Federated learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm of distributed machine learning. However, when applied to wireless network scenarios, FL usually suffers from high communication cost because clients need to transmit their updated gradients to a server in every training round. Although many gradient compression techniques like sparsification and quantization are proposed, they compress clients' gradients independently, without considering the correlations among gradients. In this paper, we propose SVDFed, a collaborative gradient compression framework for FL. SVDFed utilizes Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to find a few basis vectors, whose linear combination can well represent clients' gradients at a certain round. Due to the correlations among gradients, these basis vectors can still well approximate new gradients in many subsequent rounds. With the help of basis vectors, clients only need to upload the coefficients of the linear combination to the server, which greatly reduces communication cost. In addition, SVDFed leverages the classical PID (Proportional, Integral, Derivative) control to determine the proper time to update basis vectors to maintain their representation ability. Through experiments, we demonstrate that SVDFed outperforms existing gradient compression methods in FL. For example, compared to a popular gradient quantization method QSGD, SVDFed can reduce the communication overhead by 66 % and pending time by 99 %. © 2023 IEEE.

A boundary is a physical or virtual line that marks the edge or limit of a specific region, which has been widely used in many applications, such as autonomous driving, virtual wall, and robotic lawn mowers. However, none of existing work can well balance the cost, the deployability, and the scalability of a boundary. In this paper, we propose a new RFID-based boundary scheme together with its detection algorithm called RF-Boundary, which has the competitive advantages of being battery-free, low-cost, and easy-to-maintain. We develop two technologies of phase gradient and dual-antenna DoA to address the key challenges posed by RF-boundary, in terms of lack of calibration information and multi-edge interference. We implement a prototype of RF-Boundary with commercial RFID systems and a mobile robot. Extensive experiments verify the feasibility as well as the good performance of RF-Boundary.

Smart speakers bring convenience to people's daily lives. However, various attacks can be launched against smart speakers to execute malicious commands, which may cause serious safety or security issues. The existing solutions against sophisticated attacks such as voice replay attacks and voice synthesis attacks require intrusive modifications of the smart speaker hardware and/or software, which are impractical for general users. In this work, we present a novel security scheme- VoiceGuard that can effectively detect and block unauthorized voice commands to smart speakers. VoiceGuard does not require any modification to smart speakers' hardware or software. We implement a prototype of VoiceGuard on two popular smart speakers: Amazon Echo Dot and Google Home Mini, and evaluate the scheme in three real-world testbeds, which include both single-user and multi-user scenarios. The experimental results show that VoiceGuard achieves an accuracy of 97% in blocking malicious voice commands issued by illegitimate sources while having a negligible impact on the user experience.

Pseudo-Boolean optimization (PBO) is usually used to model combinatorial optimization problems, especially for some real-world applications. Despite its significant importance in both theory and applications, there are few works on using local search to solve PBO. This paper develops a novel local search framework for PBO, which has three main ideas. First, we design a two-level selection strategy to evaluate all candidate variables. Second, we propose a novel deep optimization strategy to disturb some search spaces. Third, a sampling flipping method is applied to help the algorithm jump out of local optimum. Low-resolution images inherently contain less information, making effective feature extraction more challenging and posing difficulties for training neural networks. However, if neural networks can be trained successfully on low-resolution images, this could significantly reduce memory storage requirements and computational costs. In this study, we address the limitations of low-resolution brain MRI images by enhancing the available information through wavelet transform techniques. Specifically, we leverage the high-frequency coefficients obtained from wavelet transforms and the Hurst exponent to improve feature representation and optimize model training for convolutional neural networks (CNN), which is referred to as the wavelet CNN (WCNN). We demonstrate that WCNN outperforms standard CNNs in multi-class classification tasks, distinguishing among four categories of brain MRI images such as normal, glioma, meningioma, and pituitary tumor images. This approach highlights the potential to achieve high classification accuracy even with low-resolution data, ultimately reducing the memory and computational resources required for data processing and model training. © 2025 IEEE.

Geomagnetic disturbances are a threat to the reliability and security of our national critical energy infrastructures. These events specifically result in geomagnetically induced currents, which can cause damage to transformers due to magnetic saturation. In order to mitigate these effects, blocker devices must be placed in optimal locations. Finding this placement requires a dc representation of the ac transmission lines, which this paper discusses. Different decisions in this process, including the method of representing the blocking devices, result in significant variations to the power loss calculations. To analyze these effects, we conclude the paper by comparing the losses on a sample network with different modeling implementations.

We present a novel approach to performing fitness approximation in genetic algorithms (GAs) using machine-learning (ML) models, through dynamic adaptation to the evolutionary state. Maintaining a dataset of sampled individuals along with their actual fitness scores, we continually update a fitness-approximation ML model throughout an evolutionary run. We compare different methods for: 1) switching between actual and approximate fitness, 2) sampling the population, and 3) weighting the samples. Experimental findings demonstrate significant improvement in evolutionary runtimes, with fitness scores that are either identical or slightly lower than that of the fully run GA-depending on the ratio of approximate-to-actual-fitness computation. Although we focus on evolutionary agents in Gymnasium (game) simulators-where fitness computation is costly-our approach is generic and can be easily applied to many different domains. © 2023, CC BY.

Deploying high-performance convolutional neural network (CNN) models on low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites for rapid remote sensing image processing has attracted significant interest from industry and academia. However, the limited resources available on LEO satellites contrast with the demands of resource-intensive CNN models, necessitating the adoption of ground-station server assistance for training and updating these models. Existing approaches often require large floating-point operations (FLOPs) and substantial model parameter transmissions, presenting considerable challenges. To address these issues, this paper introduces a ground-station server-assisted framework. With the proposed framework, each layer of the CNN model contains only one learnable feature map (called the seed feature map) from which other feature maps are generated based on specific rules. The hyperparameters of these rules are randomly generated instead of being trained, thus enabling the generation of multiple feature maps from the seed feature map and significantly reducing FLOPs. Furthermore, since the random hyperparameters can be saved using a few random seeds, the ground station server assistance can be facilitated in updating the CNN model deployed on the LEO satellite. Experimental results on the ISPRS Vaihingen, ISPRS Potsdam, UAVid, and LoveDA datasets for semantic segmentation services demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches. In particular, the SineFM-based model achieves a higher mIoU than the UNetFormer on the UAVid dataset, with 3.3 × fewer parameters and 2.2 × fewer FLOPs. © 2023 IEEE.

The fine-tuning paradigm in addressing longtail learning tasks has sparked significant interest since the emergence of foundation models. Nonetheless, how fine-tuning impacts performance in long-tail learning was not explicitly quantified. In this paper, we disclose that heavy fine-tuning may even lead to nonnegligible performance deterioration on tail classes, and lightweight fine-tuning is more effective. The reason is attributed to inconsistent class conditions caused by heavy fine-tuning. With the observation above, we develop a low-complexity and accurate long-tail learning algorithms LIFT with the goal of facilitating fast prediction and compact models by adaptive lightweight fine-tuning. Experiments clearly verify that both the training time and the learned parameters are significantly reduced with more accurate predictive performance compared with state-of-the-art approaches.
