Ceylon tea industry faces a major challenge in the form of pathogen-induced crop loss, with Blister Blight (BB) caused by Exobasidium vexans posing the greatest threat, leading to harvest losses of over 30%. This fungus attacks the tender tea shoots, resulting in a direct negative impact on the tea harvest. This paper presents a system to identify the suspicious tea leaves and BB disease at its early stages along with an assessment of severity, offering a potential solution to this critical issue. By utilizing real-time object detection, the system filters out non-tea leaves from the captured initial image of a segment of a tea plant. The identified tea leaves are then subjected to BB identification and severity assessment based on differing visual symptoms of the BB stages. This approach enables the system to accurately identify BB in the initial stage and severity stage, allowing for timely and targeted intervention to minimize crop losses. The YOLOv8 model has been able to correctly identify 98% of the objects it has detected as relevant (precision), and it has been able to correctly identify 96% of all the relevant objects present in the scene (recall). The Residual Network 50 (Resnet50) convolutional neural network (CNN) model was selected as the final model, achieving an accuracy of 89.90% during the training phase and an accuracy of 88.26% during the testing phase. © 2023 IEEE.

One of the benefits of using executable specifications such as Behavioral Programming (BP) is the ability to align the system implementation with its requirements. This is facilitated in BP by a protocol that allows independent implementation modules that specify what the system may, must, and must not do. By that, each module can enforce a single system requirement, including negative specifications such as “don't do X after Y.” The existing BP protocol, however, allows only the enforcement of safety requirements and does not support the execution of liveness properties such as “do X at least three times.” To model liveness requirements in BP directly and independently, we propose idioms for tagging states with “must-finish;’ indicating that tasks are yet to be completed. We show that this idiom allows a direct specification of known requirements patterns from the literature. We also offer semantics and two execution mechanisms, one based on a translation to Büchi automata and the other based on a Markov decision process (MDP). The latter approach offers the possibility of utilizing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms, which bear the potential to handle large software systems effectively. This paper presents a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the proposed approach using a proof-of-concept tool. A formal analysis of the MDP-based execution mechanism is given in an appendix.

The development of population intelligence has shown a great trend of a linear surge in recent years, and a large number of intelligent algorithms inspired by biology have been studied. Among them, differential evolution (DE) algorithms have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their simplicity, high efficiency, powerful search capability, etc. DE has strong exploitability and can approach the global optimum faster, but it cannot avoid the phenomenon of search stagnation and premature convergence. To address the drawbacks of DE, the two-stage bootstrap constrained differential evolution algorithm (TSGCDE) is proposed in this paper. In TSGCDE, instead of the traditional one population, the population is divided into two as a way to increase the diversity of the population. Divided into two stages, each stage searches for optimal solutions in different directions in different populations, and the optimal solutions and the bootstrap solutions generated by the populations in the two stages are bounded by each other’s bootstrap, which makes the DE have a more powerful optimal-seeking ability and easier to jump out of the local optimum. To validate the performance of TSGCDE, we conducted experiments on CEC2013 and CEC2014 benchmarks with some well-known algorithm variants, and the experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is competitive. © 2023, Taiwan Ubiquitous information CO LTD. The paper is devoted to developing scientific principles, methods, means, and information technology of model-oriented verification and evidence-based assessment using functional safety and cybersecurity cases for programmable systems of critical applications (PSCA). In particular, information and control systems important for the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs), aerospace systems, railway domains, etc., developed using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and hardware platforms are reviewed. The goal is to ensure the guaranteed completeness and reliability of its functional safety and cybersecurity assessment by developing and implementing a set of formal and semi-formal methods and tools that consider defects of different nature - physical, design, trojans, and vulnerabilities that can be attacked and lead to a fatal system failure, which results in damaging the critical IT infrastructure. The methods shown are based on integrating algebraic, tabular, graph models, and case assessment methodology. The methods are implemented as appropriate technologies for evidence-based verification and evaluation of PSCA. For formal methods, a prototype of a translator of Very High-Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Description Language (VHDL) code is developed into an algebra of behaviors. It provides evidence-based verification and a framework and tools to design reports on assessing the cybersecurity and functional safety of programmable systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Multimodal sarcasm detection (MSD) is essential for various downstream tasks. Existing MSD methods tend to rely on spurious correlations. These methods often mistakenly prioritize non-essential features yet still make correct predictions, demonstrating poor generalizability beyond training environments. Regarding this phenomenon, this paper undertakes several initiatives. Firstly, we identify two primary causes that lead to the reliance of spurious correlations. Secondly, we address these challenges by proposing a novel method that integrate Multimodal Incongruities via Contrastive Learning (MICL) for multimodal sarcasm detection. Specifically, we first leverage incongruity to drive multi-view learning from three views: token-patch, entity-object, and sentiment. Then, we introduce extensive data augmentation to mitigate the biased learning of the textual modality. Additionally, we construct a test set, SPMSD, which consists potential spurious correlations to evaluate the the model's generalizability. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of MICL on benchmark datasets, along with the analyses showcasing MICL's advancement in mitigating the effect of spurious correlation. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Predicting water quality is essential to preserving human health and environmental sustain ability. Traditional water quality assessment methods often face scalability and real-time monitoring limitations. With accuracies of 62%, 72 %, 83 %, 69%, 63 %, 66%, 71 %, 63 %, and 64%, respectively, the current techniques utilized were Logistic Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forest Regressor, Extreme Gradient Boosting, Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbors, Support Vector Machine, AdaBoost, and Bagging [9]. This study addresses these challenges by leveraging Adaptive Synthetic Sampling (ADASYN) to balance the dataset and evaluating model performance on datasets of 5,000 and 10,000 entries per class. A robust dataset obtained from Kaggle was used, with five models - Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN), Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Random Forest - evaluated and compared. The proposed methods demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy, with XGBoost achieving the highest accuracy of 95.53%, followed by Random Forest at 93.98%. This work underscores the importance of advanced machine learning techniques in addressing the limitations of traditional methods, enhancing accuracy, scalability, and adaptability in water quality prediction. These findings contribute to advancing environmental monitoring and management practices with reliable, data-driven insights.

With the rapid development and evolution of information technologies, the big data industry has been experiencing exponential explosive data growth. Since the huge business and research value behind the large-scale data, big data technology has become one of the hotest research fields in academia and industry. To the big data, storing and processing the data is core function of the file systems. Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is the most typical distributed big data architecture, which has the characteristics of high reliability, high fault tolerance, and low hardware cost. HDFS provides the efficient task implementation and fault tolerance among nodes by Remote Procedure Call (RPC) mechanism. However, the traditional RPC mechanism has remarkable defects with the fixed timing method, and cannot quickly establish the relationship between node downtime and network congestion. In this paper, we propose an improved adaptive RPC mechanism for node fault tolerance and performance. The proposed method classifies nodes by the data block access statistic, and dynamically adjusts the RPC interval time. This method can be used to reduce the networking traffic and processing pressure of NameNode nodes, and improve the I/O and task performance. Through the node classification, an inrack method is used to achieve better performance on fault tolerance. Eventually, we design the extensive experiments to evaluate the proposed method, and experimental results show it improves the performance compared with state-of-the-art method. © 2022 IEEE.

This workshop is designed to intentionally share experiences and connect participants to their greatest asset, their voice. There is power in your voice. Engaging interaction, thought-provoking storytelling, and authentic truth telling will open the way for understanding the value of harnessing voice power when navigating professionally and personally. Despite diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, stated commitments to diversity, the demographic characteristics of the professoriate and industry look remarkably like the faculty and professionals of 50 years ago for Blacks in computing. Blacks in computing constantly face discrimination in the form of microaggressions and white fragility. This discrimination has not translated to greater Black faculty and professional representation in their career advancement. Instead, the health of both faculty and professionals are being adversely impacted, as they are experiencing insomnia, anxiety, depression, emotional distress, and physical exhaustion. This disruption of norms has a negatively impacted the productivity of both Black men and women at work and can lead to their demotion and dismissal. Many times, these struggles are not shared, and their voices are silenced. This workshop primarily addresses how Blacks in computing can use their voice to advance their careers and utilize proven voice positioning strategies to harness their voice power and to maximize professional and personal wellbeing. These voice strategies will facilitate both Black men and women in their career advancement, skill development, and preparation for entry into their next career level. A failure to address these challenges has negative implications for both academia and industry

Recently, federated graph learning has attracted significant attention, as subgraphs of a global graph may often distribute across different institutions and are subject to privacy restrictions. However, inevitable data heterogeneity among sub-graphs can lead to poor performance of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) trained by vanilla federated learning algorithm, which has been neglected before. To address this problem we look at subgraphs and find that there are usually overlapping nodes among them. Inspired by the common overlapping nodes among subgraphs, we propose GraphFed, a subgraph federated learning framework which solve the challenge in terms of both data augmentation and personalized federated learning. GraphFed uses common overlapping nodes among subgraphs to locate lost node information and applies data augmentation by retrieving lost nodes and forming common node sets that mitigates data distribution difference. Furthermore, GraphFed treats the overlapping nodes as bridges to calculate the distance among different subgraphs, which implies the similarity of the graph data distribution. Then, we use the distance to perform personalized federated learning. Empirical results and analysis on three real-world graph datasets with graph federated learning settings demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework. © 2023 IEEE.

Accurate segmentation of the prostate and its substructures consist the most important component for reliable localization and characterization of prostate cancer. In this study a Spatial Attention Residual U-Net (Spatial ResU-Net) deep learning (DL) network is proposed for segmenting the transitional zone of the prostate, by leveraging the learning capacity of spatial attention modules and residual connections. Spatial attention modules efficiently extract features in intra-channel manner and boost the performance of encoder and decoder while residual connections facilitate the information flow within the different network's levels. The proposed model was compared against 8 state-of-the-art DL segmentation models demonstrating a superior performance. The improvement in terms of Sensitivity, Dice Score, Hausdorff distance and Average surface distance was at least 1%, 1%, 0.05 mm and 0.09 mm, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.
