Availability of large full-text document collections in electronic form has created a need for tools and techniques that assist users in organizing these collections. Document clustering is one of the popular methods used for this purpose. In this paper, we propose the neural network based document clustering method by using a hierarchically organized network built up from independent Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural networks. We present clustering results using the REUTERS corpus and show an improvement in clustering performance using both entropy and F-measure as evaluation measures.

New developments in computer networks and communications provide new possibilities for control purposes. controlsystems for highly complex plants are themselves very complex and heterogeneous. A new software infrastructure is needed that exploits these new emerging software technologies. An essential activity to be pursued is that of education and of including new technology in control education. The aim of this paper is to describe some of our activities and experiences in teaching of information techniques and technologies included in open control platforms of complex controlsystems.

The zero dynamics of simple continuous and fed-batch biore-actors is investigated in this paper for different input and output selections. A function λ generating the necessary coordinates transformation has been determined analytically for each case solving a simple PDE, and the resulting coordinates transformations have found to be invertible on the physically meaningful operating region. It is shown that that the investigated continuous and fed-batch bioreactors are globally minimum phase systems with the examined reaction rate function if the manipulable input is the inlet feed flow rate and the output is the substrate concentration. It is also shown that the zero dynamics may have multiple (locally stable and unstable) equilibria if the input is the inlet feed flow rate and the output is the biomass concentration.

Repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D systems (i.e. information propagation in two independent directions) of both systems theoretic and applications interest. They cannot be controlled by direct extension of existing techniques from either standard (termed 1D here) or 2D systems theory. Here we give new results on the relatively open problem of the design of physically based control laws using an H/sub /spl infin// setting. These results are for the sub-class of so-called discrete linear repetitive processes which arise in applications areas such as iterative learning control.

This paper is concerned with an application study of model-based fault detection method to a ship propulsion system. When modeling the object system, Quasi-ARMAX model with multi-model form is used. In this model, the system non-linearity is incorporated into model parameters by using non-linear non-parametric models (NNMs). Kullback discrimination Information (KDI) is introduced as fault detection index to evaluate the distortion in identified model, which is caused by a fault. The effectiveness of the method is verified through simulation studies on the ship propulsion system.

Repetitive processes are a distinct class of 2D systems of both systems theoretic and applications interest. They cannot be controlled by direct extension of existing techniques from either standard or 2D systems theory. Here we give new results on the design of physically based feedback control laws. These results relate to design for performance and are illustrated on data for a model which arises in the modelling of a physical process.

This paper addresses the problem of time-varying communication delay in force reflecting bilateral teleoperation. The problem is motivated by the increasing use of the Internet as a communication medium where the time delay is variable depending on factors such as congestion, bandwidth, or distance. The well-known scattering formalism introduced in [1] preserves passivity of the communication channel in general only for constant transmission delay. We demonstrate how to recover both passivity and tracking performance using a modified control architecture that incorporates time-varying gains into the scattering transformation and feedforward position control. Experimental results using a single-degree of freedom master/slave system are presented.

In this paper, we study the stability and the stabilisation of 2D discrete linear systems with multiple state delays. All of the new results obtained are based on analysis of the Fornasini-Marchesini state space model with delays and the resulting conditions are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the overall approach.
