In this paper, the selection of H/sub /spl infin// weighting functions for general practical applications is investigated. Uncertainty weighting functions for typical low-order plants with parametric uncertainties are derived. It is shown that H/sub /spl infin// weighting function for a general SISO plant can be obtained by the combination of these elementary low-order plants. Weighting functions of reflecting other system specifications in H/sub /spl infin// design are also investigated. Explicit weighting function expressions are given to address position and rate limits of an actuator, tracking error performance, overshoot, etc. Finally, the proposed methods are demonstrated by the roll-angle control design of a laboratory-scale model of a vertical take-off aircraft via simulation and real-time control.

Describes a visual control scheme for outdoor navigation of an autonomous mobile robot. The involved control system includes the fuzzy approach at two levels. A fuzzy perception system which detects efficiently the road edges from the perception-domain image, and a fuzzy control system which uses the knowledge-base information and the scene model to control the robot motion. On the other hand, the fuzzy control system is finely tuned through feedback of mean square errors between the scene model parameters and the knowledge-base data. Hence, a road configuration from a preprocessed image is compared with a fuzzy template made from the fuzzy membership function based on the knowledge-base module. Finally, the fuzzy controller uses results of these calculations to home the robot on the planned path. The paper shows the principle of this system and the simulation results confirming the feasibility of the approach.

Diop et al. previously (1994) proposed a general observer design methodology based upon numerical differentiation and the interpretation of observability of a system as the solvability of the system's dynamical equations for the state vector in terms of a finite number of derivatives of the output and input. Numerical differentiation-base observers are alternatives to asymptotic observers for nonlinear systems. Various techniques are known to be efficient for the estimation of the few first derivatives from data with low frequency content, such as polynomial- and spline-based least squares, and averaged central differences. The main advantages of such observers are intuitiveness, flexibility and speed. However, as is the case of many inverse problems, differentiation is an ill-posed operator. This communication proposes the use of regularization to partially overcome the noise sensitivity that is inherent in the standard numerical differentiation. Regularization of numerical derivatives from experimental data consists of two operations: filtering and differentiation. Mollification is a method of filter design that is fairly well amenable to a mathematical analysis, including computation of estimation error bounds. In this method experimental data is projected onto Sobolev spaces of signals with less high frequency content, which may then be differentiated stably. The filters in question are infinite dimensional. They can be implemented approximately by means of digital Fourier transformation on finite moving windows of the data.

The existence and stability properties of periodic orbits are studied for nonlinear systems with impulse effects. This is achieved with an extension of the well-known method of Poincare. The main result is then applied to a model of an under actuated, five degree of freedom biped robot with a torso in order to prove, for the first time, the existence of an asymptotically stable walking cycle.

Embedded systems are computer-based systems which must respond to external stimuli within time scales determined by the external environment. Such systems are required to achieve ever more demanding behavioural. performance and safety requirements. Embedded systems are found in applications such as primary flight control, gas-turbine engine control and railway traffic management Often complex embedded systems are distributed, typically to achieve demanding performance or dependability requirements, and must operate within hard real-time constraints. Considerable effort is required to select optimal design solutions and ensure adherence to specified requirements. In embedded systems safety, reliability and response-times are considered as strict constraints on the system design. Achievement of these constraints requires meticulous analysis, typically through the use of specialist modelling and simulation techniques. Integration of knowledge and understanding obtained from disparate detailed models remains a considerable challenge. Ideally, a system which has both continuous dynamics and event-driven parts. would be modelled in one environment, using the most appropriate techniques for each part, and allowing the analysis of the whole system to be carried out simultaneously. The paper presents an integrated approach in order to translate automatically the information manipulated during the different phases of the design: specification. analysis, design and implementation.

He was previously a Senior Engineer with San Diego Gas & Electric with responsibility for its energy application and lighting programs. Prior to joining SDG&E Mr. Leite was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy where he served in operations and engineering assignments. Following active duty he accepted a Naval Reserve commission and has retired with the rank of Captain. His assignments included command operational and engineering tours. Mr. Leite has also served as an expert witness in admiralty and engineering matters. He is a gradate of the University of California Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from National University in San Diego. Mr. Leite is a Registered Professional Engineer in the States of California and Minnesota. Mr. Leite is a member of ASNE ASCE MORS the Illuminating Engineering Society and the U.S. Naval institute. Dennis Roy Mensh:is a Senior Engineer with PRC Inc. a division of Litton Industries in Crystal City VA where he supports modeling and simulation tasking for combat systems. He received BS and MS degrees in applied Physics from Lopola College in Baltimore MD and the American University in Washington DC. He has also completed the course work towards a Ph.D. degree in computer science specializing in the fields of Operations Reseurch Anabsis Systems Analysis and Computer Modeling and Simulation. Previously he was employed at the White Oak Laboratory of the Naval Surface Warfare Carter in Silver Spring MD where he worked in the areas of naval sensor and weapon system analysis

This paper defines, develops and examines a set of generic analysis tools that can be applied to Models and Simulations at the systems Engineering level of fidelity. The tools examine the performance and effectiveness of Sensors;Weapons;and Battle Management, Command, control, Communications, computers, and Intelligence ((BMCI)-I-4) systems and equipment. The Measures of Performance (MOPs), Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) and Measures of Force Effectiveness (MOFEs) were extracted from the Modular Command and control Structure Paradigm which was developed at the Naval Postgraduate School. The paradigm provides for the development of evaluation criteria (MOPs, MOEs, and MOFEs) in a framework that ensures the traceability of system performance and effectiveness to the system operational requirements as specified in the Operational Requirements Document (ORD). Also, the analysis tools provide insight and valid estimates of numerical measures of the defined system functionality threads, which represent the system's operational requirements as specified in the ORD. The tools are directly transferrable and applicable to test and evaluation exercise events which are conducted in support of the development and acquisition of systems and equipment. Once the levels of system performance have been defined, the Paradigm generates a quantitative database that becomes a useful tool in system tradeoffs and selection. Once the alternative system suites have been defined, the suites can be analyzed in terms of system functionality threads and their corresponding performance capabilities versus cost.

Simultaneous Fault Detection Of Heat Exchangers

A grey box model-based method for fault diagnosis is proposed in this paper. The method is based on a first principle model of the process unit: a heat exchanger, and on a grey box model of the faults: the deterioration of the heat transfer surface by aging and the leaking of the outer container. The deterioration of the heat transfer surface is due to material settling, and in old heat exchangers pieces of this material can break off and cause damage in the equipment. A recursive least squares estimator with forgetting factor is used to track both the heat transfer coefficients and the cold side volume. The heat transfer coefficients are estimated both from the hot and cold side equations. The settled material breakage fault is detected via detection of abrupt positive jumps in the estimated heat transfer coefficients using a detector based on a cumulative sum (CUSUM) test. The proposed method enables simultaneous detection of the two fault types considered. Fault localization along the equipment length is also possible when temperature measurements are available along the length.

Discrete-time control schemes are often used for realization of positional control strategies for continuous time control problems (Krasovskii and Subbotin, 1974; Osipov, 1971) . However for general systems with delays (whicb are often called functional differential equations (FDE)) exact solutions in both continuous and discrete schemes can be found in exceptional cases. So, as rule, it is necessary to solve corresponding control problems using suitable numerical algorithms . In surveys (Cryer and Tavernini, 1972; Hall and watt, 1976; Bellen, 1985) different numerical methods for FDE are discussed. In this paper positional implicit Runge-Kutta-like numerical methods of solving general FDE are presented. The elaborated methods are direct analogs of the corresponding numerical methods of ODE case. Also we present new theorem (which generalizes the results of (Kim and Pimenov, 1997; Kim and Pimenov, 1998)) on convergence order. The obtained results are based on distinguishing of finite dimensional and infinite dimensional components in the structure of FDE, on interpolation and extrapolation of the discrete prehistory of the model, on application of constructions of i- smooth analysis (Kim, 1996) . The notion of an approximation order for an optimal strategy in the discrete scheme of realization is introduced. The conditions, which guarantee required approximation order of the optimal strategy, are presented.

Fast implementation of the forward positional acceleration of robots via the distributed arithmetic technique

This paper refers to the fast implementation of the positional forward acceleration of the end effector of revolute robotic arms with spherical wrists, using the distributed arithmetic technique. The acceleration of the end effector is calculated by a cascade configuration of two pipelined arrays that calculate the Jacobian matrix and its time derivative, as well as the centrifugal-Coriolis and linear accelerations. These partial accelerations are then added in the adder tree. The building blocks of the arrays are the distributed arithmetic-based circuits that implement the matrix-vector multiplications involved in the calculations. The digit-serial configuration of the proposed implementation of the positional forward acceleration of the end effector is described. The serial and the parallel configurations may result as special cases of the digit-serial configuration. The proposed distributed arithmetic (DA) implementation of the positional forward acceleration may be applied, after appropriate modifications, to the general case of robots having either revolute or prismatic joints, with any type of wrist.
