The accurate prediction of biological age can bring important benefits in promoting therapeutic and behavioural strategies for healthy aging. We propose the development of age prediction models using multi-modal datasets, including transcriptomics, methylation and histological images from lung tissue samples of 793 human donors. From a technical point of view this is a challenging problem since not all donors are covered by the same data modalities and the datasets have a very high feature dimensionality with a relatively smaller number of samples. To fairly compare performance across different data types, we’ve created a test set including donors represented in each modality. Given the unique characteristics of the data distribution, we developed gradient boosting tree and convolutional neural network models for each dataset. The performance of the models can be affected by several covariates, including smoking history, and, most importantly, by a skewed distribution of age. Data-centric approaches, including feature engineering, feature selection, data stratification and resampling, proved fundamental in building models that were optimally adapted for each data modality, resulting in significant improvements in model performance for imbalanced regression. The models were then applied to the test set independently, and later combined into a multi-modal ensemble through a voting strategy, predicting age with a median absolute error of 4 years. Even if prediction accuracy remains a challenge, in this work we provide insights to address the difficulties of multi-modal data integration and imbalanced data prediction. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The Fortran programming language is widely utilized in numerical computation and scientific computing. Fortran programs are prone to potential runtime errors related to numerical properties due to the large number of numerical operations. In this paper, we present F-IKOS, an abstract interpretation-based static analyzer for Fortran programs on top of IKOS, which soundly handles floating-point types in Fortran programs. Firstly, we translate Fortran programs to LLVM IR using compiler front-end Flang. After that, we extend IKOS to support sound floating-point analysis and then employ it to analyze the translated LLVM IR. Particularly, when analyzing floating-point types in programs, we first abstract floating-point expressions into real-number expressions with interval coefficients, and then linearize these expressions into real-number expressions with scalar coefficients. These linear expressions are subsequently handled by abstract domains originally designed for real-number types to produce sound analysis results. We have conducted experiments on representative Fortran programs to show the efficiency and effectiveness of F-IKOS. The experimental results are encouraging: F-IKOS soundly analyzes runtime errors in complex programs, outperforming other analyzers. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors. Designing neural network architecture for embedded devices is practical but challenging because the models are expected to be not only accurate but also enough lightweight and robust. However, it is challenging to balance those trade-offs manually because of the large search space. To solve this problem, we propose an Effective, Efficient, and Robust Neural Architecture Search (E2RNAS) method to automatically search a neural network architecture that balances the performance, robustness, and resource consumption. Unlike previous studies, the objective function of the proposed E2RNAS method is formulated as a multi-objective bi-level optimization problem with the upper-level subproblem as a multi-objective optimization problem that considers the performance, robustness, and resource consumption. To solve the proposed objective function, we integrate the multiple-gradient descent algorithm, a widely studied gradient-based multi-objective optimization algorithm, with the bi-level optimization. Experiments on benchmark datasets show that the proposed E2RNAS method can find robust architecture with low resource consumption and comparable classification accuracy. © 2022 IEEE.

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks have the potential to provide low-latency communication with global coverage. To unleash this potential, it is crucial to achieve efficient data delivery. In this paper, we analyze the topology characteristics of LEO satellite networks, and propose a source-route-style forwarding framework. Specifically, we leverage the deterministic neighbor relationship and identify all the unidirectional inter-satellite links (ISLs). Moreover, our framework utilizes the in-packet bloom filter (BF) to store the source-route-style forwarding information. This way, the source satellite could encode multiple ISL identifiers into the BF, which actually specifies the forwarding path. The intermediate satellites only need to check whether the outgoing ISLs are encoded and forward packets accordingly. Due to false positives caused by BF, the more ISLs are encoded at a time, the more redundant forwardings emerge. To reduce forwarding overhead, we take into account segment encoding, allowing the source and intermediate satellites to encode part of ISLs towards the destination. Overall, segment encoding seeks the right balance between forwarding overhead and encoding delay. We characterize a wide range of segment encoding policy in a unified framework, and derive the expected forwarding overhead in a closed-form. The segment encoding design is formulated as a binary non-linear programming, which is NP-hard. To overcome the challenge, we leverage its decomposable structure, and propose an efficient algorithm to solve it optimally. Finally, we validate our analytical results via packet-level experiments. Results also show that our proposed segment encoding policy significantly reduces the queuing delay compared to source encoding. © 2023 IFIP.

Bonding and antibonding electromagnetic coupling in two interacting toroidal metamolecules

The existence of a toroidal-like eigenmode and its electromagnetic coupling in a system of dielectric particles are studied. A constituent structure (metamolecule) is made of a ring consisting of the radial arrangement of several vertically standing dielectric disks (meta-atoms). In the eigenstate of the given metamolecule, the second-order term related to the exact electric dipole in the multipole decomposition is much greater than the first-order term. This eigenstate is defined as a toroidal-like mode. Then, the characteristics of a system (metamacromolecule) composed of two identical rings are studied in both eigen- and excited states to reveal the peculiarities of the toroidal-like mode coupling. Similar to the well-known electric dipole-dipole and magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, the interaction of toroidal-like modes also appears in symmetric (bonding) and antisymmetric (antibonding) forms. Their excitation in the metamacromolecule depends on the propagation direction and polarization of the irradiating wave. The manifestation of toroidal-like mode coupling is confirmed by checking the extinction cross section and near-field distributions obtained from the full-wave numerical simulation and microwave experiment. A clear understanding of the nature of toroidicity is important from the fundamental physics perspective and practical implementation of metamaterials operated in such exotic states.

With the development of millimeter-wave(mmWave)communication systems,large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surfaces(RISs)have gained considerable attention as a promising technology for signal strength enhancement and coverage ***,as the antenna scale and bandwidth increase,RIS-assisted wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM)communication systems face challenges due to the near-field range expansion and the beam split effect over the high-frequency band,complicating the acquisition of channel state information(CSI).To tackle these challenges,we present a codebook-based three-stage beam training scheme by using the beam split effect to bypass CSI ***,by analyzing the beam split effect in RIS-assisted OFDM communication systems,we propose a beam-split-aware codebook capable of covering both the near and far fields with fewer codewords compared to conventional narrow-band *** such a codebook,a three-stage beam training mechanism is adopted to obtain the optimal codeword with low time overhead,thereby facilitating subsequent *** results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms existing near-and far-field codebook-based schemes in terms of the beam training resolution and sum rate in the hybrid near–far field.

This paper investigates the covert communication in a satellite-terrestrial system, including a satellite transmitter Alice, a terrestrial full-duplex receiver Bob and a terrestrial warden Willie. To help the covert transmission from Alice, the full-duplex Bob transmits the jamming signal to confuse Willie and also receives the signal from Alice simultaneously. To explore the fundamental covertness in such a system, we first provide theoretical modelings for satellite-terrestrial downlink, and the detection error probability of Willie. Based on these models, we then study the transmit power optimization for covert rate maximization. Finally, we present extensive numerical results to validate our theoretical analysis and to illustrate the impact of various system parameters on the maximum covert rate. © 2024 IEEE.
