ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023 The Authors

Over the past six decades, the computing systems field has experienced significant transformations, profoundly impacting society with transformational developments, such as the Internet and the commodification of computing. Underpinned by technological advancements, computer systems, far from being static, have been continuously evolving and adapting to cover multifaceted societal niches. This has led to new paradigms such as cloud, fog, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which offer fresh economic and creative opportunities. Nevertheless, this rapid change poses complex research challenges, especially in maximizing potential and enhancing functionality. As such, to maintain an economical level of performance that meets ever-tighter requirements, one must understand the drivers of new model emergence and expansion, and how contemporary challenges differ from past ones. To that end, this article investigates and assesses the factors influencing the evolution of computing systems, covering established systems and architectures as well as newer developments, such as serverless computing, quantum computing, and on-device AI on edge devices. Trends emerge when one traces technological trajectory, which includes the rapid obsolescence of frameworks due to business and technical constraints, a move towards specialized systems and models, and varying approaches to centralized and decentralized control. This comprehensive review of modern computing systems looks ahead to the future of research in the field, highlighting key challenges and emerging trends, and underscoring their importance in cost-effectively driving technological progress. © 2024, CC BY.

This research seeks to improve our knowledge of ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifying potential concerns and challenges. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The project MoSGrid (Molecular Simulation Grid) has been developing a web-based science gateway supporting the community with various services for quantum chemistry, molecular modeling, and docking. Users gain access to distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs) via intuitive user interfaces for sophisticated tools, specialized workflows, and distributed repositories. Currently, the MoSGrid community consists of about 120 users from a number of fields related to chemistry and bioinformatics located in Germany. However, the underlying security infrastructure is generally applicable and can be deployed in arbitrary projects. In this paper we present algorithms for model checking CTL over systems specified as Petri nets. We present sequential as well as distributed model checking algorithms. The algorithms rely on an explicit representation of the system state space, but do not require the transition relation to be explicitly available;it is recomputed whenever required. This approach allows us to model check very large systems, with hundreds of millions of states, in a fast and efficient way. In this paper we present algorithms for model checking CTL over systems specified as Petri nets. We present sequential as well as distributed model checking algorithms. The algorithms rely on an explicit representation of the system state space, but do not require the transition relation to be explicitly available; it is recomputed whenever required. This approach allows us to model check very large systems, with hundreds of millions of states, in a fast and efficient way. Furthermore, our distributed algorithms scale very well, as they show efficiencies in the range of 80 to 100%.

Markovian models have been used for about a century now for the evaluation of the performance and dependability of computer and communication systems. In this paper, we give a concise overview of the most widely used classes of Markovian models, their solution and application. After a brief introduction to performance and dependability evaluation in general, we introduce discrete-time Markov chains, continuous-time Markov chains and semi-Markov chains. Stepwisely, we develop the main equations that govern the steady-state and the transient behaviour of such Markov chains. We thereby emphasise on intuitively appealing explanations rather than on mathematical rigor. The relation between the various Markov chain types is explained in detail. Then, we discuss means to numerically solve the systems of linear equations (both direct and iterative ones) and the systems of differential equations that arise when solving for the steady-state and transient behaviour of Markovian models. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

In this paper, the concept of complete finite prefixes for process algebra expressions is extended to stochastic models. Events are supposed to happen after a delay that is determined by random variables assigned to the preceding conditions. Max-plus algebra expressions are shown to provide an elegant notation for stochastic prefixes not containing any decisions. Furthermore, they allow for the computation of performance measures. The derivation of the so called k-th occurrence times is shown in detail. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001
