The study of citation networks is of interest to the scientific community. However, the underlying mechanism driving individual citation behavior remains imperfectly understood, despite the recent proliferation of quantitative research methods. Traditional network models normally use graph theory to consider articles as nodes and citations as pairwise relationships between them. In this paper, we propose an alternative evolutionary model based on hypergraph theory in which one hyperedge can have an arbitrary number of nodes, combined with an aging effect to reflect the temporal dynamics of scientific citation behavior. Both theoretical approximate solution and simulation analysis of the model are developed and validated using two benchmark datasets from different disciplines, i.e. publications of the American Physical Society (APS) and the digital Bibliography & Library Project (DBLP). Further analysis indicates that the attraction of early publications will decay exponentially. Moreover, the experimental results show that the aging effect indeed has a significant influence on the description of collective citation patterns. Shedding light on the complex dynamics driving these mechanisms facilitates the understanding of the laws governing scientific evolution and the quantitative evaluation of scientific outputs. © 2021, CC BY.

Standard RGB-D trackers treat the target as a 2D structure, which makes modelling appearance changes related-even to out-of-plane rotation challenging. This limitation is addressed by the proposed long-term RGB-D tracker called OTR - Object Tracking by Reconstruction. OTR performs online 3D target reconstruction to facilitate robust learning of a set of view-specific discriminative correlation filters (DCFs). The 3D reconstruction supports two performance-enhancing features: (i) generation of an accurate spatial support for constrained DCF learning from its 2D projection and (ii) point-cloud based estimation of 3D pose change for selection and storage of view-specific DCFs which robustly localize the target after out-of-view rotation or heavy occlusion. Extensive evaluation on the Princeton RGB-D tracking and STC Benchmarks shows OTR outperforms the state-of-the-art by a large margin.

This paper reports a new kind of mathematical model for language competition dynamics using compartmental epidemiological modeling approach. The model describes the competition between two languages, say the predominant one called language 1, and the less spoken language 2, both in the same community. We distinguish three groups of population building the concerned community: one majority speaking language 1, one minority speaking language 2 and a last minority speaking neither language 1 nor language 2. The study of the proposed model includes an analysis of the evolution of the number of speakers over time. This model predicts that language 2 can inevitably disappear if the threshold parameter R is less than one. We show that our model is well-posed mathematically and linguistically. We also show that the model has basically two linguistic equilibrium points. A monolingual equilibrium point that corresponds to the case where only one language is spoken: some individuals speak only the language 1 and some others do speak neither language 1, nor language 2. A bilingual equilibrium point which corresponds to the case where all the languages are spoken: some individuals speak both languages 1 and 2, some others speak only language 1, while a third group does speak only language 2, and the last group speaks none of the two languages. In this bilingual equilibrium point, both languages coexist. Depending on the threshold parameter, we demonstrate the stability of these equilibria. The model presents on one hand, a direct bifurcation phenomenon, in which we have a stable equilibrium point without bilingual speakers when the associated basic reproduction number is less than one. On the other hand, it presents a stable bilingual equilibrium point when the number of associated basic reproductions is greater than one. CDTB: A color and depth visual object tracking dataset and benchmark

We propose a new color-and-depth general visual object tracking benchmark (CDTB). CDTB is recorded by several passive and active RGB-D setups and contains indoor as well as outdoor sequences acquired in direct sunlight. The CDTB dataset is the largest and most diverse dataset for RGB-D tracking, with an order of magnitude larger number of frames than related datasets. The sequences have been carefully recorded to contain significant object pose change, clutter, occlusion, and periods of long-term target absence to enable tracker evaluation under realistic conditions. Sequences are per-frame annotated with 13 visual attributes for detailed analysis. Experiments with RGB and RGB-D trackers show that CDTB is more challenging than previous datasets. State-of-the-art RGB trackers outperform the recent RGB-D trackers, indicating a large gap between the two fields, which has not been detected by the prior benchmarks. Coxibs are a group of drugs with selective inhibition against cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes with increased interest from scientific community due to their side effects and potential other pharmacological mechanisms. The aim of this work is to utilize the chemical characteristics of coxibs in order to identify compounds with similar chemical structure. The approach is based on the assessment of the Simplified Molecular-Input Line-Entry System (SMILES) as adequate molecular structure representations for the identification of drug similarities. The similarity measurements are based on molecular fingerprints that were extracted from coxibs and the Maximum Consecutive Subsequence (MCS) algorithm. An ensemble of methods based on majority voting, weighting and equal weighting on the algorithms was further applied. Majority voting returned 200 similar compounds whereas weighting and equal weighting returned 53 and 27 compounds respectively. Interestingly, despite the independence of the methods, all three identified 20 common compounds. The identification of drugs with potential chemical similarity with coxibs, as revealed from similarity measurements of fingerprints and MCS scores could provide new insights for potential biological targets for coxibs or drugs that could interact with COX-2 or other biological targets of coxibs.

Antenna arrays have a long history of more than 100 years and have evolved closely with the development of electronic and information technologies, playing an indispensable role in wireless communications and radar. With the rapid development of electronic and information technologies, the demand for all-time, all-domain, and full-space network services has exploded, and new communication requirements have been put forward on various space/air/ground platforms. To meet the ever increasing requirements of the future sixth generation (6G) wireless communications, such as high capacity, wide coverage, low latency, and strong robustness, it is promising to employ different types of antenna arrays (e.g., phased arrays, digital arrays, and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, etc.) with various beamforming technologies (e.g., analog beamforming, digital beamforming, hybrid beamforming, and passive beamforming, etc.) in space/air/ground communication networks, bringing in advantages such as considerable antenna gains, multiplexing gains, and diversity gains. However, enabling antenna array for space/air/ground communication networks poses specific, distinctive and tricky challenges, which has aroused extensive research attention. This paper aims to overview the field of antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking. The technical potentials and challenges of antenna array enabled space/air/ground communications and networking are presented first. Subsequently, the antenna array structures and designs are discussed. We then discuss various emerging technologies facilitated by antenna arrays to meet the new communication requirements of space/air/ground communication systems. Enabled by these emerging technologies, the distinct characteristics, challenges, and solutions for space communications, airborne communications, and ground communications are reviewed. Nowadays, Web services compositions are playing a major role in the implementation of different types of distributed architectures. Such applications usually provide services to hundreds of users simultaneously. Load Testing is considered as an important type of testing for Web services compositions, as such applications require concurrent access by many users simultaneously. In this context, load testing for these types of applications seems an important task in order to discover problems under high loads. For this goal, we propose a model-based resource aware test architecture aiming to study the behavior of WS-BPEL compositions taking into account load conditions. The main contribution of this work consists of (a) adopting the timed automata formalism to model the system under test and to generate digital-clock test suites (b) identifying the best node for hosting each tester instance, then (c) running load tests and recording performance data and finally (d) analyzing the obtained logs in order to detect problems under load. Our approach is illustrated by means of a case study from the healthcare domain. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper extends frequency domain quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) methods pursuing higher sensitivity to detect Brain Developmental Disorders. Prior qEEG work lacked integration of cross-spectral information omitting important functional connectivity descriptors. Lack of geographical diversity precluded accounting for site-specific variance, increasing qEEG nuisance variance. We ameliorate these weaknesses. (i) Create lifespan Riemannian multinational qEEG norms for cross-spectral tensors. These norms result from the HarMNqEEG project fostered by the Global Brain Consortium. We calculate the norms with data from 9 countries, 12 devices, and 14 studies, including 1564 subjects. Instead of raw data, only anonymized metadata and EEG cross spectral tensors were shared. After visual and automatic quality control, developmental equations for the mean and standard deviation of qEEG traditional and Riemannian DPs were calculated using additive mixed-effects models. We demonstrate qEEG "batch effects " and provide methods to calculate harmonized z-scores. (ii) We also show that harmonized Riemannian norms produce z-scores with increased diagnostic accuracy predicting brain dysfunction produced by malnutrition in the first year of life and detecting COVID induced brain dysfunction. (iii) We offer open code and data to calculate different individual z-scores from the HarMNqEEG dataset. These results contribute to developing bias-free, low-cost neuroimaging technologies applicable in various health settings.

Pneumonia is one of the foremost lung diseases and untreated pneumonia will lead to serious threats for all age groups. The proposed work aims to extract and evaluate the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused pneumonia infection in lung using CT scans. We propose an image-assisted system to extract COVID-19 infected sections from lung CT scans (coronal view). It includes following steps: (i) Threshold filter to extract the lung region by eliminating possible artifacts;(ii) Image enhancement using Harmony-Search-Optimization and Otsu thresholding;(iii) Image segmentation to extract infected region(s);and (iv) Region-of-interest (ROI) extraction (features) from binary image to compute level of severity. The features that are extracted from ROI are then employed to identify the pixel ratio between the lung and infection sections to identify infection level of severity. The primary objective of the tool is to assist the pulmonologist not only to detect but also to help plan treatment process. Automatically verifying the identity of a person by means of biometrics (e.g., face and fingerprint) is an important application in our day-to-day activities such as accessing banking services and security control in airports. To increase the system reliability, several biometric devices are often used. Such a combined system is known as a multimodal biometric system. This paper reports a benchmarking study carried out within the framework of the BioSecure DS2 (Access Control) evaluation campaign organized by the University of Surrey, involving face, fingerprint, and iris biometrics for person authentication, targeting the application of physical access control in a medium-size establishment with some 500 persons. While multimodal biometrics is a well-investigated subject in the literature, there exists no benchmark for a fusion algorithm comparison. Working towards this goal, we designed two sets of experiments: quality-dependent and cost-sensitive evaluation. The quality-dependent evaluation aims at assessing how well fusion algorithms can perform under changing quality of raw biometric images principally due to change of devices. The cost-sensitive evaluation, on the other hand, investigates how well a fusion algorithm can perform given restricted computation and in the presence of software and hardware failures, resulting in errors such as failure-to-acquire and failure-to-match. Since multiple capturing devices are available, a fusion algorithm should be able to handle this nonideal but nevertheless realistic scenario. In both evaluations, each fusion algorithm is provided with scores from each biometric comparison subsystem as well as the quality measures of both the template and the query data. The response to the call of the evaluation campaign proved very encouraging, with the submission of 22 fusion systems.
