In this paper, we make use of a blind adaptive linear predictor for channel shortening in single input multiple output (SIMO) channels. We compare our approach to the so-called MERRY blind channel shortener. We assess through simulations that our proposed approach provides faster convergence rate and it better exploits the spatio-temporal diversity present in the SIMO channels.

This paper presents the BNSI Slovenian Broadcast News database project. The result of the project is a database with speech and text corpus oriented toward large vocabulary continuous speech recognition in general domain. The speech corpus consists of 36 hours of transcribed evening and late night news. The raw database material was captured in the archive of national broadcaster RTV Slovenia that was a partner in the project. General Broadcast News transcription conventions were supplemented with language specific rules. The Transcriber tool was used to produce the transcriptions. All additional tools needed during the annotation process were also installed on a computer. Statistics of speech corpus is presented in the paper. The BNSI text corpus is generated from broadcasts' scenarios for a period of 7 years. 600 monthly shows' collections of text are included. They will be used to improve the language modeling in highly inflectional Slovenian language. The BNSI Slovenian Broadcast News database will be available through ELRA/ELDA.

While most of existing adaptive modulation techniques for MIMO-OFDM systems focus on either maximizing data rate or minimizing transmit power, our work aims at minimizing average bit error rate (BER) under transmit power constraint with fixed throughput. In this paper, a novel adaptive modulation algorithm for minimizing BER is proposed by introducing additional constraints. Performance of proposed algorithm in wireless local area network (WLAN) environment is evaluated by computer simulation. Frequency selective fading channel model is simulated. Numerical results show that our proposed algorithm with low complexity yields better performance than existing suboptimal scheme under certain conditions

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in combination with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission are potential candidates for next generation wireless local area networks (WLAN). In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for bit allocation, called upward bit allocation algorithm (UBAA), to minimize transmit power while maintaining bit error rate (BER) in MIMO-OFDM systems with fixed throughput. Since the optimal discrete bit allocation is of high complexity, UBAA with efficient logarithmic search is proposed as a sub-optimal approach. Performance of UBAA is evaluated by computer simulation and compared to that of optimal algorithm and existing sub-optimal schemes.

This tutorial paper reviews the theory and design of codes for hiding or embedding information in signals such as images, video, audio, graphics, and text. Such codes have also been called watermarking codes;they can be used in a variety of applications, including copyright protection for digital media, content authentication, media forensics, data binding, and covert communications. Some of these applications imply the presence of an adversary attempting to disrupt the transmission of information to the receiver;other applications involve a noisy, generally unknown, communication channel. Our focus is on the mathematical models, fundamental principles, and code design techniques that are applicable to data hiding. The approach draws from basic concepts in information theory, coding theory, game theory, and signal processing, and is illustrated with applications to the problem of hiding data in images. © 2005 IEEE.

In this article the development of the prototype of complex hierarchical organized sensor/control system that enables the capture and transmission of high quality images through mobile networks is described. Compression methods (codecs) for image information contents are used for effective image transfer through bandwidth limited communication channel. JPEG method is one of the implemented methods. It is the most known standard method on the field of lossy methods, but it gives poor results at high compression rations. The best compression methods are based on Wavelet transformation. In our implementation lifting scheme for a 9/7-filter bank was used to compute wavelet transform and the novel coding process and ordering of bit plane bits is presented which is comparable with a JPEG2000 codec in rate-distortion sense and has lower computational complexity as JPEG2000. A trade-off between a complexity and efficiency has been made to meet the cannel capacity of the GSM/GPPS network. Coder prototype is realized in compact DSP video module with relatively low cornputational power. Usability of the described methods is demonstrated on Internet based application 'Information system for image data collecting and distribution.

Conversion between different adaptive hypermedia systems has barely been proposed, yet alone tested in realistic settings. This paper presents the evaluation of the interoperability of two adaptive (educational) hypermedia systems, MOT and WHURLE. The evaluation is performed with the help of a class of thirty-one students enrolled in the fourth year of the "Politehnica" University of Bucharest, who were taking a one-week intensive course on Adaptive Hypermedia. This paper describes and interprets our first experiments of the "write once, deliver many" paradigm of adaptive hypermedia creation. Copyright 2005 ACM.

The impulse noise in the HV power line channel is mainly caused by high voltage existing on conductors and station apparatus. Such impulse noise has repetition rate of 50 or 150 Hz and is synchronous to power frequency period. In this paper, we have shown that the digital transmission via HV PLC channel have better performance if it is realized through the transmission of interleaved data blocks. The data frame duration must be adjusted to the periodicity of impulse noise or the power frequency period. © 2004 IEEE.

Two modified schemes of the recursive least squares (RLS) channel estimation algorithm are proposed. The proposed techniques employ a method for adjusting the adaptive weight (forgetting factor) of the RLS algorithm to exploit the time correlation of the channel response to improve the estimation accuracy and tracking capability. To verify the effectiveness of the algorithms, the proposed techniques are used for estimating the forward link channel response of MC-CDMA systems. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms outperform the customary RLS algorithm channel estimation scheme over the frequency selective fading channel.
