In this paper, we propose a robust visual tracking algorithm based on online learning of a joint sparse dictionary. The joint sparse dictionary consists of positive and negative sub-dictionaries, which model foreground and background objects respectively. An online dictionary learning method is developed to update the joint sparse dictionary by selecting both positive and negative bases from bags of positive and negative image patches/templates during tracking. A linear classifier is trained with sparse coefficients of image patches in the current frame, which are calculated using the joint sparse dictionary. This classifier is then used to locate the target in the next frame. Experimental results show that our tracking method is robust against object variation, occlusion and illumination change. © 2013 SPIE.

When wind farm accepts grid scheduling, target load needs to dispatch to each wind turbine to complete. In order to improve the power control capability of the wind farm in the case of random wind fluctuations, a wind farm power control strategy, based on wind wheel rotation energy storage of variable speed wind turbine, is proposed. Firstly, a wind turbine energy storage assessment model is established, and an energy storage state evaluation method, which considers the balance of wind turbine rotational energy and regulating ability, is proposed. Based on this, a mathematical model of wind farm energy storage optimum is pretended, and a solving strategy based on genetic algorithm is designed, too. Finally, the platform for the implementation of the proposed control strategy is introduced. The control strategy proposed in this paper can effectively enhance the ability of the wind turbines' power control and reduce the impact of the uncertainty wind speed to the power response of the wind farm.

A novel control algorithm for multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) dynamic stochastic systems is developed. The system is expressed by a nonlinear ARMAX model with non-Gaussian noises and random delays. An improved minimum error entropy (MEE) criterion, instead of conventional mean square error, is used to design the adaptive controller. In order to obtain the performance index of the closed-loop control system, the probability density functions (PDFs) of tracking error are estimated by Modha's density estimator, which is implemented by a multi-layer perceptron (MLP). The convergence condition of the proposed control algorithm is analyzed. Finally, a simulation example is given to illustrate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed approach. © 2013 ISSN 1881-803X.

Pathogen incidence rate prediction, which can be considered as time series modeling, is an important task for infectious disease incidence rate prediction and for public health. This paper investigates the application of a genetic computation technique, namely GEP, for pathogen incidence rate prediction. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional sliding windows in GEP-based time series modeling, the paper introduces the problem of mining effective sliding window, for discovering optimal sliding windows for building accurate prediction models. To utilize the periodical characteristic of pathogen incidence rates, a multi-segment sliding window consisting of several segments from different periodical intervals is proposed and used. Since the number of such candidate windows is still very large, a heuristic method is designed for enumerating the candidate effective multi-segment sliding windows. Moreover, methods to find the optimal sliding window and then produce a mathematical model based on that window are proposed. A performance study on real-world datasets shows that the techniques are effective and efficient for pathogen incidence rate prediction. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The control and management problem for large-scale complex urban traffic network is not yet successfully addressed. There are still many difficulties in controlling such large systems, e.g. complexity, high dimension, multiple control objectives, and uncertainties. In the paper, a multi-level MPC hierarchy is proposed to address these difficulties for the control of large-scale urban traffic networks. Under the control hierarchy, a multi-level MPC algorithm is proposed, which includes three levels, the demand balance MPC, the subnetwork MPC, and the intersection controller from top to bottom. A case study is carried out to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the multi-level controller.

Switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives have gained many attentions from researcher which will be used for automotive applications that needs high speed, wider range of constant power capability, ruggedness, and fault tolerance. This paper focuses on modelling and simulation of switched reluctance motor (SRM) based on COMSOL software, two dimensional finite element models of SRM were developed and established. The results show that the models established, are propitious to the accurate analysis of switched reluctance motor torque and flux. SRM 6/4 configuration was selected due to its simple structure and low cost of electronics required for the controller. The model developed will be used to design and build an EV SRM for prototype testing.

This paper investigates variation of infinite horizon (IH) performance of Model Predictive control (MPC) without constraints as the optimization horizon changes. By exploring properties of the Difference Riccati Equations (DRE), an upper bound and a lower bound of the ratio between variation of IH performance of MPC and finite horizon (FH) optimal cost are obtained. The result shows the dynamic behavior of IH performance of closed-loop MPC systems as the optimization horizon varies. Copyright © 2013 IFAC.

This paper deals with human action classification by utilizing spatio-temporal (ST) co-occurrences between labels of video-words that are stored within ST correlo-grams. Mutual information based clustering method is employed to reduce the size of the vocabulary created from local descriptors. Multiple characterizations for human actions in videos are extracted from the correl-ograms that are used for human action classification. These include a highly discriminative co-occurrence vector and a Haralick texture vector. The proposed method is implemented using a SVM classification technique. For evaluation purposes, the KTH and UCF Sports action recognition datasets, are used as they are the most well known and challenging datasets. The proposed method succeed in classifying different action classes, and improves the classification rate obtained by standard bag-of-video-words approach. © 2013;MVA Organization. This paper investigates the full-state feedback lineaxization and backstepping control design problems for a class of nonlinear Markovian jump *** to the proposed relative degree set definition,the system can be transformed into the canonical form through the appropriate coordinate changes following with the Markovian switchings,i.e.,the system can be full-state feedback linearized in every jnmp mode with respect to the relative degree set {n,...,n}.Then,a stabilizing control is designed through applying the backstepping technique,which guarantees the asymptotically stability of nonlinear Markovian jump systems.
