The Kerr electro-optic field mapping technique has been used to study space charge effects in high voltage pulsed propylene carbonate (C/sub 4/H/sub 6/O/sub 3/) using stainless steel parallel-plate electrodes. Measurements presented here were taken using a circular polariscope with aligned polarizers at room temperature (T/spl sim/20/spl deg/C) with average initial electric field strengths of E/sub 0//spl sim/52 kV/cm and for measurement times ranging from 10 /spl mu/s to 1 ms. The light intensity pictures were analyzed along a line in the center of the electrode gap. From the light intensity distribution the electric field and space charge were calculated as a function of position and time. The calculated space charge distributions show both positive and negative charge injections from the electrodes as well as bulk charge dissociation.

A new technique utilizing combination of feature extraction by change vector analysis and analysis of distances between features allows improvement in change detection of linear features such as roads and water channels. The technique reduces false detection of changes due to image calibration differences, illumination differences and misregistration. The method was applied to areas of steep climatic gradient between Mediterranean and extreme desert regions.

An artificial neural network (ANN) for change detection from multi-temporal satellite images, which was reported in I. Feldberg (2001), has been further developed and tested, as part of a study of an area of high spatio-temporal heterogeneity along a climatic gradient between humid and and climate regions. Four recognition classes, "positive change", "negative change", "false change", and "no change" were learned by a backpropagation feedforward ANN and then applied to Landsat images that were acquired over the study area in 1992 and 1997. A comparison with existing classification techniques indicates, in many instances, significantly improved performance due to the ANN developed.

The coordination of interdependencies between tasks in collaborative environments is a very important and difficult endeavour. The separation between tasks and interdependencies allows for the use of different coordination policies in the same collaborative environment by changing only the coordination mechanisms that control the interdependencies. This paper presents a framework for the definition of interdependencies that frequently occur in collaborative activities. By means of a clear characterization of interdependencies, it is possible to identify coordination mechanisms to manage them, opening the way toward a powerful coordination tool capable of encompassing a wide range of collaborative applications. An implementation of the coordination model of a collaborative virtual environment based on the proposed framework is given as example.

In this paper, a solution to a manipulation control problem (target identification and grasping) using a real platform in combination with a vision system is proposed. The task for the end-effector is to approach a randomly placed spherical object of known size. The control law is approximated by using an approach based on fuzzy logic. The controller determines the parameters of the target (a spherical object acquired from the vision system mounted on the manipulator) using a vision algorithm. The fuzzy rules are built in a supervised way, after studying the behavior of the system. Experimental results obtained using an industrial manipulator (AM1 with 6 DOF model in Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Korea) are presented.

This paper proposes a genetic-based algorithm for surface reconstruction of three-dimension (3-D) objects from a group of contours representing its section plane lines. The algorithm can optimize the triangulation of the surface of 3-D objects with a multi-objective optimization function to meet the needs of a wide range of applications. Further, a new crossover operator for triangulation and a new 3-D quadrilateral mutation operator are also introduced.

A concept called the decomposition of multivariable control rules is presented. Fuzzy control is the application of the compositional rule of inference and it is shown how the inference of the rule base with complex rules can be reduced to the inference of a number of rule bases with simple rules. A fuzzy logic based controller is applied to a simple magnetic suspension system. The controller has proportional, integral and derivative separate parts which are tuned independently. This means that all parts have their own rule bases. By testing it was found that the fuzzy PID controller gives better performance over a typical operational range then a traditional linear PID controller. The magnetic suspension system and the contact-less optical position measurement system have been developed and applied for the comparative analysis of the real-time conventional PID control and the fuzzy control. © 1999 Elsevier science B.V. This paper proposes a strategy for analyzing unknown, filled forms. First, horizontal and vertical line segments are detected, extracted and filtered. A recursive splitting and merging algorithm eliminates overlapping segments, filters false segments, and groups the segments into lines. Based on the extracted lines, an algorithm for rectangle extraction is proposed. We define the constraints between rectangles and edges. In a process of scanning the horizontal and vertical lines, candidate edges are validated and rectangles are generated if its surrounding edges and their combination are all valid. The process is recursively applied. It can tolerate large breaks in form lines, ignore irrelevant segments and deal with embedded rectangles. Experiments on a collection of forms show that our approach works well on poor quality images.

An intelligent monitoring and control system is presented that regulates the total heat input in order to maintain constant fusion zone geometry under varying thermal regions. The integrity and quality of the final fused joint rely heavily on the geometrical properties of the fusion zone, in particular the width-to-depth ratio. Assessment of the joint geometry is performed using Rayleigh's suspended droplet analogy in which the mass, and hence the volume, of the droplet is related to the natural resonant frequency of the molten region. A nonintrusive, noncontact, top-side sensor collects the arc light reflected from the oscillations of the molten metal's surface. An improved approach for inducing and monitoring the oscillations of a molten weld pool is presented. A software-based phase locked loop (PLL) technique enables synchronized excitation of the molten pool. Improved locking and tracking characteristics in the presence of noise, signal distortions and harmonic conditions are achieved through the use of intelligent signal monitoring algorithms which co-exist in parallel and cooperate with the PLL. Dynamic reconfiguration of the PLL's digital filter coefficients allows superior tracking performance over a wide range of resonant frequency conditions. A fuzzy logic rule set, modeled after expert human welding knowledge, regulates the total heat input to the fusion process in order to demonstrate this unique synchronous excitation, monitoring and control technique. A detailed discussion regarding each component's contribution to the overall system is provided. Finally, an in-depth comparison between various open and closed loop experiments of the joining process is discussed.

System level design is increasingly turning towards FPGAs to take advantage of their low cost and fast prototyping. In this paper we present a timing driven partitioning approach for an architecturally constrained multi-FPGA system. The partitioning approach uses path-based clustering based on the work by Dennis et al. (1995) and retiming. The board-level architecture is based on the PCB model consisting of four Xilinx 4013 FPGAs. The proposed algorithm has been tested on large scale real designs.
