In the recent years, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become increasing interests for different civilian applications. The high-resolution video image, on one hand, brings us clarity and details of the behavior and characteristics of the earth surface features, on the other hand, presents new challenges in data processing. For example, how do we generate ortho-image from high-resolution UAV video images because the video data contain large redundant information due to a high sampling rate and the UAV has inherent characteristics of inconsistent and unstable flight parameters such as flying velocity, attitudes and altitude. This paper presents our theoretical analysis and experimental results for optimizing the re-sampling rate in order to speed up the generation of the video ortho-image. This algorithm is based on analysis of UAV exterior orientation parameters (EOPs) in each imaging epoch and video lens distortion characteristics as well as mapping accuracy of different scale. The model has been established for these relationships based on a test field located in Picayune, Mississippi. Our experimental results indicate that the resample rate is directly correlated with EOPs including three position elements and rotation elements of exterior orientation parameters, flying velocity and requirement of accuracy for different mapping scale.

The climatic effect of urbanization has been an important concern in remote sensing community. Previous research in this field paid little attention to the intra-urban variation of surface temperature and its relation with natural and social variables via region by region within a city. Examining the difference in the quantitative interrelationships between urban surface temperature and these variables in different regions can help identify which factors significantly contribute to urban surface temperature, which helps us to effectively mitigate urban heat islands and thus improve the city environment. This paper addresses these issues. The study area is located in Washington DC, USA. Main data sources are from (1) EOS Terra ASTER, including surface reflectance VNIR (15m) and surface temperature TIR (90m);(2) U. S. 2000 census data of Washington DC;and (3) high spatial resolution (1m) color infrared DOQQ. The census tracts were used to partition the city into 188 different regions. Four variables were extracted in the study: (1) urban surface temperature, (2) population density, (3) NDVI, and (4) land use/cover, which is expressed in the percentage of urban surfaces (commerce/industry/transportation). Mean values of each variable were calculated based on the census tracts, and their interrelationships were examined using a correlation matrix. The investigated results indicate that urban surface temperature is mostly correlated with the percentage of urban surfaces coverage (r = 0.857), but negatively correlated with NDVI (r = -0.817), whose correlative coefficient is further subject to the influence of available water bodies (i.e., water bodies has low NDVI but can effectively lower surface temperature). In the design of highway, the cross-section mapping and the computation of earthwork are needed. This paper first presents the design and implementation of a software system for road cross-section mapping and earthwork calculation based on AutoCAD software, and then presents how to automatically determine the boundary of earthwork, automatically map the highway cross-section in AutoCAD, automatically detecting the area of filling and cutting earthwork, and automatically calculate the volume of filling and cutting earthwork. Finally, this paper describes the implementation of this system using AutoLISP based on AutoCAD. The project was performed for the construction of Qinghai-Tibet Railway in China, funded by China Railway Engineering Corporation. The results demonstrated that the designed and implemented system can successfully applied in the mapping of highway cross-section and the calculation of highway earthwork. © 2005 by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

High-quality adjustment computation of GPS data post-processing is very importation for a high-accuracy project. The least squares adjustment is a commonly adopted mathematical model for GPS data post-processing. How to evaluate the adjustment accuracy of GPS data post-processing in the least squares adjustment is a hot topic in GPS community. This paper derives a mathematical model for evaluating the adjustment accuracy of GPS data post-processing. This model describes the errors propagate from a geocentric rectangular space coordinate system to a geodetic coordinate system, and further to a Gaussian or UTM plane rectangular coordinate system. In addition, this paper studies the qualities of the carry-phase observations and the combined observations of carry-phase and pseudo-range, and GPS cycle slips detection based on wavelet transform. A GPS test field is established to verify the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrated that this derived model is theoretically rigorous, but without losing accuracy, compared with the existing methods. © 2005 by the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

This paper presents the comparison study on at-sensor brightness temperatures measured by Terra ASTER and Landsat ETM+. The study area is located along the east coast from the north of North Carolina to the southern Virginia, USA. Experimental data are two adjacent pairs of cloudless and nearly coincident (just about half hour apart) ASTER and ETM+ scenes, both of which were acquired on July 29, 2002. Digital numbers of Landsat ETM+ thermal band data were first converted to the spectral radiance using both high and low gains and then to the temperature in degrees C by using the reversed Planck's function to obtain the at-sensor brightness temperature. ASTER at-sensor brightness temperature and corresponding surface temperature were derived from its standard products AST 04 and 08 respectively and converted as well to degrees C, and then re-projected to the same projection system as that of Landsat ETM+. For matching spectrally, band 13 and 14 of ASTER at-sensor data were averaged before being compared with Landsat ETM+ thermal band, and mean ASTER at-sensor temperature was obtained by averaging all of the five ASTER thermal bands. To facilitate comparison, spatial resampling was also conducted on ASTER data to achieve the same spatial resolution as that of ETM+ band 6. Finally, common areas covered by each pair of scenes were extracted for analysis. Two sampling strategies, random and systematic (i.e., every a number of rows and columns), were employed in the study to obtain the pixels for constructing scatter plots, and dependent on the dimension of the data sets involved, about 8, 000 or 18,000 pixels (~1% of data volume) were used for each plot. Results indicate that minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation of the at-sensor temperatures of these two sensors are very similar for the entire areas commonly covered by each pair of scenes. The at-sensor brightness temperatures measured by Terra ASTER and Landsat ETM+ and the surface temperature of ASTER were compared to one another in the study. The study area is located along the east coast from southern Virginia to the north of North Carolina, USA. data sources consist of two adjacent pairs ASTER and ETM+ scenes, both acquired on the same day. All data were first converted to the physical temperature in degrees C, together with other necessary preprocesses before comparison. Results indicate that minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation of the at-sensor temperatures of these two sensors are very similar. Strong linear correlations (R 2 >0.99) were found between surface temperature and mean at-sensor brightness temperature for ASTER. However, inter-sensor comparison of measured temperatures, though overall still showing high correlation with R 2 values between 0.85 and 0.95, presents regular vertical columns in each scatter plot, and the variation range reached by these columns could be up to 10degC or more, which indicates that for different locations the temperatures measured by ETM+ may be the same but the corresponding temperatures measured by ASTER may vary by up to 10degC or more. This may suggest that there is some poor performance in Landsat-7 band 6 and warrants caution in applications when Landsat ETM+ thermal imagery is involved

The intra-urban variation in surface temperature and its related natural and social variables region by region within a city was investigated in the study. The study area is Washington DC, USA. data sources include one EOS Terra ASTER scene, census data and high spatial resolution (1m) color infrared DOQQ. The census tracts were used to partition the city into different regions. Variables extracted and considered in the study are: (1) urban surface temperature, (2) population density, (3) NDVI, and (4) land use/cover, particularly the percentage of urban surfaces. Mean values of each variable were calculated based on the census tracts, and their interrelationships were examined using a correlation matrix. Results indicate that urban surface temperature is mostly correlated with the percentage of urban surfaces (r = 0.857). Whereas, NDVI shows strong negative correlation with surface temperature (r= - 0.817), and its coefficient is further subject to the influence of available water bodies (i.e., water bodies have low NDVI but can lower surface temperature). Positive relation was found between population density and temperature with a reduced degree of correlation (r = 0.417), but still significant (p-value <= 0.0001 at 95% confidence level)

The aim of the study is to analyze the seasonal development of crop canopies from the perspective of spatial domain of remotely sensed imagery for monitoring agricultural fields. The study site is located in eastern Nebraska, USA. Multidate high resolution aerial imagery using Kodak DCS420IR (including red and NIR bands) was acquired across the growing season over corn and soybean crops in 2000. Image datasets were first coregistered and then normalized using pseudoinvariant features, and NDVI was then computed. spatial structure analyses were carried out using semivariograms. Results indicate that sill+nugget variance for NDVI component bands decreases as the crop develops for both corn and soybeans, suggesting the crop canopies become increasingly even, the range for red band also decreases for both crops but not for NIR band, whose range first increases but then decreases. Differential spatio-temporal patterns were found between corn and soybean NDVI for both sill+nugget variance and range, likely due to the difference in their developmental stage and canopy architecture. These findings suggest that NDVI is sensitive to the development of crop canopies and thus can be applied effectively to capture changing spatial structure of reflectance during the crop development
