Assessment of Multilevel Intransitive Noninterference by Nonblocking Analysis

Security of system behavior is a kind of information flow security, which is achieved by confusing the intruders via the indistinguishability of system behaviors. Noninterference is a typical notion to describe information flow security, for which multilevel intransitive noninterference (MINI) is an advanced variant. Since there is a lack of rigorous approach to assessing MINI, this article achieves so via observability theory. For systems modeled by labeled Petri nets (LPNs), two MINI properties, i.e., positive MINI (PMINI) and bipolar MINI (BMINI), are considered. First, a necessary and sufficient condition for their assessment is established via language equivalence. Language equivalence analyses for PMINI and BMINI are based on the existing trace equivalence and the proposed INI bisimulation, respectively. INI bisimulation is more comprehensive to describe negative noninterference than bisimulation. Second, another necessary and sufficient condition is established after the transformation of MINI assessment problem to nonblocking analysis problem. The core of such a problem transformation is the stepwise construction of nonblocking analyzer. This stepwise construction allows MINI assessment to proceed online before terminating at an appropriate time. In addition, this stepwise construction fully employs the concurrency of LPNs so that MINI can be assessed in a multithreaded way. Both online and multithreaded MINI assessments can improve assessment efficiency. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Prior-Boosted GRL: Microarchitecture Design Space Exploration via Graph Representation Learning

The design space exploration (DSE) of contemporary microprocessors faces a significant challenge of high-computational cost. In this context, we introduce Prior-boosted graph representation learning (GRL), a novel framework for the DSE of the microarchitectures the microprocessors underpinned by graph embeddings. Using GRL, Prior-boosted GRL constructs a compact and continuous vector space for design representation. This framework is further boosted by an efficient sampling algorithm informed by prior knowledge, which is instrumental in generating a superior set of initial designs to accelerate the exploration process. A well-designed ensemble surrogate model is combined with the multiobjective Bayesian optimization to explore the design space holistically within this graph-embedding domain. Rigorous experimental evaluations conducted on the RISC-V Berkeley-Out-of-Order Machine (BOOM) platform demonstrate that Prior-boosted GRL substantially surpasses preceding methods, achieving a 107.79% enhancement in Pareto front quality compared to the state-of-the-art DSE algorithm. It also outstrips manual designs on performance, power, and area metrics. As of this writing, Prior-boosted GRL holds the first place in the ICCAD 2022 CAD Contest evaluation platform. © 2024 IEEE.

Flexible, Super-stable, and Multifunctional Capacitive Pressure Sensors with Tilted Micropillar Array by Inclined Laser Ablation and Demolding

Flexible capacitive pressure sensors have garnered considerable interest across diverse applications, including medical monitoring, electronic skin, and robotic tactile systems, owing to their straightforward fabrication process, low energy consumption, and robust stability. In this paper, we introduce a new inclined laser ablation (ILA) combined with demolding technique for the fabrication of flexible capacitive sensors featuring a microstructured dielectric layer composed of a tilted micropillar array (TMA). The design parameters of TMA were systematically optimized, including the tilt angle of the micropillars, array gap, aspect ratio, and bottom film thickness. The resulting capacitive pressure sensor, equipped with 75° tilted micropillar arrays (aspect ratio of 5:1), demonstrates exceptional sensitivity (1.12 kPa-1) within the low-pressure range (0-2 kPa), rapid response and recovery times, a low pressure detection limit of 0.25 Pa, and transient response stability factor as high as 243.9. The proposed capacitive pressure sensor was validated for the detection and recognition of human motions when attached to various body parts. Additionally, the sensors also demonstrated significant potential for diverse applications, including tactile sensing, and Morse code communication. © 2025 IEEE.

Progressive Semantic-Visual Alignment and Refinement for Vision-Language Tracking

In recent years, vision-language tracking has drawn emerging attention in the tracking field. The critical challenge for the task is to fuse semantic representations of language information and visual representations of vision information. For this purpose, several vision-language tracking methods perform early or late fusion to fuse visual and semantic features. However, these methods cannot take full advantage of the transformer architecture to excavate useful cross-modal context at various levels. To this end, we propose a new progressive joint vision-language transformer (PJVLT) to progressively align and refine visual embedding with semantic embedding for vision-language tracking. Specifically, to align visual signals with semantic signals, we propose to insert a semantic-aware instance encoder layer (SAIEL) into each intermediate layer of transformer encoder to perform progressive alignment of visual and semantic features. Furthermore, to highlight the multi-modal feature channels and patches corresponding to target objects, we propose a unified channel communication patch interaction layer (CCPIL), which is plugged into each intermediate layer of transformer encoder to progressively activate target-aware channels and patches of aligned multi-modal features for fine-grained tracking. In general, by progressively aligning and refining visual features with semantic features in the transformer encoder, our PJVLT can adaptively excavate well-aligned vision-language context at coarse-to-fine levels, therefore highlighting target objects at various levels for more discriminative tracking. Experiments on several tracking datasets show that the proposed PJVLT can achieve favorable performance in comparison with both conventional trackers and other vision-language trackers. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Android malware authors often use packers to evade analysis. Although many unpacking tools have been proposed, they face two significant challenges: 1) They are easily impeded by anti-analysis techniques employed by packers, preventing efficient collection of hidden Dex data. 2) They are typically designed to unpack a specific packer and cannot handle malware packed with mixed packers. Consequently, many packed malware samples evade detection. To bridge this gap, we propose Gupacker , a novel generalized unpacking framework. Gupacker offers a generic solution for first-generation holistic packer by customizing the Android system source code. It identifies the type of packer and selects an appropriate unpacking function, constructs a deeper active call chain to achieve generic unpacking of second-generation function extraction packers, and uses JNI function and instruction monitoring to handle third-generation virtual obfuscation packer. On this basis, we counteract a diverse array of anti-analysis techniques. We conduct extensive experiments on 5K packed Android malware samples, comparing Gupacker with 2 commercial and 4 state-of-the-art academic unpacking tools. The results demonstrate that Gupacker significantly improves the efficiency of Android malware unpacking with acceptable system overhead. We analyze real packed applications based on Gupacker and found several are second-packed by attackers, including WPS for Android, with tens of millions of users. We receive and responsibly report 13 0day vulnerabilities and also assist in the remediation of all vulnerabilities. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

For deploying deep neural networks on edge devices with limited resources, binary neural networks (BNNs) have attracted significant attention, due to their computational and memory efficiency. However, once a neural network is binarized, finetuning it on edge devices becomes challenging because most conventional training algorithms for BNNs are designed for use on centralized servers and require storing real-valued parameters during training. To address this limitation, this paper introduces binary stochastic flip optimization (BinSFO), a novel training algorithm for BNNs. BinSFO employs a parameter update rule based on Boolean operations, eliminating the need to store real-valued parameters and thereby reducing memory requirements and computational overhead. In experiments, we demonstrated the effectiveness and memory efficiency of BinSFO in finetuning scenarios on six image classification datasets. BinSFO performed comparably to conventional training algorithms with a 70.7% smaller memory requirement. Code is released at https://***/TatsukichiShibuya/ICASSP2025_BinSFO. © 2025 IEEE.

A Data-Driven Adaptive Control Approach for Enhancing the Dynamic Response of VSGs in Varying Grid Conditions

Conventionally, a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is designed for islanded mode (IM) operation to meet specific operational requirements such as the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF). However, the operation of VSG designed for IM may not meet the operational and control criteria in grid connected mode (GCM) when the grid conditions vary. In addition, conventional VSG control technology does not consider the influence of the presynchronization scheme when connected to a weak grid, which degrades the RoCoF in IM. To overcome the aforementioned challenges, the proposed study presents a twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm to improve the seamless transition performance of VSG from IM to GCM and vice versa. In the first step, the VSG-based power system model is used as a foundation for problem formulation of the proposed TD3 algorithm. Secondly, a reward function is designed according to the performance requirements, i.e., frequency and RoCoF requirements, of the VSG in order to guide the training of the agent in varying load, power reference, and grid conditions. Finally, the superiority of the proposed algorithm over existing methods is validated in MATLAB/SIMULINK and RTDS based real-time simulation environment. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Solving Overlapping Coalition Structure Generation in Task-Based Settings

The overlapping coalition structure generation problem (OCSGP) is a challenging computational problem in multi-agent systems. It focuses on selecting possibly overlapping coalitions from a set of agents to maximize the social welfare of all coalitions while containing all agents. However, in practical applications, coalitions may be formed to selectively respond to tasks from a pool of potential tasks assigned to agents. Consequently, this study considers OCSGP in a task-based setting, where each agent has finite resources and can only respond to tasks of interest, and each coalition can only take on mutually disjoint subsets of tasks. Specifically, we first present a model of the task-based OCSGP and investigate its computational complexity. Our theoretical results demonstrate that this specific OCSGP remains intractable even under restrictive assumptions. Subsequently, we develop a generic evolutionary algorithm framework (EAF) to find an approximately optimal overlapping coalition structure (OCS) in time quartic polynomial in the size of the instance. Particularly, we devise a specific solution-repair based heuristic of cubic time complexity to generate a feasible OCS. Finally, we compare the proposed EAF with a task-oriented heuristic and a hybrid algorithm for OCSGP, and examine its applicability in the pursuit-evasion problem. The experimental results reveal that the proposed EAF exhibits superior performance in finding feasible OCSs and demonstrates flexible adaptability to problem size and resource status. ©2025 The Authors.

In the field of heterogeneous federated learning (FL), the key challenge is to efficiently and collaboratively train models across multiple clients with different data distributions, model structures, task objectives, computational capabilities, and communication resources. This diversity leads to significant heterogeneity, which increases the complexity of model training. In this paper, we first outline the basic concepts of heterogeneous FL and summarize the research challenges in FL in terms of five aspects: data, model, task, device and communication. In addition, we explore how existing state-of-the-art approaches cope with the heterogeneity of FL, and categorize and review these approaches at three different levels: data-level, model-level, and architecture-level. Subsequently, the paper extensively discusses privacy-preserving strategies in heterogeneous FL environments. Finally, the paper discusses current open issues and directions for future research, aiming to promote the further development of heterogeneous FL. © 2015 IEEE.

Attention-Driven Emotion Recognition in EEG: A Transformer-Based Approach With Cross-Dataset Fine-Tuning

Emotion recognition from EEG (electroencephalogram) signals is crucial in mental health diagnostics and human-computer interaction but is often hindered by high dimensionality, noise, and complex temporal dependencies in the data. This paper presents a novel approach that integrates transformer models, attention mechanisms, and transfer learning to enhance emotion recognition accuracy from EEG signals. The proposed methodology consists of two phases: Attention Enhanced Base Model Development (AE-BMD) and Cross-Dataset Fine Tuning Adaptation (CD-FTA). In the AE-BMD phase, the base model is developed and trained on the SEED-IV dataset (15 participants, 62 EEG channels), achieving an accuracy of 84%, with an average precision of 84.75%, recall of 84% and F1-score of 84%. This phase employs optimized feature extraction from key EEG frequency bands (Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, Gamma) using techniques such as MFCC, GFCC, power spectral density, and Hjorth parameters. A transformer encoder with integrated spectral and temporal attention mechanisms captures intricate patterns and long-range dependencies within the EEG signals. In the CD-FTA phase, the model undergoes fine-tuning on the SEED-V dataset (20 participants, 62 channels) leading to an improved accuracy of 90%, with an average precision of 90.6%, recall of 90.6%, and F1-score of 90.6%. The model’s generalization is further validated on the MPED dataset (23 participants, 62 channels, seven emotion classes), achieving 79%, with an average precision of 79.3%, recall of 79.3% and F1-score of 79.1% across diverse emotional states. This cross-dataset adaptation leverages transfer learning to enhance the model’s generalization across different emotional states and EEG datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms traditional methods, achieving superior accuracy and robustness in emotion recognition tasks.
