Complex Dynamical Behavior of a Two-Stage Colpitts Oscillator with Magnetically Coupled Inductors

A five-dimensional (5D) controlled two-stage Colpitts oscillator is introduced and analyzed. This new electronic oscillator is constructed by considering the well-known two-stage Colpitts oscillator with two further elements (coupled inductors and variable resistor). In contrast to current approaches based on piecewise linear (PWL) model, we propose a smooth mathematical model (with exponential nonlinearity) to investigate the dynamics of the oscillator. Several issues, such as the basic dynamical behaviour, bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, and frequency spectra of the oscillator, are investigated theoretically and numerically by varying a single control resistor. It is found that the oscillator moves from the state of fixed point motion to chaos via the usual paths of period-doubling and interior crisis routes as the single control resistor is monitored. Furthermore, an experimental study of controlled Colpitts oscillator is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit is proposed for the investigations of the complex dynamics behaviour of the system. A very good qualitative agreement is obtained between the theoretical/numerical and experimental results.

Several studies for palmprint-based person identification have focused on the use of palmprint images captured in the visible part of the spectrum. However, to a possible improvement of the existing palmprint systems, the proposed work concerned with the use of infrared palmprint images for the palmprint identification system. For that, a comparison of infrared palmprint images versus gray level and color image is given. At the features-extraction stage the features are generated by the method of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This feature-extraction technique has been widely used for pattern recognition, as well as in the field of biometrics. The proposed scheme is tested and evaluated using PolyU multispectral palmprint database of 400 users. Our experimental results show that the infrared spectrum achieves the best result. Also, color image present three spectrums, for that, we propose a score level and image level fusion schemes to integrate these colors information.

The most important advantages of RFID technology are transmitting and receiving of information wirelessly as well as low implementation and maintenance costs. Such attractive features are reason for widespread usage of RFID systems - from tracking of assets to measurement of the timing during sporting events. To ensure secure operation of such systems they should have appropriate protection against reverse engineering. The contribution of this paper is a method for reverse engineering of specific RFID system used for time measurements during sporting events. Selected communication protocol aspects are discussed and their replication with off-the-shelf hardware and software with the aim to simulate a non-existing RFID tag with certain self selected ID number are presented. © 2012 IEEE.

Several studies for palmprint-based personal identification have focused on improving the performance of palmprint images captured under visible light. However, during the past few years, some researchers have considered multispectral images to improve the effect of these systems. Compared with color images, multispectral images provide additional information due to its variety of spectral bands. In this paper, we propose an efficient online personal identification system based on MultiSpectral Palmprint (MSP) using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) and two-dimensional Block based Discrete Cosine Transform (2D-BDCT). In this study, a segmented MSP is firstly divided into non-overlapping and equal-sized blocks, and then, applies the 2D-BDCT over each block. By using zigzag scan order (starting at the top-left) each transform block is reordered to produce the feature vector. Subsequently, RBF method is used for modeling and so for classifying the feature vectors. The proposed method is validated for their efficacy on the available PolyU MSP Database of 300 users. Our experimental results show the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed approach, which brings both high identification and accuracy rate.

This article develops a speaker-dependent Arabic phonemes recognition system using MFCC analysis and the VQ-LBG algorithm. The system is examined with and without vector quantization in order to analyze the effect of compression in an acoustic parameterization phase. Our experimental results show that vector quantization using a codebook of size 16 achieves good results compared to the system without quantization for a majority of the phonemes studied.

Biometric system has been actively emerging in various industries for the past few years, and it is continuing to roll to provide higher security features for access control system. In the recent years, hand based biometrics is extensively used for personal recognition. In this paper a new biometric system based on texture of the hand knuckles, namely Finger-Knuckle-Print (FKP), is proposed. To extract the image local texture information and represent the FKPs features, the 2D Block based Discrete Cosine Transform (2D-BDCT), is employed. Finally, performance of all finger types is determined individually and a min rule fusion is applied to develop a multimodal system. Experimental results show that 2D-DCT-mod2 yields the best performance for identifying FKPs and it is able to provide an excellent recognition rate and provide more security. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with an application of ICA for a possible improvement of iris recognition by replying to the question: does ICA perform well for such purpose? To achieve this, the hypotheses and the theoretical concepts of ICA methods used are handled so that coherence with iris authentication application is guaranteed. Our contribution is not in the development of new theoretical concepts of ICA but it is in adapting its basic ideas for our application. Also, it consists of deploying its powerful and its efficiency for iris recognition, and consequently;it's potential to embed it on smart cards for increasing application domains of secure biometric-based individual identification systems. We have developed a comparative study between the implemented ICA algorithms and other recent and popular methods of iris recognition. We have demonstrated our experimental results using some mathematical criteria. Three different subsets of international certified CASIA iris image databases are used for testing the different implemented methods. The conclusion of such comparative study is that the ICA-based approaches are more effective and more practical than other existing methods. © 2012 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.
