Virtual machine technology can provide high server utilization and service consolidation on an individual physical machine, and gains acceptance in diverse fields. In a growing number of contexts, many situations require high-performance network virtualization. Paravirtualized network system adopts split driver model, and uses dynamic shared memory mechanism for communication between unprivileged guest domain and isolated driver domain. The dynamic shared memory mechanism introduces extra per-packet overheads, such as additional hypercalls and grant table operations. In this paper, we have implemented a new method called STAMP (static shared memory pipe), which uses static shared memory mechanism on Xen platform. STAMP comprises a two-way lockless producer-consumer circular buffer to carry network packets between split drivers. Once STAMP is established between guest domain and isolated driver domain, all packets are transferred through it to avoid extra overheads introduced by dynamic shared memory mechanism. In our evaluations, STAMP achieves availability and high efficiency, especially for scenarios of small messages. These results make the static shared memory mechanism an attractive solution for network paravirtualization. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a Godson-T Verification Engine (GVE) to rapidly prototype and debug our Godson-T many-core processor design. GVE adopts the state-of-the-art hardware platform which contains 6 Xilinx Virtex-5 LX330 FPGAs, thus permitting us to map our many-core processor and peripheral devices into it. Besides the hardware, our toolkit Godson-T Studio provides the compiler, program loader, debugger and monitor to fulfil the purpose of developing, profiling and debugging, while the accuracy loss problem is settled by our novel techniques: Check-point and ILA-Check, presented in this paper. To our experience, GVE greatly reduces the verification cycle due to its high execution speed, for example, it finishes thousands of testcases in an hour, where the software-based approach takes few days to run. And by the help of the checkpoint framework, we can easily locate the faults. Because of these features, GVE makes a great contribution to the 16-tile Godson-T tape-out Project.

Volume diagnosis plays an important role in the yield learning process. To get a high quality diagnosis result, patterns with high distinguish ability are essential. However, the test patterns used by volume diagnosis commonly have low distinguish ability to specific faults. In our experiments, we observe that on average, under automatic generated test patterns, faults in the same fan out free region (FFR) account for only 6% of all possible fault pairs, but their share in total indistinguishable faults is 70%, faults in different FFRs but with the same observation points account for 4% of all fault pairs, but their share in total indistinguishable faults is 22%. Exploiting this fact that faults in the same FFRs are harder to be distinguished, we propose an Automatic Diagnostic Pattern Generation (ADPG) method named Substantial Fault Pairs at-A-Time (SFPAT)-ADPG. By applying a transformed circuit and a new fault list to an existing Automatic Test Pattern Generation (ATPG) tool, we generate the compressed test patterns which are also the diagnostic patterns with high distinguish ability for the original circuit. Experiments on ISCAS'89 and ITC'99 benchmark circuits show the effectiveness of the proposed SFPAT-ADPG method.

With the rapid development of virtualization technology, virtual machine (VM) is widely used by cloud computing - the more and more popular computing paradigm. Thus, in order to guarantee the security of cloud computing, it is necessary to securely identify the kernel of VM, the software stack running on VM and the hardware platform which VM relies on. This paper designs a system of trusted connection based on virtual machine architecture and implements a system prototype. Our system not only can securely measure and identify the kernel of VM, the software stack running on VM and the hardware platform which VM relies on, but also can realize isolations to untrusted VMs. There are three main parts in our system: trusted chain, attestation and isolation. The experiments described in this paper prove that our system ensures trusted connection of VMs and achieves isolations to untrusted VMs. The performance of our system is also analyzed and evaluated. According to the analysis results, our system is practical in terms of performance.

This paper presents a floating-point fused multiply-add (FMA) unit with low-cost and low power techniques. To improve the performance, two single-precision operations can be performed concurrently with one double-precision datapath, which is very useful in multimedia and even scientific applications. Moreover, to reduce the additional area costs for supporting two single-precision operations in parallel, multiple double-precision units, i.e., the multiplier, shifter and adder, are reused as much as possible. A modified dual-path algorithm is proposed by classifying the exponent difference into three cases and implementing them with close and far paths, which can reduce latency and facilitate lowering power consumption by enabling only one of the two paths. In addition, in case of FADD instructions, the multiplier in the first stage is bypassed and kept in stable mode, which can significantly improve FADD instruction performance and lower power consumption. The overall FMA unit has a latency of 4 cycles while the FADD operation has 3 cycles. Each cycle has a time delay of about 0.66 ns in the ST 65 nm CMOS technology. Compared with the conventional double-precision FMA, about 13% delay is reduced and about 22% area is increased, which is acceptable since two single-precision results can be generated simultaneously.

Thread migration is an effective technique for fault resilience and load balancing in high performance computing. However, flexible thread migration is not easy to achieve. In this paper, we present an approach to creating migratory threads dynamically at application level. The targets must be executable source files. Compared to the static ones, the number of threads created during migration with the new scheme is independent from the context. Various thread cases are considered for migration. Thread state is handled at application level. Variables are saved in structures in C language for speedy state construction. In order to solve the inability of traditional methods in tracking the created threads, a tree of active function calls is used to record the callback. The preprocessor of the proposed one is written in YACC for accuracy and programmability. The migration enabling process is transparent to programmers with the help of the preprocess. The experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach.

Statistical static timing analysis (SSTA) considering process variation and aging effects is usually used to analyze circuit lifetime reliability at design phase. A key challenge for statistical lifetime reliability analysis is that an accurate statistical timing model is needed to carefully model practical variation distribution as well as delay correlation. In this work, P2CLRAF, a circuit lifetime reliability analysis framework is proposed. It calibrates presilicon SSTA result by learning the collected data from path delay testing at post-silicon timing validation phase. A neural network inside P2CLRAF is trained to learn variation distribution and delay correlation based on the statistic of path delay testing. The learned information is then fed back to SSTA to further improve the accuracy of circuit lifetime reliability analysis. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed analysis framework.

Simulation is an important method to evaluate future computer systems. Currently microprocessor architecture has switched to parallel, but almost all simulators remained at sequential stage, and the advantages brought by multi-core or many-core processors cannot be utilized. This paper presents a parallel simulator engine （SimK） towards the prevalent SMP/CMP platform, aiming at large-scale fine-grained computer system simulation. In this paper, highly efficient synchronization, communication and buffer management policies used in SimK are introduced, and a novel lock-free scheduling mechanism that avoids using any atomic instructions is presented. To deal with the load fluctuation at light load case, a cooperated dynamic task migration scheme is proposed. Based on SimK, we have developed large-scale parallel simulators HppSim and HppNetSim, which simulate a full supercomputer system and its interconnection network respectively. Results show that HppSim and HppNetSim both gain sound speedup with multiple processors, and the best normalized speedup reaches 14.95X on a two-way quad-core server.

A cloud computing provider can dynamically allocate virtual machines (VM) based on the needs of the customers, while maintaining the privileged access to the Management Virtual Machine that directly manages the hardware and supports the guest VMs. The customers must trust the cloud providers to protect the confidentiality and integrity of their applications and data. However, as the VMs from different customers are running on the same host, an attack to the management virtual machine will easily lead to the compromise of the guest VMs. Therefore, it is critical for a cloud computing system to ensure the trustworthiness of management VMs. To this end, we propose VMGuard, an integrity monitoring and detecting system for management virtual machines in a distributed environment. VMGuard utilizes a special VM, Guard Domain, which runs on each physical node to monitor the co-resident management VMs. The integrity measurements collected by the Guard Domains are sent to the VMGuard server for safe store and independent analysis. The experimental evaluation of a Xen-based prototype shows that VMGuard can quickly detect the root kit attacks while the performance overhead is low.

Selected Crosstalk Avoidance Code for Reliable Network-on-Chip

With the shrink of the technology into nanometer scale, network-on-chip （NOC） has become a reasonable solution for connecting plenty of IP blocks on a single chip. But it suffers from both crosstalk effects and single event upset （SEU）, especially crosstalk-induced delay, which may constrain the overall performance of NOC. In this paper, we introduce a reliable NOC design using a code with the capability of both crosstalk avoidance and single error correction. Such a code, named selected crosstalk avoidance code （SCAC） in our previous work, joins crosstalk avoidance code （CAC） and error correction code （ECC） together through codeword selection from an original CAC codeword set. It can handle possible error caused by either crosstalk effects or SEU. When designing a reliable NOC, data are encoded to SCAC codewords and can be transmitted rapidly and reliably across NOC. Experimental results show that the NOC design with SCAC achieves higher performance and is reliable to tolerate single errors. Compared with previous crosstalk avoidance methods, SCAC reduces wire overhead, power dissipation and the total delay. When SCAC is used in NOC, it can save 20% area overhead and reduce 49% power dissipation.
