Speckle reduction of polarimetric SAR images based on neural ICA

The polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PSAR) images are modeled by a mixture model that results from the product of two independent models, one characterizes the target response and the other characterizes the speckle phenomenon. For the scene interpretation, it is desirable to separate between the target response and the speckle. For this purpose, we proposed a new speckle reduction approach using independent component analysis (ICA) based on statistical formulation of PSAR image. In addition, we apply four ICA algorithms on real PSAR images and compare their performances. The comparison reveals characteristic differences between the studied neural ICA algorithms, complementing the results obtained earlier. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Independent component analysis (ICA) has shown success in the separation of sources in lots of applications. However, in synthenic aperture radar (SAR) images the noise is multiplicative, so the applicability of ICA is seriously reduced. This paper proposes a new robust independent component analysis neural network (RICANN) that improves the robustness of ICA by adding outlier rejection rule. Its application in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is discussed. The results show the potential usage in SAR image processing problems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Presented in this paper is a neural network method used for recognition of spherical bodies set grain-size distribution using a data taken from envelope surface of a given set. Development was carried out in accordance with principles designed for neurocomputer-based measurement devices. These principles concern measurement devices featured by complicated nonlinear dependency between physical parameter being measured and indirect measurement values. In simple applications this dependency is substituted by scale calibration function for this measurement device. Results presented in this article were obtained using 3D-model set. Diameters of bodies, included in this set, lit the range used as standard at ore mining and processing enterprises. Described herein are the neural network algorithm, as well as a method used for informative training and test sets composition, required for effective training and verification of neural network system. Moreover, we present a comparison between neural network approach and known linear methods.

Improved conjugate residual algorithm for large symmetric linear systems

The conjugate residual (CR) algorithm is a Krylov subspace algorithm that can be used to obtain fast solutions for symmetric linear systems with very large and very sparse coefficient matrices. By changing the computation sequence in the CR algorithm, this paper proposes an improved Conjugate Residual (ICR) algorithm. The numerical stability of ICR algorithm is same as CR algorithm, but the synchronization overhead that represents the bottleneck of the parallel performance is effectively reduced by a factor of two. And all inner products of a single iteration step are independent and communication time required for inner product can be over lapped efficiently with computation time of vector updates. From the theoretical and experimental analysis it is found that ICR algorithm is faster than CR algorithm as the number of processors in creases. The experiments performed on a 64-processor cluster indicate that ICR is approximately 30% faster than CR.

The superconducting charge-phase “quantronium” qubit is considered in order to develop a model for the measurement process used in the experiment of Vion et al. [Science 296, 886 (2002)]. For this model we propose a method for including the bias current in the readout process in a fundamentally irreversible way, which to first order is approximated by the Josephson junction tilted-washboard potential phenomenology. The decohering bias current is introduced in the form of a Lindblad operator and the Wigner function for the current-biased readout Josephson junction is derived and analyzed. During the readout current pulse used in the quantronium experiment we find that the coherence of the qubit initially prepared in a symmetric superposition state is lost at a time of 0.2ns after the bias current pulse has been applied, a time scale that is much shorter than the experimental readout time. Additionally we look at the effect of Johnson-Nyquist noise with zero mean from the current source during the qubit manipulation and show that the decoherence due to the irreversible bias current description is an order of magnitude smaller than that found through adding noise to the reversible tilted-washboard potential model. Our irreversible bias current model is also applicable to persistent-current-based qubits where the state is measured according to its flux via a small-inductance direct-current superconducting quantum interference device.

In this paper we introduce the single chip implementation of a 16 voices wavetable synthesizer. All digital functions (control and waveform generation) are contained in a single platform FPGA chip (Xilinx Virtex 2 Pro). Only the digital to analog conversion is done by a standard 96 kHz audio DAC (AD 1785). In the first version the synthesizer is controlled via standard RS 232 interface.

SFLASH was chosen as one of the final selection of the NESSIE project in 2003. It is one of the most efficient digital signature scheme and is suitable for implementation on memory-constrained devices such as smartcards. Side channel attacks (SCA) are a serious threat to memory-constrained devices. If the implementation on them is careless, the secret key may be revealed. In this paper, we experimentally analyze the effectiveness of a side channel attack on SFLASH. There are two different secret keys for SFLASH, namely the proper secret key (s, t) and the random seed Δ used for the hash function SHA-1. Whereas many papers discussed the security of (s, t), little is known about that of Δ. Steinwandt et al. proposed a theoretical DPA for finding Δ by observing the XOR operations. We propose another DPA on Δ using the addition operation modulo 232, and present an experimental result of the DPA. After obtaining the secret key Δ, the underlying problem of SFLASH can be reduced to the C* problem broken by Patarin. From our simulation, about 1408 pairs of messages and signatures are needed to break SFLASH. Consequently, SHA-1 must be carefully implemented in order to resist SCA on SFLASH*. Conversion between different adaptive hypermedia systems has barely been proposed, yet alone tested in realistic settings. This paper presents the evaluation of the interoperability of two adaptive (educational) hypermedia systems, MOT and WHURLE. The evaluation is performed with the help of a class of thirty-one students enrolled in the fourth year of the "Politehnica" University of Bucharest, who were taking a one-week intensive course on Adaptive Hypermedia. This paper describes and interprets our first experiments of the "write once, deliver many" paradigm of adaptive hypermedia creation. Copyright 2005 ACM.

The key procedure of exploratory projection pursuit is to optimize a criterion function, which is called the projection pursuit index. The cook family index estimated by the wavelet kernel function is given in this paper. And the asymptotic unbiasedness and the convergence property of the projection index are proved. Also, as the fast computing of this kind projection index, it is suited for the processing of a large data. Some results of projection index based on the wavelet kernel estimation are compared with that of the Gauss kernel estimation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper investigates the application of a knowledge-based approach, founded on semantic networks, to the automatic land use mapping assisted by low resolution satellite images. Like the visual photo-interpretation, the automatic image interpretation considers scene and sensors knowledge, delivered by an expert photo-interpreter, as well as additional information about the region like the digital elevation model, the position of the emergent rocks, the mapping of the water bodies and the road-network. By this means, the analysis of a scene can be automatically performed, mimicking the reasoning of the photo-interpreter. The implementation of such proposal employed the GEOAIDA [J. Buckner et al., June 2001] system, a flexible environment for image interpretation developed at the University of Hanover, which exploits semantic networks to structure the domain specific knowledge. In the reported experiments, a multispectral SPOT 3 XS image was analysed resulting were evaluated and compared with a manually made reference map of the investigated scene. The automatically obtained results were evaluated and compared with a manually made reference map of the investigated scene. The experimental results demonstrate the potential of a knowledge-based approach for low resolution satellite images interpretation.
