A novel computational approach to predict activity of nuclear export signals

A nuclear export signal (NES) is a sequence of amino acids, which is a protein localization signal, and contributes to regulate localization of cellular proteins. In recent peering works, activity of NESs were introduced in computational methods, which perform significantly well in identifying unknown NESs even from huge datasets, but suffer from a shortage that only a small number of NESs are associated with experimental verified active scores. In this work, we propose a novel computational method to predict active score of NESs. Specifically, we firstly abstract relevant features to NES activity, and then construct a mathematical model based on principal component analysis (PCA) to find each feature's contribution to activity. In this way, a method to calculate active score of unknown NESs is achieved. In data experiments, it is obtained that our method can achieve accuracy rate 80%. The activity of an unknown NES candidate can give us a preliminary understanding of it, and can be used to identify positive NESs from the negative ones. This paper presents a novel Simple Human Learning Optimization (SHLO) algorithm, which is inspired by human learning mechanisms. Three learning operators are developed to generate new solutions and search for the optima by mimicking the learning behaviors of human. The 0-1 knapsack problems are adopted as benchmark problems to validate the performance of SHLO, and the results are compared with those of binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO), modified binary differential evolution (MBDE), binary fruit fly optimization algorithm (bFOA) and adaptive binary harmony search algorithm (ABHS). The experimental results demonstrate that SHLO significantly outperforms BPSO, MBDE, bFOA and ABHS. Considering the ease of implementation and the excellence of global search ability, SHLO is a promising optimization tool. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid FUZZY P + ID controller to stabilize the towing cable tension between a cable ship and a burying system. First, we develop the model of a winch system driven by valve-controlled hydraulic motors and evaluate the step responses yielded by the conventional PID and the proposed FUZZY P+ID controllers using simulations. The comparative studies show that the control performance yielded by the FUZZY P+ID controller is superior. We replace the existing PID controller implemented on the towing winch with the FUZZY P + ID controller for burying cable tasks at speed up to 1 knot under sea waves with significant variations (peak-to-peak) from 1.5 to 2.5 meters. The real applications demonstrate that the FUZZY P + ID controller is much more robust than the conventional PID controller.

Impact of Electric Vehicles on a Carbon Constrained Power System—A Post 2020 Case Study

Electric vehicles (EVs) offer great potential to move from fossil fuel dependency in transport once some of the technical barriers related to battery reliability and grid integration are resolved. The European Union has set a target to achieve a 10% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 relative to 2005 levels. This target is binding in all the European Union member states. If electric vehicle issues are overcome then the challenge is to use as much renewable energy as possible to achieve this target. In this paper, the impacts of electric vehicle charged in the all-Ireland single wholesale electricity market after the 2020 deadline passes is investigated using a power system dispatch model. For the purpose of this work it is assumed that a 10% electric vehicle target in the Republic of Ireland is not achieved, but instead 8% is reached by 2025 considering the slow market uptake of electric vehicles. Our experimental study shows that the increasing penetration of EVs could contribute to approach the target of the EU and Ireland government on emissions reduction, regardless of different charging scenarios. Furthermore, among various charging scenarios, the off-peak charging is the best approach, contributing 2.07% to the target of 10% reduction of Greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

In this paper, we propose a distributed cooperative voltage equalization strategy in order to balance the voltages of the series-connected super-capacitors, which is the power supply of energy storage light rail vehicles. Taking each super-capacitor cell as an agent in multi-agent systems, the voltage equalization problem can be formulated as a cooperative tracking problem. The sparse communication network among the super-capacitors in the cyber layer can be modeled by a digraph. As the voltage changes within a limited range, a general saturation function is put forward to guarantee the boundedness of the control input. Based on the nearest neighborhood rule, a bounded voltage equalization controller with tunable control gains is designed accordingly. The proposed voltage equalization methodology is distributed and not using a central controller. Each super-capacitor cell only need its voltage information and its neighbors, the desired control objective can be accomplished by local interaction in a cooperative way. Under the assumption that the digraph has a spanning tree, the asymptotically stability of the overall close-loop system is rigorously proved with the aid of a novel Lyapunov function integrating Lasalle invariant principle. The voltage equalization has been achieved by the proposed cooperative control approach, which is verified by the simulations. under different initial conditions, cooperative objectives and different network sizes.

The paper addresses the problem of coverage testing of industrial automation software represented in the IEC 61499 standard, one of the recent standards for distributed control system design. Contrary to model-based testing (MBT), the paper focuses on implementation coverage, not model coverage. An approach based on evolutionary algorithms is presented which generates coverage test suites for both basic and composite IEC 61499 function blocks. It employs two third-party tools, FBDK and EvoSuite. The evaluation of the approach was performed on a set of control applications for two lab-scale demonstration plants. Results show that the approach is applicable and shows good performance at least on basic function blocks. The generated tests suites helped to discover several unreachable system parts, which pinpointed errors in the systems under test.

This paper considers the problem of global output feedback stabilization via sampled-data control for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems subject to time delays. The system satisfies a lower-triangular linear growth condition with unknown growth rates. A new inductive method is first introduced to estimate the state growth in the presence of time delays and nonvarnishing nonlinearities. When only the output of the system is measurable, with the help of output domination approach, a sampled-data output feedback controller is constructed to solve the global stabilization problem. The proposed sampled-data controller is linear in structure and therefore can be easily implemented in practice.

This paper established a closed-loop temperature control system for a spatially-separated atomic layer deposition (S-ALD) reactor using generalized predictive control (GPC) algorithm. The GPC-based closed-loop control system rapidly and precisely stabilized the reactor temperature in the presence of thermal field disturbances. Compared with the proportion-integration differentiation (PID) control commonly used for S-ALD, the closed-loop GPC system attenuated reaction temperature oscillations when producing two-element nano-scale thin films. Furthermore, the proposed GPC system demonstrated the superiority in multi-element nano-laminates depositing efficiency by reducing the settling time with a substrate moving between different reactors. Electrical and optical properties of films verified the feasibility of the proposed GPC system. Finally, experimental results presented that the microstructure of the deposited ALD nanometer thin film was improved with the developed GPC system, compared with the PID strategy. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

The equivalent-input-disturbance(EID) approach is presented for time-delay systems with periodic disturbances in this *** the construction and the stability analysis with traditional equivalent-input-disturbance(EID) methodology being inadequate in time-delay systems,we propose a new configuration to reject periodic ***,we change the conventional EID estimator to be a repetitive controller to compensate for periodic ***,to guarantee stability of the system,we present the analysis on stabilization condition with time-delay considered using linear-matrix-inequality(LMI),and derive a state feedback *** last,the simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method by comparing with the traditional EID control method.

Identification of emission sources of umbral flashes using phase congruency

The emission sources of umbral flashes （UFs） are believed to be closely related to running umbral and penumbral waves, and are concluded to be associated with umbral dots in the solar photosphere. Accurate identification of emission sources of UFs is crucial for investigating these physical phenomena and their inherent relationships. A relatively novel model of shape perception, namely phase congruency （PC）, uses phase information in the Fourier domain to identify the geometrical shape of the region of interest in different intensity levels, rather than intensity or gradient. Previous studies indicate that the model is suitable for identifying features with low contrast and low luminance. In the present paper, we applied the PC model to identify the emission sources of UFs and to locate their positions. For illustrating the high performance of our proposed method, two time sequences of Ca n H images derived from the Hinode/SOT on 2010 August 10 and 2013 August 20 were used. Furthermore, we also compared these results with the analysis results that are identified by the traditional/classical identification methods, including the gray-scale adjusted technique and the running difference technique. The result of our analysis demonstrates that our proposed method is more accurate and effective than the traditional identification methods when applied to identifying the emission sources of UFs and to locating their positions.
