The paper introduces and analyzes the synchronization concept used in a new B-ISDN multimedia communication system. The methods proposed have been simulated and then implemented in the actual prototype system. As opposed to the common time stamping concepts, we use a hierarchical approach that first smooths each stream timing and then synchronizes the streams to each other by delaying the "earlier" ones. The concept is based on the "Adaptive Method", but it has been extended and improved to support framed video and audio as well as unstructured, constant bit rate voice streams without additional framing overhead. Another interesting point is that the multimedia storage device can preserve the relative timing information between the streams, i.e. there is no difference whether the transmission is live or stored. It is also a convenience of this synchronization and storage concept, that the operating system can keep the stored video and audio tracks themselves, as well as their directory information on the same disk.

This paper deals with a neural network solution for a problem specific to the power industry. In particular, the unit commitment problem is addressed. This paper is an extension of the results given in Watta and Hassona (1994), where the static unit commitment problem was discussed. The temporal problem involves the scheduling of unit commitment over a planning horizon of more than one hour. Using a cascade and interconnect strategy, the coupled gradient network given in the above paper and Watta (1994) is extended to handle the temporal case. As before, though, the dynamics of the network are defined by gradient descent on a global energy function, and hence the network converges to locally optimal solutions. After formulating the model, the parameter selection involved in actually simulating the network is discussed. Finally, this paper concludes with a discussion of some simulation results.< >

Recently, the extension of Hebbian learning to nonlinear units has received increased attention. Some successful applications of this learning rule have been reported as well; however, a fundamental understanding of the capability of this learning rule is still lacking. In this paper, we pursue a better understanding of what the network is actually doing by exploring the statistical characteristics of the criterion function and interpreting the nonlinear unit as a probability integral transformation. To improve the capability of the nonlinear units, data preprocessing is suggested. A better data preprocessing leads to the development of a two-layer network which consists of linear units in the first layer and nonlinear units in the second layer. The linear units capture and filter the linear aspect of the data and the nonlinear units discover the nonlinear effects, such as clustering and other general nonlinear associations among the variables. Several potential applications are demonstrated through the simulation results given throughout this paper.< >

We propose the SINA (Superhighway Information Networking Architecture) as a model of the architecture for an information network in telecommunication network environment and present its prototype. The SINA provides the functions for interaction between the SMFAs (system management functional areas) and operator and the functions for monitoring and collecting information about VC (virtual channel) and VP (virtual path) of the physical managed objects as well as the functions for configuration, fault, performance, security, and accounting management. The prototype of the SINA uses TCP/IP in UNIX environment as a DCN (data communication network). Each of the functional building blocks is interfaced with the DPE (distributed processing environment) through CMISE (common management information service element). Detailed structures and specifications of the SINA are currently being developed. We are now building the DPE.< >

JVTOS (Joint Viewing and Tele-Operation Service), which is being implemented within CEC/RACE II project CIO (R2060), is a new teleservice for high-speed networks enabling distributed users to work in a collaborative fashion with multimedia. Core functionality of JVTOS is provided by an application sharing service that allows multimedia applications to be displayed and interacted with on multiple users' workstations simultaneously. The focus of this paper is on the audio/video elements of shared applications. We discuss the problems of sharing multimedia applications and describe our conception that supports interoperability between heterogeneous platforms.

Da CaPo provides an environment for the dynamic configuration of protocols. Configuration is done with respect to application requirements, properties of the offered network services, and the available resources in the end systems. The goal of the configuration is to provide a service with minimal necessary functionality for each request, i.e., to diminish protocol complexity and so to increase protocol performance. Modules serve as basic building blocks for the protocol configuration. Common software engineering principles like encapsulation and information hiding as well as a unified module interface allow the unconstrained configuration of modules to protocols. The Da CaPo runtime environment links modules to protocols in one UNIX process and realizes an efficient data transport inside the end systems because performance reducing operations like data copying or process switches are minimized.< >
