Feature extraction is an initial and essential part for the development of accurate predictive machine learning classifiers. In the research field of drug discovery and development, the usage of molecular descriptors, which can be defined as mathematical representations of molecules' chemical properties, is a challenging task not only for machine learning studies but even for "classical wet lab"approaches. However, a high diversity of these descriptors is required in order to exploit all the available knowledge and, consequently, to maximize the potentially predictive power of approaches that could be applied for the discovery of new bioactive compounds against one or more molecular targets. Furthermore, the representation and normalization of these information is considered a rather time-consuming process. Herein, we present an approach that employs the power of cloud and distributing computing for the extraction, processing and representation of big datasets, leading to the generation of molecular descriptors in a reasonable time frame. © 2022 ACM.

This paper proposes a secure steganography scheme in Opus pulse domain. Opus is a versatile audio codec designed for interactive Internet applications and is widely used in the Internet communication applications. In Opus pulse domain, there exists a large embedding space, which makes it an ideal carrier for steganography. The challenge is that the generation of pulse samples depends on the value of previous pulse samples, so the embedding operation must be carried out at a single sample, otherwise it will lead to distortion drift. This paper proposes a scheme with message transform and rate-distortion evaluation to improve statistical security. The experiment results show that the proposed scheme achieves good auditory quality and statistical security with a large embedding capacity.

The inspection of products and assessment of quality is connected with high costs and time effort in many industrial domains. This also applies to the forestry industry. Utilizing state-of-the-art deep learning models allows automizing the analysis of wooden piles in a vision-based manner. In this work, a parallel two-step approach is presented for the segmentation and multi-facet classification of individual logs, according to the wood type and quality. The present approach is based on a preliminary log localization step and like this allows determining the quality, volume and also the value of individual logs, respectively the whole wooden pile. Using a YOLOv4 model for wood species classification for douglas firs, pines and larches results in an accuracy of 74.53%, while a quality classification model for spruce logs reaches 86.58%. In addition to that, the trained U-NET segmentation model reaches an accuracy of 93%. In the future, the underlying data set and models will be further improved and integrated to a mobile application for the on site analysis of wooden piles by foresters. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Motivated by the needs of precise carbon emission measurement and real-time surveillance for CO 2 management in cities, we present CitySee, a real-time CO 2 -monitoring system using sensor networks for an urban area (around 100 square kilometers). In order to conduct environment monitoring in a real-time and long-term manner, CitySee has to address the following challenges, including sensor deployment, data collection, data processing, and network management. In this discussion, we mainly focus on the sensor deployment problem so that necessary requirements like connectivity, coverage, data representability are satisfied. We also briefly go through the solutions for the remaining challenges. In CitySee, the sensor deployment problem can be abstracted as a relay node placement problem under hole-constraint. By carefully taking all constraints and real deployment situations into account, we propose efficient and effective approaches and prove that our scheme uses additional relay nodes at most twice of the minimum. We evaluate the performance of our approach through extensive simulations resembling realistic deployment. The results show that our approach outperforms previous strategies. We successfully apply this design into CitySee, a large-scale wireless sensor network consisting of 1096 relay nodes and 100 sensor nodes in Wuxi City, China.

Program affordability needs to be built-in at the initial concept formulation stage. For NASA's space exploration vision this is critical for long range sustainability of human presence in space. What is often overlooked in the initial concept formulation of a large scale system endeavor such as NASA's Constellation program is the hidden cost of maintaining requisite operational safety margins and redundancy through adequate supply chain logistics. Ensuring adequate supply chain logistics necessitates the integration of operations and maintenance cycles. What enables this integration is the coordination and reconciliation across multiple equipment types of system health features and logistical information such as: (1) prognostic drivers from Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) systems producing proactive condition-based "maintain me" demands, (2) maintenance management systems tracking usage and producing scheduled maintenance demands, (3) unscheduled maintenance demands resulting from any trouble reports entered by human observers of conditions missed by the IVHM system, and (4) implicit maintenance demands resulting from mission plans which require assignment of vehicular/robotic assets and consequently require assurance of the assigned assets' fitness for the intended tasks. In this paper we discuss how Coordinated Multi-source Maintenance on Demand (CMMD) technology, which is being is transitioned to the USMC Coherent Analytical Computing Environment (CACE) program and the Joint Strike Fighter Program, can be applied to the NASA domain, and its benefits in terms of mission affordability, operations efficiency and system health effectiveness. Using concepts derived from CMMD, we discuss the kind of IVHM capabilities needed to optimize multiple, parallel, yet inter-linked, operations-maintenance cycles, thereby optimizing program affordability while meeting specific mission supportability requirements across a broad range of mission scenarios.

In fresh food superstores, the freshness period of most vegetable products is relatively short, and the quality of vegetables will deteriorate due to the increase in storage time and cannot be sold on the next day, so it is very important to determine the total daily replenishment for superstores. This paper discusses the optimization problem of daily replenishment total and pricing decisions. In this paper, firstly, the bivariate correlation coefficient analysis is carried out using SPSS to calculate the correlation coefficients between the total sales volume of each category and the unit price of sales;secondly, the regression model is established to derive the fitting equations and the R2 the test is carried out. For the superstore revenue optimization problem, firstly, the total daily replenishment strategy model of each vegetable category was established, and secondly, the pricing strategy model of each vegetable category was established through the wholesale price and sales unit price. Considering the transportation loss and deterioration of vegetables, the goods will be sold at a discount, this paper establishes the pricing strategy model of undiscounted and discounted sales. Finally, the optimal model is obtained based on the simulated annealing algorithm to ensure revenue maximization. The final maximum returns (RMB) from July 1-7, 2023 are 8091.56, 8102.48, 8097.47, 8114.66, 8166.51, 8115.96, and 8126.11, respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Facial expressions are the most effective way to characterize people’s motives, emotions, and feelings. Several new methods are proposed each year; however, the accuracy of facial expression recognition still needs to be improved especially in uncontrolled conditions. In this paper, we propose a hybrid facial expression model that considers both texture and orientation features to classify expressions. Two types of descriptors namely Local binary pattern and Weber local descriptor are used to preserve the local intensity information and orientation of edges. In the next step, computing the Histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) features from the Local binary pattern and Weber local descriptor images to capture micro-expressions. Then, the AdaBoost feature selection algorithm is utilized to choose the best features from the combined HOG features. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the method proposed in this study performs better than existing methods.

IEEE 802.11e standard is developed for QoS provisioning in WLANs. Admission Control is a mechanism that controls stations to be served in WLANs. In practice, evaluation of admission control plays an important role for QoS support. The goal of this paper is to calculate the WLAN delays with ACs. The delay calculation can be used to guarantee the QoS of the VoIP and video streams, which is divided into three parts. One is the propagation delay. Another is that packets queue up in stations or APs. Lastly, the delay is taken due to collisions. For VoIP and video streams, the second delay is more important than other two delays. Consequently, we will focus on the calculation of the second delay. Some simulations and numerical results are provided and discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more accurate in calculating the delay of packets in WLANs.

Local Reconstruction Codes (LRCs) allow for recovery from a small number of erasures in a local manner based on just a few other codeword symbols. They have emerged as the codes of choice for large scale distributed storage systems due to the very efficient repair of failed storage nodes in the typical scenario of a single or few nodes failing, while also offering fault tolerance against worst-case scenarios with more erasures. A maximally recoverable (MR) LRC offers the best possible blend of such local and global fault tolerance, guaranteeing recovery from all erasure patterns which are information-theoretically correctable given the presence of local recovery groups. In an (n, r, h, a)-LRC, the n codeword symbols are partitioned into r disjoint groups each of which include a local parity checks capable of locally correcting a erasures. The codeword symbols further obey h heavy (global) parity checks. Such a code is maximally recoverable if it can correct all patterns of a erasures per local group plus up to h additional erasures anywhere in the codeword. This property amounts to linear independence of all such subsets of columns of the parity check matrix. MR LRCs have received much attention recently, with many explicit constructions covering different regimes of parameters. Unfortunately, all known constructions require a large field size that is exponential in h or a, and it is of interest to obtain MR LRCs of minimal possible field size. In this work, we develop an approach based on function fields to construct MR LRCs. Our method recovers, and in most parameter regimes improves, the field size of previous approaches. For instance, for the case of small r Ε log n and large h > Ω(n1−Ε), we improve the field size from roughly nh to nΕh. For the case of a = 1 (one local parity check), we improve the field size quadratically from rh(h+1) to rhb(h+1)/2c for some range of r. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are subject to node failures because of limited energy and link unreliability which makes the design of routing protocols in such networks a challenging task. The multipath routing scheme is an optimal alternative to address this problem which splits the traffic across multiple paths instead of routing all the traffic along a single path. However, using more paths introduces more contentions which degrade energy efficiency. The problem becomes even more difficult in the scenario of multiple source-destination pairs since the flow distribution of each link is uncertain. Our goal is to minimize the energy cost and provide the robust transmission by choosing the optimal paths. We propose a Distributed Energy Efficient Routing protocol (D2ER) to achieve this goal. In D2ER, we first study the problem from a theoretical standpoint by mapping it to the multi-commodity network design problem. Then, we employ the transportation method to solve this problem since it is hard to build a global addressing scheme due to the great number of sensor nodes. Simulation results demonstrate that our optimal algorithm can save energy drastically.
