signal indicate the installation of the biological phenomenon of fatigue. For instance, classical techniques such as zero-crossing, median frequency (MDF), and mean power frequency (MPF) are able to perceive the spectral shift in S-EMG signals. On the other hand, techniques such as root mean square (RMS) values can only perceive the variation in the dynamic range of the S-EMG signal. Methods: In this work, new mathematical models for the objective assessment of muscle fatigue are presented. We sought to design models for objective fatigue estimators that simultaneously perceive the spectral shift for low frequencies and the increase in the dynamic range in the S-EMG signal during the instauration of the fatigue process. The new approach is integrated to the weighted-cumulated methodology framework previously proposed. Three new objective muscle fatigue estimators were conceived: the scalable weighted-cumulated Fourier estimator, the weighted-cumulated wavelet estimator (SWCW), and the weighted-cumulated p-side lobe attenuation algorithm (p-SL). The sparse adversarial attack has attracted increasing attention due to the merit of a low attack cost via changing a small number of pixels. However, the generated adversarial examples are easily detected in vision since the perturbation to each pixel is relatively large. To achieve imperceptible and sparse adversarial attacks, this article formulates a bi-objective constrained optimization problem, simultaneously minimizing the 0 and 2 distances to the original image, and proposes a dual-population-based constrained evolutionary algorithm to solve it. The proposed method solves the optimization problem by evolving two populations, where one population is responsible for finding feasible solutions (i.e., successful attacks) and the other one is to minimize both the 0 and 2 distances. Moreover, a population initialization strategy and two genetic operators are customized to accelerate the convergence speed. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can achieve high success rates with low attack costs, and strikes a better balance between the 0 and 2 distances than state-of-the-art methods. © 2020 IEEE.

Being one essential part of the solutions we are developing to provide accessibility for blind persons, synthesized speech of mathematical content, although having evolved in naturalness in recent years, still keeps a characteristic of generating very long outputs, which makes it difficult for a person who uses a screen reader to memorize. Eye-gaze tracking has been useful for studying cognitive processes and student's effort in performing tasks therefore it seems attractive as a means to understand how people analyze, process, and break down extensive math expressions into smaller ones. This understanding can help to build a similar model of auditory rendering of MathML capable of avoiding cognitive overload. Therefore, we carried out an experiment to do a gaze-based analysis of reading and memorizing mathematical expressions. Our sample consisted of fourteen participants, and seven mathematical expressions were used in the experiment. The results showed that the computed complexity of the expressions and the average duration of eye-gaze fixations have a strong and significant relationship. Therefore, we conclude that the complexity variable must always be considered in the speech synthesis process of mathematical expressions. However, when considering why participants requested the repetition of an expression with not larger complexity during the memorization process, a tentative interpretation based on the number of MathML tree nodes and the computed complexity of the expressions was not enough to explain it, indicating that other factors need to be investigated. Although some answers to the research questions were not yet conclusive, we consider this research relevant because it points to directions for the work in order to minimize the cognitive processing and mental load of the synthesized speech rendering of mathematical expressions. © 2022 IEEE.

This study explores the integration of HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) into a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) utilizing a Pepper robot to enhance doctor visits in a hospital setting. We evaluate a real-world implementation where the Pepper robot acts as an interface for data collection from patients, clinical monitors, and hospital information systems. The CDSS leverages FHIR to seamlessly integrate this data and present it visually, aiming to improve clinical decision-making processes for doctors. Our research investigates the potential of this FHIR-based CDSS with a robot interface to optimize healthcare delivery and potentially improve patient outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

Background: Capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) is a promising component of mechanical-electrical-acoustical conversion, which shows valuable applications in non-distructive testing and obstacle detection fields. In order to study the influence of dimension parameters on the directivity of CMUTs, the three-dimensional multi-physics coupling model is proposed for CMUTs in this paper. Methods: The model combines multiple physical fields through finite element method (FEM), which is more efficient and accurate. The influence of dimension parameters on the transducer is studied from two aspects: the pitch between adjacent cells and cell number, respectively. Results: When increasing the pitch, the directivity becomes better if the pitch is less than half of the wavelength, the grating lobe and side lobe are aroused. However, the bandwidth at-3dB is reduced by up to 71.1% at the same time. When increasing the cell number, the better the direcitvity, while the change of the cell number has little effect on the bandwidth of the array. However, 5.4% frequency shift was caused due to the effective mass change of the transducer. Conclusion: In this study, a 3D model based on FEM is proposed for the influence of dimension parameter on CMUTs. The simulation results indicate that the directivity can be enhanced by chang-ing the dimension. At the same time, it also introduces other performance issues, such as bandwidth decrease and frequency shift through this approach. Therefore, the simulation proposed the guidance of CMUTs performance optimization and patented technology application work in the future. © 2024, Bentham science Publishers. All rights reserved.

Resource-efficient neural networks for embedded systems

While machine learning is traditionally a resource intensive task, embedded systems, autonomous navigation, and the vision of the Internet of Things fuel the interest in resource-efficient approaches. These approaches aim for a carefully chosen trade-off between performance and resource consumption in terms of computation and energy. The development of such approaches is among the major challenges in current machine learning research and key to ensure a smooth transition of machine learning technology from a scientific environment with virtually unlimited computing resources into everyday's applications. In this article, we provide an overview of the current state of the art of machine learning techniques facilitating these real-world requirements. In particular, we focus on resource-efficient inference based on deep neural networks (DNNs), the predominant machine learning models of the past decade. We give a comprehensive overview of the vast literature that can be mainly split into three non-mutually exclusive categories: (i) quantized neural networks, (ii) network pruning, and (iii) structural efficiency. These techniques can be applied during training or as post-processing, and they are widely used to reduce the computational demands in terms of memory footprint, inference speed, and energy efficiency. We also briey discuss different concepts of embedded hardware for DNNs and their compatibility with machine learning techniques as well as potential for energy and latency reduction. We substantiate our discussion with experiments on well-known benchmark data sets using compression techniques (quantization, pruning) for a set of resource-constrained embedded systems, such as CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs. The obtained results highlight the difficulty of finding good trade-offs between resource efficiency and prediction quality.
