Climate is rapidly changing around the world. Over time, there have been significant changes in the weather. Rainfall is now erratic due to climate change. The frequency of extreme weather events like droughts and floods has increased due to climate change, necessitating the need for more precise and timely rainfall forecasts. For strategic reasons including agriculture, water resource management, and architectural design, rain forecasting is crucial. The naturally occurring non-stationary component in the rainfall time series impairs model performance for practical hydrologists and drought risk assessors. We present a rain predicting model based on machine learning to address the forecasting issue. In our work, we predict the possibility of rain the next day on the basis of last 10 years' data. The variables that were calculated during the experiments were humidity, pressure, evaporation, sunshine, rainfall, and so on. Random Forest gave the 90% accuracy with 0.904 Area under Curve, highest out of all the algorithms. The model's performance will significantly aid in the rain forecast. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper addresses the problem of deploying complex systems in Kubernetes clusters. It discusses using the OperatorSDK framework supported by RedHat as a basis for implementing the Kubernetes operator for Lightweight MultiAccess Edge Computing Platform Simulator (LWMECPS) deployment. Special attention is given to the operator Kubernetes architecture and how to use Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM) to continuously deploy LWMECPS and machine learning models for it. © 2025 IEEE.

As distributed learning applications like Federated Learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Edge Computing expand, addressing their limitations becomes crucial. We approach decentralized learning across a network of communicating clients or nodes, focusing on two primary challenges: data heterogeneity and adversarial robustness. To address these, we introduce a decentralized minimax optimization method incorporating two key components: local updates and gradient tracking. Minimax optimization serves as a fundamental tool for adversarial training, ensuring robustness. Local updates are vital in Federated Learning (FL) to alleviate the communication bottleneck, while gradient tracking is necessary to demonstrate convergence amid data heterogeneity. Our analysis of the proposed algorithm, Dec-Fed Track, in nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization demonstrates its convergence to a stationary point. Additionally, numerical experiments support our theoretical results. © 2024 IEEE.

With the proliferation of data-intensive industrial applications, the collaboration of computing powers among standalone edge servers is vital to provision such services for smart devices. In this paper, we propose an edge-driven industrial computing power network (CPN) by orchestrating the computing and network resources of edge servers through the centralized resource scheduling and decentralized task computing. However, efficient task offloading and collaborative processing is challenging, which requires higher degrees of network automation and intelligence. Therefore, we incorporate digital twins (DTs) into the edge-driven CPN architecture, where the DTs are created as the digital replicas to assist both the computation offloading and collaborative processing. A joint optimization problem of the computing power assignment, service association, task partition, and transmit power control is formulated for maximizing the system average weighted utility. Due to the temporal-spatial variability of tasks and the resulted dynamic environment, we transform the original problem as a Markov decision process aiming at maximizing the long-term average weighted utility. To efficiently handle the high-dimensional discrete-continuous action space, a hybrid soft actor-critic based deep reinforcement learning algorithm is developed for optimizing the joint design. Simulation results validate the superiority of our proposed algorithm over the benchmarks, showing the significant gains obtained by integrating DTs into the edge-driven CPN. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Facial Action Unit (AU) detection is a crucial task in affective computing and social robotics as it helps to identify emotions expressed through facial expressions. Anatomically, there are innumerable correlations between AUs, which contain rich information and are vital for AU detection. Previous methods used fixed AU correlations based on expert experience or statistical rules on specific benchmarks, but it is challenging to comprehensively reflect complex correlations between AUs via hand-crafted settings. There are alternative methods that employ a fully connected graph to learn these dependencies exhaustively. However, these approaches can result in a computational explosion and high dependency with a large dataset. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel self-adjusting AU-correlation learning (SACL) method with less computation for AU detection. This method adaptively learns and updates AU correlation graphs by efficiently leveraging the characteristics of different levels of AU motion and emotion representation information extracted in different stages of the network. Moreover, this paper explores the role of multi-scale learning in correlation information extraction, and design a simple yet effective multi-scale feature learning (MSFL) method to promote better performance in AU detection. By integrating AU correlation information with multi-scale features, the proposed method obtains a more robust feature representation for the final AU detection. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on widely used AU detection benchmark datasets, with only 28.7% and 12.0% of the parameters and FLOPs of the best method, respectively. The majority of businesses have made public appearances on various social media platforms as a result of recent advances in e-commerce and the popularity of social media websites. Customers can share their experiences in the form of online customer reviews, which can assist potential customers in determining the quality of a company and making purchasing decisions. Due to the large volume of published reviews, it becomes difficult for customers to read all of the reviews and assess the quality of the business, resulting in the problem of information overload. Several solutions have been proposed in the literature by researchers using statistical and machine learning techniques to predict the helpfulness of online customer reviews. However, most of the existing solutions are based on the use of various business, review, and reviewer features, which lead to generalizability issues. Moreover, very limited studies have examined the effectiveness of state-of-the-art pre-trained language models for the classification of helpful and unhelpful reviews. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of XLNet, Albert, DistilBert, and Roberta for review helpfulness prediction using textual features. The models were fine-tuned using a publicly available dataset of Yelp reviews. The results showed that XLNet achieved the highest F1-score of 0.730 compared to a benchmark of 0.717 achieved by the BERT base model. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Biometric technologies have been widely adopted in various commercial products, ranging from security systems to personal devices, due to their exceptional reliability and user-friendliness. Among these, palmprint biometrics has gained increasing attention for its advantages, such as ease of use, a larger surface area, and the ability to capture more features compared to other biometric methods. A typical palmprint biometric system involves five key stages: (a) Image Acquisition, (b) Hand Segmentation, (c) Pattern Generation, (d) Feature Extraction, and (e) Verification/Identification. The overall success of the system depends on the effectiveness of each stage, with hand segmentation being crucial for identifying the most relevant features for accurate verification. This study aims to achieve high-accuracy biometric recognition by segmenting hands from images captured in uncontrolled environments with complex backgrounds. Accuracy (ACC), Intersection over Union (IoU), F1-Score, and Dice Coefficient are the four critical metrics used to assess the performance of segmentation techniques. The findings demonstrate that the U-Net + ViT and MA-Net + ResNet34 techniques outperform traditional auto-encoder methods in both quantitative performance metrics and visual analysis, leading to significantly improved hand segmentation for biometric systems. © 2024 IEEE.

The nonnegative matrix factorization algorithm is an effective data dimensionality reduction method. The principle is to convert the image into a nonnegative linear combination of low dimensional basis images. Nonnegative matrix factorization can be divided into linear algorithm and nonlinear algorithm. Because of different decomposition theory, linear NMF algorithms mainly extract first-order features of data, while nonlinear NMF algorithms mainly extract high-order features. Most of the current studies only focus on one of the models without combining the two together, which leads to the lack of data features. Therefore it is necessary to integrate the two types of algorithms for research. The paper proposes hybrid feature measurement based on linear and nonlinear nonnegative matrix factorization. The algorithm utilizes the idea of feature fusion. The basis image features of the two algorithms are mixed in the model. Finally a feature similarity measurement is obtained as the measure method. The proposed algorithm has good performance on the public datasets and effectively improves the recognition. © 2022 ACM.
