This paper describes a music searching system based on an automatic indexing process created over a pattern recognition tool and MPEG-7 standard. We present a complete analysis of the involved technologies integration process and show a reference measure in the feasibility of this kind of application not only in the research environment but also in the production of real systems.

Considering video transmission over an ATM network for a video on demand system, we propose a server of quality (SoQ) that has the main function of fitting the video transmission rate to the available network bandwidth. The SoQ uses a "backpropagation" neural network to fit the MPEG quantization coefficients in a nonlinear way. Statistical multiplexing in packet-switched networks creates problems for packetized voice streams by introducing variable delays on delivered packets. The resulting jitter needs to be filtered so that received voice packets can be reconstructed as a continuous stream at the receiver. One common approach to reconstruction is to play back the receiver voice data after a delay offset from the departure time at the source of the packet stream. While the added delay helps filter jitter, one cannot introduce too much delay, otherwise, interactiveness suffers. This paper presents a new technique to find the necessary delay offset (or play-back delay) to recreate the original voice data stream. This technique gives the user control over the fraction of packets that should arrive in time to be played back so that the added play-back delay can be effectively minimized.

The ATM service category UBR is intended for non-real-time applications that do not require guaranteed QoS commitments. With additional, relatively inexpensive control functions such as packet discard schemes, UBR could become a cost-effective alternative for the transmission of data traffic; offering a straightforward and flexible solution as opposed to nrt-VBR and GFR that applies stricter traffic specifications as well as ABR with its sophisticated and complex rate-control protocol. This paper presents the results obtained from a comprehensive set of experiments with TCP over UBR, comprising of measurements taken on different protocol layers. The goal is to experimentally investigate the performance of UBR to carry TCP traffic, to evaluate the performance gain achievable by packet discard schemes and TCP parameter tuning, to study the influence of the TCP implementation, and in a final step, to relate the measurements to simulation results.

With the increasing availability of huge quantities of manufacturing data, and the pressures of continuous process improvement and scrap reduction, engineers are beginning to use machine learning techniques along with traditional statistical methods. In this paper, we discuss the application of standard machine learning techniques to analyze, classify, and predict the quality of metal etch using RIE. Three types of data were used to characterize a metal etch: in-process sensor data from the etch chamber, metrology data for critical dimension measurements before and after etch, and metal resistance measurements from probe tests. Three machine learning paradigms were applied: neural networks, induction learning, and case-based reasoning. This paper describes the techniques used, the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn.
