Accurate and cost-effective state estimation is needed to reach self-driving. The well-known GNSS and IMU fusion can be improved by the integration of wheel odometry. The robustness of this type of odometry is increased if both the rear and front wheels are utilized. Furthermore, the method is cost-effective, but for accurate motion estimation, the vehicle model parameters have to be calibrated. This paper presents the whole calibration task, such as input estimation, filtering of reference outputs, and parameter identification. The proposed estimation method is a unique version of the Gauss-Newton method, to mitigate the distortion effect of pose initialization. The effectiveness of the proposed calibration process is illustrated through vehicle test experiments. The validation demonstrates that the calibration results in below than 1% relative estimation error, thus the front-odometry can be integrated into the state estimation layer of a self-driving vehicle. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A set of event-based supervisors is developed to control the maintenance process of a printing machine. The Discrete Event System descriptions of the distinct tasks of the maintenance process are in the form of Finite State Machines. The desired behavior is expressed as four behavioral rules. The rules are translated to regular languages realized by appropriate supervisor automaton. The supervisor's physical realizability is proved and the blocking avoidance of the controlled printing machine is satisfied. © 2024 IEEE.

Domain-specific data characteristics: A study on meaning of stylometric sub-concepts and in-class imbalance

In the context of data imbalance probably the most investigated problem is imbalance of classes, as learning from the data with this characteristic makes detection of existing patterns for all classes more difficult. However, other problems related to imbalance also exists and the paper addresses such cases where classes are balanced, but there is in-class imbalance. Such imbalance can be caused by uneven representation of sub-concepts. When there is a noticeable difference between the numbers of samples belonging to sub-concepts, this can turn the under-represented sub-concepts into disjuncts. Data irregularities of this type can hinder recognition, therefore actions are typically taken to restore balance. In the investigations described, the issue was studied in the stylometric domain and various classifiers were applied to the data that was balanced, then imbalanced, and finally with restored balance. The experiments show that the specifics of the domain of application can put its own mark on the data which is difficult to overcome by standard processing such as under- or oversampling. Observed dependence on a learner and dataset makes the issue even more complex and layered, and shows the need for deeper studies.

The paper presents research dedicated to observations of relations between attribute properties and discretisation. In the investigations described, the gradually increasing sets of features were discretised by selected approaches, and several variants of data were constructed. The continuous, partially discrete, and completely translated datasets were explored by the chosen classifiers and their performance studied in the context of a number of discretised attributes, discretisation procedures, and the way of processing of features and datasets. The stylometric problem of authorship attribution was the machine learning task under study. The experimental results enable to observe closer the specificity of style-markers employed as characteristic features, and indicate conditions for efficient recognition of authorship. They can be extended to other application domains with similar characteristics.

Distributed Nash equilibrium for pursuit-evasion game with one evader and multiple pursuers

This paper investigates the pursuit-evasion problem involving one evader and multiple pursuers with limited sensing capability, where the evader tries to maximize the distance with the pursuers, while the pursuers have different objectives based on whether they can receive the information of the evader. The subgroup of pursuers who can observe the evader(called leaders) tries to be close to the evader, and the other subgroup of pursuers(called followers) tries to synchronize with their neighbors. When the subgraph formed by all leaders is complete, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee that the pursuers capture the evader and the pursuit-evasion game composed of the evader and leaders reaches Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, for the incomplete subgraph case, the distributed observers are proposed to estimate the relative positions between the evader and all leaders. It is shown that the distributed control strategy based on the observers converges exponentially to the Nash equilibrium solution, and makes the pursuers capture the evader. Finally, simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.

With the increasing emphasis on embedding advanced technology into system controls, the Direct Power control (DPC) approach has garnered considerable attention due to its simple and highly adaptable algorithm. This approach has been increasingly recognized in numerous applications. However, the variable frequency, harmonic distortion of the currents, and power ripples caused by Hysteresis controllers and switching tables decrease its effectiveness and robustness, affecting the system's performance. For this reason, this paper proposed a new DPC based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approaches. In this approach, the hysteresis comparator and the switching table are substituted with ANN controllers and then applied on both sides: machine-side converter (MSC) and grid-side converter (GSC) of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator based Wind Energy Conversion System (PMSG-WECS). Moreover, to make the system more efficient in varying wind conditions, this study expands the utilization of the artificial neural networks (ANN) to encompass the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategy. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on the system behaviors, a simulation test was carried out in the Matlab/Simulink environment, using a real wind profile of a Moroccan city (Essaouira). In comparison to the classical DPC control, the simulation results showed the superior performance of the proposed ANN-DPC control in terms of reference tracking, response time, overshoot, precision, and its capacity to reduce the rate of power ripples and total harmonic distortion (THD) in the injected currents. Furthermore, a robustness test was also included in this work to check the robustness of the proposed control against parameters variation. In conclusion, the feasibility and effectiveness of the ANN-DPC control approach were confirmed through experimental validation using the dSPACE DS1104 board. © 2024 The Authors

On the reduction of Linear Parameter-Varying State-Space models

This paper presents an overview and comparative study of the state of the art in state-order reduction (SOR) and scheduling dimension reduction (SDR) for linear parameter-varying (LPV) state-space (SS) models, comparing and benchmarking their capabilities, limitations and performance. The use case chosen for these studies is an interconnected network of nonlinear coupled mass spring damper systems with three different configurations, where some spring coefficients are described by arbitrary user-defined static nonlinear functions. For SOR, the following methods are compared: linear time-invariant (LTI), LPV and LFR-based balanced reductions, moment matching (MM) and parameter-varying oblique projection. For SDR, the following methods are compared: principal component analysis (PCA), trajectory PCA, Kernel PCA and LTI balanced truncation, autoencoders and deep neural network. The comparison reveals the most suitable reduction methods for the different benchmark configurations, from which we provide use case SOR and SDR guidelines that can be used to choose the best reduction method for a given LPV-SS model. © 2024, CC BY.

"Artificial lung" is a device that simulates breathing process of occupants in a room. This allows you to safely test, e.g., the impact of HVAC systems on the spread of pathogens. The paper describes the concept of the device, its construction and performed tests. The project was implemented by students of two faculties: automatic control, Electronics and computer science, and Energy and Environmental Engineering. Weighted vertex cover(WVC)is one of the most important combinatorial optimization *** this paper,we provide a new game optimization to achieve efficiency and time of solutions for the WVC problem of weighted *** first model the WVC problem as a general game on weighted *** the framework of a game,we newly define several cover states to describe the WVC ***,we reveal the relationship among these cover states of the weighted network and the strict Nash equilibriums(SNEs)of the ***,we propose a game-based asynchronous algorithm(GAA),which can theoretically guarantee that all cover states of vertices converging in an SNE with polynomial ***,we improve the GAA by adding 2-hop and 3-hop adjustment mechanisms,termed the improved game-based asynchronous algorithm(IGAA),in which we prove that it can obtain a better solution to the WVC problem than using a the ***,numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed IGAA can obtain a better approximate solution in promising computation time compared with the existing representative algorithms.

Learning-based model augmentation with LFRs

Nonlinear system identification (NL-SI) has proven to be effective in obtaining accurate models for highly complex systems. Especially, recent encoder-based methods for artificial neural networks state-space (ANN-SS) models have achieved state-of-the-art performance on various benchmarks, while offering consistency and computational efficiency. The inclusion of prior knowledge of the system can be exploited to increase (i) estimation speed, (ii) accuracy, and (iii) interpretability of the resulting models. This paper proposes an encoder based model augmentation method incorporating prior knowledge from first-principles (FP) models. We introduce a novel linear-fractional-representation (LFR) model structure that allows for the unified representation of various augmentation structures including the ones that are commonly used in the literature, and an identification algorithm for estimating the proposed structure together with appropriate initialization methods. The performance and generalization capabilities of the proposed method are demonstrated on a hardening mass-spring-damper simulation. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.
