Bi-Level Optimization (BLO) is originated from the area of economic game theory and then introduced into the optimization community. BLO is able to handle problems with a hierarchical structure, involving two levels of optimization tasks, where one task is nested inside the other. In machine learning and computer vision fields, despite the different motivations and mechanisms, a lot of complex problems, such as hyper-parameter optimization, multi-task and meta learning, neural architecture search, adversarial learning and deep reinforcement learning, actually all contain a series of closely related subproblms. In this paper, we first uniformly express these complex learning and vision problems from the perspective of BLO. Then we construct a best-response-based single-level reformulation and establish a unified algorithmic framework to understand and formulate mainstream gradient-based BLO methodologies, covering aspects ranging from fundamental automatic differentiation schemes to various accelerations, simplifications, extensions and their convergence and complexity properties. Last but not least, we discuss the potentials of our unified BLO framework for designing new algorithms and point out some promising directions for future research. © 2021, CC BY.

Teeth localization, segmentation, and labeling from intra-oral 3D scans are essential tasks in modern dentistry to enhance dental diagnostics, treatment planning, and population-based studies on oral health. However, developing automated algorithms for teeth analysis presents significant challenges due to variations in dental anatomy, imaging protocols, and limited availability of publicly accessible data. To address these challenges, the 3DTeethSeg’22 challenge was organized in conjunction with the International Conference on Medical Image Computing and computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) in 2022, with a call for algorithms tackling teeth localization, segmentation, and labeling from intraoral 3D scans. A dataset comprising a total of 1800 scans from 900 patients was prepared, and each tooth was individually annotated by a human-machine hybrid algorithm. A total of 6 algorithms were evaluated on this dataset. In this study, we present the evaluation results of the 3DTeethSeg’22 challenge. The emergence of sixth-generation and beyond communication systems is expected to fundamentally transform digital experiences through introducing unparalleled levels of intelligence, efficiency, and connectivity. A promising technology poised to enable this revolutionary vision is the wireless large AI model (WLAM), characterized by its exceptional capabilities in data processing, inference, and decision-making. In light of these remarkable capabilities, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of WLAM, elucidating its fundamental principles, diverse applications, critical challenges, and future research opportunities. We begin by introducing the background of WLAM and analyzing the key synergies with wireless networks, emphasizing the mutual benefits. Subsequently, we explore the foundational characteristics of WLAM, delving into their unique relevance in wireless environments. Then, the role of WLAM in optimizing wireless communication systems across various use cases and the reciprocal benefits are systematically investigated. Furthermore, we discuss the integration of WLAM with emerging technologies, highlighting their potential to enable transformative capabilities and breakthroughs in wireless communication. Finally, we thoroughly examine the high-level challenges hindering the practical implementation of WLAM and discuss pivotal future research directions. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. With the rapid development of information technology and the continuous evolution of personalized ser- vices, huge amounts of data are accumulated by large internet companies in the process of serving users. Moreover, dynamic data interactions increase the intentional/unintentional persistence of private infor- mation in different information systems. However, problems such as the cask principle of preserving pri- vate information among different information systems and the dif culty of tracing the source of privacy violations are becoming increasingly serious. Therefore, existing privacy-preserving schemes cannot pro- vide systematic privacy preservation. In this paper, we examine the links of the information life-cycle, such as information collection, storage, processing, distribution, and destruction. We then propose a the- ory of privacy computing and a key technology system that includes a privacy computing framework, a formal de nition of privacy computing, four principles that should be followed in privacy computing, ffect algorithm design criteria, evaluation of the privacy-preserving effect, and a privacy computing language. Finally, we employ four application scenarios to describe the universal application of privacy computing, and discuss the prospect of future research trends. This work is expected to guide theoretical research on user privacy preservation within open environments.

The traditional blockchain has the shortcoming that a single-chain can only deal with one or a few specific data types. The research question of how to make blockchain be able to deal with various data types has not been well studied. In this paper, we propose a single-chain based extension model of blockchain for fintech (SEBF). In the financial environment, we design a four-layer architecture for this model. By employing the external trusted oracle group and a financial regulator agency, a variety types of data can be effectively stored in the blockchain, such that the data type extension based on a single-chain is realized. Enhanced energy-efficient downlink resource allocation in green non-orthogonal multiple access systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique has the ability to support multiple transmissions simultaneously using the same physical resource, the idea of which achieves much enhanced performance for a system compared to the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques. Despite numerous advantages, this phenomenon of NOMA technique can bring additional interference for the neighboring ultra-dense networks if the power consumption of the system is not properly optimized. While targeting on the green communication concept, in this paper, we propose an energy-efficient downlink resource allocation scheme for a NOMA-equipped cellular network. The objective of this work is to allocate subchannels and power of the base station among the users so that the overall energy efficiency is maximized. Since this problem is NP-hard, we attempt to find an elegant solution with reasonable complexity that provides good performance for some realistic applications. To this end, we decompose the problem into a subchannel allocation subproblem followed by a power loading subproblem that allocates power to each user's data stream on each of its allocated subchannels. We first employ a many-to-many matching model under the assumption of uniform power loading in order to obtain the solution of the first subproblem with reasonable performance. Once the the subchanneluser mapping information is known from the first solution, we propose a geometric programming (GP)-based power loading scheme upon approximating the energy efficiency of the system by a ratio of two posynomials. The techniques adopted for these subproblems better exploit the available multi-user diversity compared to the techniques used in an earlier work. Having observed the computational overhead of the GP-based power loading scheme, we also propose a suboptimal computationally-efficient algorithm for the power loading subproblem with a polynomial time complexity that provides reasonably good performance. Identifying if a subsurface target is salt or not automatically and accurately is of vital importance to oil drilling. But unfortunately, obtaining the precise position of large salt deposits is very difficult. Professional seismic imaging still requires the interpretation of salt bodies by experts. This leads to very subjective, highly variable renderings. More alarmingly, it leads to potentially dangerous situations for drillers in oil and gas companies. In this paper, a Squeeze-Extraction Feature Pyramid networks (referred to as Se-FPN) was proposed to tackle the task of image segmentation of salt deposits. Specifically, we utilized SeNet as backbone so as to implicitly learn to suppress irrelevant regions in an input image while highlighting salient features useful for the task. Considering the importance of multi-scales information, we proposed an improved FPN to integrate information of different scales. In order to further fuse the information from multiple scales, the Hypercolumns module was inserted at the end of the network. The proposed Se-FPN has been applied to the TGS Salt Identification Challenge and achieved high quality segmentation effect. The Mean Intersection over Union value can reach 0.86.

Bi-directional mission offloading for agile space-air-ground integrated networks

Space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN) provide great strengths in extending the capability of ground wireless networks. On the other hand, with rich spectrum and computing resources, the ground networks can also assist space-air networks to accomplish resource-intensive or power-hungry missions, enhancing the capability and sustainability of the space-air networks. Therefore, bi-directional mission offloading can make full use of the advantages of SAGIN and benefits both space-air and ground networks. In this article, we identify the key role of network reconfiguration in coordinating heterogeneous resources in SAGIN, and study how network function virtualization (NFV) and service function chaining (SFC) enable agile mission offloading. A case study validates the performance gain brought by bi-directional mission offloading. Future research issues are outlooked as the bi-directional mission offloading framework opens a new trail in releasing the full potentials of SAGIN. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications refers to an intelligent and connected vehicular network where all vehicles and infrastructure systems are interconnected with each other. Data dissemination is playing an increasingly significant role in enhancing the network connectivity and data transmission performance. However, conventional scenarios and protocols cannot satisfy the growing pluralistic and superior quality of services (QoS) requirements of included vehicles. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted data dissemination protocol with proactive caching at the vehicles and an advanced file sharing strategy for revolutionizing communications. Specifically, in the proactive caching phase, we employ UAVs to act as flying base stations (BSs) for information interactions. Considering the time-variant network topology, we further propose a spatial scheduling (SS) algorithm for the trajectory optimization of each UAV, which can expedite the caching process and boost the system throughput. Then in the file sharing phase, based on the previous caching status, we provide a relay ordering algorithm to enhance the network transmission performance. Numerical results verify that our proposed UAV-assisted data transmission protocol can achieve a desirable system performance in terms of the downloading process, network throughput, and average data delivery delay.

In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient hybrid precoding design for integrated multicast-unicast millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the simultaneous wireless information and power transform is considered at receivers. We adopt two sparse radio frequency chain antenna structures at the base station (BS), i.e., fully-connected and subarray structures, and design the codebook-based analog precoding according to the different structures. Then, we formulate a joint digital multicast, unicast precoding and power splitting ratio optimization problem to maximize the energy efficiency of the system, while the maximum transmit power at the BS and minimum harvested energy at receivers are considered. Due to its difficulty to directly solve the formulated problem, we equivalently transform the fractional objective function into a subtractive form one and propose a two-loop iterative algorithm to solve it. For the outer loop, the classic Bi-section iterative algorithm is applied. For the inner loop, we transform the formulated problem into a convex one by successive convex approximation techniques and propose an iterative algorithm to solve it. Meanwhile, to reduce the complexity of the inner loop, we develop a zero forcing (ZF) technique-based low complexity iterative algorithm. Specifically, the ZF technique is applied to cancel the inter-unicast interference and the first order Taylor approximation is used for the convexification of the non-convex constraints in the original problem.
