In distributed multimedia storage systems where client requests for different multimedia objects may have different demands, placement and replication of the objects is an important factor, as it may result in an imbalance in server loading across the system. Replica management and load balancing is all the more a crucial issue for large-scale multimedia systems. We design and analyze a heuristic static strategy to determine the placement, number of replicas of the objects, and balance the client requests among the servers, to minimize the average waiting time (AWT) of the requests. Our strategy exploits clever virtual routing technique to strike a balance among the servers for load balancing. We validate the performance via rigorous simulations with respect to several influencing factors and compare with a system that uses hashing function only for load balancing. © 2006 IEEE.

The CSFS (cryptographic storage file system) is a network file storage system that is suitable for a small-to-medium sized networks such as a campus network. In a CSFS, a lot of distributed file servers are organized in a star-liked architecture. File names are stored in a name server and file data are stored in distributed file servers. A CSFS has good scalability and is able to accommodate hundreds of file servers. We implemented a CSFS in pure Java and tested the system with a benchmark. The test results show that CSFS delivers acceptable performance for general file operations. Its performance of file upload and download is as efficient as FTP. It can support more than 450 concurrent online users. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Reliable internet access is a key enabler for economic growth. Although the Philippine government launched initiatives to improve connectivity, connection speeds remained below the global average, especially for mobile networks. This paper presents Hotspotter, a system that aims to aid implementers and stakeholders in quantifying and addressing network coverage issues. Hotspotter is an incentivized crowdsensing system that collects, maps, and visualizes WiFi and cellular data to pinpoint hotspots and dead zones for the effective deployment and relocation of WiFi access points. A mobile application for Android was developed to facilitate data collection on geolocation, nearby WiFi access points, and connected cellular networks. The user interface visualizes the aggregated data in a hexagon-grid map. Fieldwork was conducted in two sitios of Barangay San Lorenzo, Norzagaray, Bulacan to stress-test the Hotspotter system in a Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA). It was found that 2G and 4G had the widest coverage and strongest signals overall, with modal signal strengths of 4.0 and 3.0, respectively. Being at the cutting edge, 5G was not yet supported. In the end, the mobile application's passive sensing, collecting, and caching of data successfully operated even in the most isolated areas without an internet connection. © 2024 IEEE.

In disaster situations communication and power infrastructure could be damaged, disrupting their associated services. This could delay relief efforts and cost more lives. In situations where connections are damaged and unreliable, peer-to-peer (P2P) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN) technologies can help provide alternative communication modes particularly in support of rescue and relief operations. Combining the benefits of the store-and-forward capability of DTN and the data propagation techniques of Wi-Fi Direct, we have created a flexible framework called ARC which allows users to create applications that could meet their specific requirements, particularly those in support of emergency communications. To demonstrate our framework, we created a simple application using ARC, and used this application to evaluate its DTN and Wi-Fi Direct group recovery capabilities. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper details the experiments carried out at TREC 2006 Terabyte Track using Indri Search Engine. There were three tasks in the Terabyte track of TREC 2006, i.e. efficiency task, ad hoc task and named page finding task. We participated in two tasks, and submitted 5 runs for ad hoc task and 3 runs for named page task respectively. In ad hoc task, we looked at the importance of term proximity. In named page finding task, we cared more about the information of document structure and document prior.

Because of their development and success, MANETs are now preferred alternatives in many fields of study and application. The IEEE 802.11 standard is the basis of most wireless technologies. To treat collisions in wireless networks, IEEE 802.11 distributed Coordination Function (DCF) MAC layer employs Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm, that is helpful in decreasing the potential of collision, but comes at the expense of several network performance metrics, such as medium access delay, bandwidth management, power use, and fairness. A Deep Learning technique called Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) allows an agent to communicate with the environment in order to accomplish a goal. In the present paper, we suggest Q-learning (QL), one of the DRL approaches to improve the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) in MANETs. The intelligently designed Int-BEB aims for better CW selection;this selection strikes to reduce collisions as much as possible and to give more chances to nodes that make collisions to access the channel by taking into consideration their residual energy. In-depth simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanism. The performance of Int-BEB is evaluated in diverse networks with several criteria such as packet successful transmission, packet loss and energy. © 2023 IEEE.

Group Communication System (GCS) is an important building block for reliable, fault-tolerant distributed applications. Due to highly variable and unpredictable latency in WANs, GCS needs to cope with frequent membership, changes. It results in diminishing the scalability of GCS. In this paper we propose a new scheme that improves the scalability of group membership service for WANs by exploring dedicated membership sewers configured into multiple layers and reaching global agreement on the view through layered servers. It improves the scalability of a process group of N member processes front O(N-2) to O(N-3) with three layers, where N is the number of processes in the group. computer simulation verifies that the proposed scheme requires much smaller number of message exchanges for reaching an agreement on a next view and does that much quicker. In addition, the proposed scheme pl events applications from being blocked until reaching the final view agreement if the applications permit temporary inconsistency.

High quality video streaming for mobile users is difficult to achieve in some areas of the world due to poor broadband capacity and sparse network coverage. We propose a bandwidth-sharing scheme to allow users with limited uplink bandwidth to borrow idle bandwidth from nearby access points and provide these users the opportunity to experience higher quality video than what their own bandwidth could normally support. We developed a Linux kernel implementation of a multipath less-than-best-effort (MP-LBE) protocol for bandwidth scavenging and demonstrated, through testbed experiments, that video quality may be improved through bandwidth sharing. This may bring us closer to the 'video everywhere' vision even as incremental upgrades are made on broadband Internet infrastructure. © 2015 IEEE.

Speeding up fractal image compression by genetic algorithms

The main problem with all fractal compression implementation is execution time. Algorithms can spend hours to compress a single image. Most of the major variants of the standard algorithm for speeding up computation time have led to a bad-quality or a lower compression ratio. For example, the Fisher's [ 7] proposed classification pattern greatly accelerated the algorithm, but image quality was poor due to the search-space reduction imposed by the classification, which eleminates a lot of good solutions. By using genetic algorithms to address the problem, we optimize the domain blocks search. We explore all domain blocks present in the image but not in exhaustive way ( like a standard algorithm) and without omitting any possible block (solution) as a classification pattern does. A genetic algorithm is the unique method for satisfying these constraints. And it is a way to do be a random search because the genetic one is directed by fitness selection, which produces optimal solutions. Our goal in this work is to use a genetic algorithm to solve the IFS inverse problem and to build a fractal compression algorithm based on the genetic optimization of a domain blocks search. we have also implemented standard Barnsley algorithm, the Y. Fisher based on classification, and the genetic compression algorithm with quadtree partitioning. A population of transformations was evolved for each range block, and the result is compared with the standard Barnsely algorithm and the Fisher algorithm = based classification. We deduced an optimal set of values for the best parameters combination, and we can also specify the best combination for each desired criteria: best compression ratio, best image quality, or quick compression process. By running many test images, we experimentally found the following set of optimal values of all the algorithm parameters that ensure compromise between execution time and solutions optimality: Population size = 100, Maximum generations = 20, Crossover rat

This paper presents a novel algorithm named Double-layer Multi-expression Programming (DMEP). Then DMEP model is applied to the prediction of 28-day Portland cement compressive strength. We compare DMEP model with other four soft computing models, namely Multi-Expression Programming model (MEP), Gene Expression Programming model (GEP), Neural networks model (NN) and Fuzzy logic model (FL) on 28-day cement strength prediction. The experiment results show that DMEP model has a lower rate in RMSE and MAE, and the prediction average percentage error of the cement strength data using DMEP model is reduced to 2.18%, which is lower than other four models. The results obtained from the computational tests demonstrate that DMEP is a promising technique for the prediction of cement strength. © 2012 IEEE.
