Slot filling and intent detection are two highly correlated tasks in spoken language understanding (SLU). Recent SLU research attempts to explore zero-shot prompting techniques in large language models to alleviate the data scarcity problem. Nevertheless, the existing prompting work ignores the cross-task interaction information for SLU, which leads to sub-optimal performance. To solve this problem, we present the pioneering work of Cross-task Interactive Prompting (CroPrompt) for SLU, which enables the model to interactively leverage the information exchange across the correlated tasks in SLU. Additionally, we further introduce a multi-task self-consistency mechanism to mitigate the error propagation caused by the intent information injection. We conduct extensive experiments on the standard SLU benchmark and the results reveal that CroPrompt consistently outperforms the existing prompting approaches. In addition, the multi-task self-consistency mechanism can effectively ease the error propagation issue, thereby enhancing the performance. We hope this work can inspire more research on cross-task prompting for SLU. © 2025 IEEE.

A new weighted rough set and improved BP neural network method for predicting forest fires

To solve the quality problems of redundant risk elements, data imbalance, and noisy samples, which are commonly found in forest fire datasets, and to further improve the accuracy of forest fire risk prediction. In this paper, a forest fire prediction method is proposed, which combines a probability-weighted rough set attribute reduction (PWRS-AR) strategy with a particle swarm optimization improved BP neural network (PSO-I-BPNN) for forest fire prediction. Firstly, a probabilistic weighted rough set attribute reduction method is designed to effectively eliminate non-critical and redundant features in the dataset and simplify the input space of the neural network. Subsequently, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed to refine the BP neural network (BPNN), aiming to elevate both the precision and efficiency of forest fire prediction. To validate the method's effectiveness, experiments are conducted on three representative forest fire datasets. The results show that compared with the traditional machine learning prediction methods, the proposed forest fire prediction model achieves a significant improvement in prediction accuracy and is more suitable for early warning and disaster prevention and mitigation strategies in forest fire-prone areas. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

As a powerful forgery operation in the image content security area, image inpainting based on deep generative networks can yield visually appealing outputs but often produces ambiguous artifacts, especially in boundary and high semantic areas. To address this issue, a novel end-to-end network with gradient semantics and spatial-smooth attention (GS-SSA) is proposed, which combines a gradient learning network and an image inpainting network. The gradient learning network is meant to properly anticipate the gradient semantics in the hole region and get a complete gradient semantic map. The image inpainting network utilizes the complete gradient semantic map to better repair the missing pixels and obtain the final inpainting results. Moreover, spatial-smooth attention is introduced into the image inpainting network, considering both the spatial structural relations and the surrounding information in the hole region. Experimental results on public datasets show the superiority of the proposed method, especially in large-hole region tasks. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.

Automating gamification personalization: To the user and beyond

Personalized gamification explores knowledge about the users to tailor gamification designs to improve one-size-fits-all gamification. The tailoring process should simultaneously consider user and contextual characteristics (e.g., activity to be done and geographic location), which leads to several occasions to tailor. Consequently, tools for automating gamification personalization are needed. The problems that emerge are that which of those characteristics are relevant and how to do such tailoring are open questions, and that the required automating tools are lacking. We tackled these problems in two steps. First, we conducted an exploratory study, collecting participants’ opinions on the game elements they consider the most useful for different learning activity types (LAT) via survey. Then, we modeled opinions through conditional decision trees to address the aforementioned tailoring process. Second, as a product from the first step, we implemented a recommender system that suggests personalized gamification designs (which game elements to use), addressing the problem of automating gamification personalization. Our findings i) present empirical evidence that LAT, geographic locations, and other user characteristics affect users’ preferences, ii) enable defining gamification designs tailored to user and contextual features simultaneously, and iii) provide technological aid for those interested in designing personalized gamification. The main implications are that demographics, game-related characteristics, geographic location, and LAT to be done, as well as the interaction between different kinds of information (user and contextual characteristics), should be considered in defining gamification designs and that personalizing gamification designs can be improved with aid from our recommender system. © 2021, CC BY.

The rapid advancement of science has underscored the importance of collaboration among scientists. While many studies have explored the structure of collaboration networks, there is a lack of comprehensive quantitative research on the temporal patterns of these collaborations. This study addresses this gap by analyzing temporal scientific collaboration networks in physics, spanning from 1960 to 2021, using complex network theories and methods. By constructing five-year temporal collaborative networks and employing metrics such as network diameter, shortest path, and clustering coefficient, this research reveals an increase in connectivity and small-world characteristics over time. Additionally, community detection highlights a shift towards specialized collaboration patterns and increased cross-community interactions. The study also uncovers growing centrality and social stratification within the research system, with the "rich club" phenomenon indicating strong and dynamic collaborations among highly connected scientists. Temporal analysis shows that while ultra-high connectivity scientists engage in fluctuating relationships, medium-high connectivity scientists maintain more stable collaborations. These findings provide insights into the evolution of collaborative behaviors and inform science policy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Science as Exploration in a Knowledge Landscape: Tracing Hotspots or Seeking Opportunity?

The selection of research topics by scientists can be viewed as an exploration process conducted by individuals with cognitive limitations traversing a complex cognitive landscape influenced by both individual and social factors. While existing theoretical investigations have provided valuable insights, the intricate and multifaceted nature of modern science hinders the implementation of empirical experiments. This study leverages advancements in deep learning techniques to investigate the patterns and dynamic mechanisms of topic-transition among scientists. By constructing the knowledge space across 6 large-scale disciplines, we depict the trajectories of scientists' topic transitions within this space, measuring the flow and distance of research regions across different sub-spaces. Our findings reveal a predominantly conservative pattern of topic transition at the individual level, with scientists primarily exploring local knowledge spaces. Furthermore, simulation modeling analysis identifies research intensity, driven by the concentration of scientists within a specific region, as the key facilitator of topic transition. Conversely, the knowledge distance between fields serves as a significant barrier to exploration. Notably, despite potential opportunities for breakthrough discoveries at the intersection of subfields, empirical evidence suggests that these opportunities do not exert a strong pull on scientists, leading them to favor familiar research areas. Our study provides valuable insights into the exploration dynamics of scientific knowledge production, highlighting the influence of individual cognition, social factors, and the intrinsic structure of the knowledge landscape itself. ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023 The Authors
