Through a detailed analysis of the theoretical basis for MOOCs in terms of educational learning theories, this paper attempts at finding the corresponding relationship between the theories and MOOCs, which not only theoretically explains the reasons why MOOCs exceed all the previous education models, but also empirically proves it with voluminous facts and data. The author conducts this research in the hope of enlightening the online education platform of other types. Besides, this paper provides the model framework and strategy to multidimensional educational review based on MOOCs. The model and strategy are applicable not only to MOOCs, the large-scale online education, but also to various online education platforms.

On large-scale clusters, tens to hundreds of applications can simultaneously access a parallel file system, leading to contention and in its wake to degraded application performance. However, the degree of interference depends on the specific file access pattern. On the basis of synchronized time-slice profiles, we compare the interference potential of different file access patterns. We consider both micro-benchmarks, to study the effects of certain patterns in isolation, and realistic applications to gauge the severity of such interference under production conditions. In particular, we found that writing large files simultaneously with small files can slow down the latter at small chunk sizes but the former at larger chunk sizes. We further show that such effects can seriously affect the runtime of real applications-up to a factor of five in one instance. In the future, both our insights and profiling techniques can be used to automatically classify the interference potential between applications and to adjust scheduling decisions accordingly.

Cluster systems usually run several applications-often from different users-concurrently, with individual applications competing for access to shared resources such as the file system or the network. Low application performance is therefore not always the result of inefficient program design, but may instead be caused by interference from outside. However, knowing the difference is essential for an appropriate response. Unfortunately, traditional performance-analysis techniques consider an application always in isolation, without the ability to compare its performance to the overall performance conditions on the system when it was executed. In this paper, we present a novel approach of how to correlate the performance behavior of applications running side by side. To accomplish this, we divide the application runtime into fine-grained time slices whose boundaries are synchronized across the entire system. Mapping performance data related to shared resources onto these time slices, we are able to establish the simultaneity of their usage across jobs, which can be indicative of inter-application interference. Our experiments show that such interference effects, for which the developer is usually not to blame, can degrade application performance significantly.

The goal of Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) languages is to improve programmer productivity in large scale parallel machines. However, PGAS programs may have many fine-grained shared accesses that lead to performance degradation. Manual code transformations or compiler optimizations are required to improve the performance of programs with fine-grained accesses. The downside of manual code transformations is the increased program complexity that hinders programmer productivity. On the other hand, most compiler optimizations of fine-grain accesses require knowledge of physical data mapping and the use of parallel loop constructs. This paper presents an optimization for the Unified Parallel C language that combines compile time (static) and runtime (dynamic) coalescing of shared data, without the knowledge of physical data mapping. Larger messages increase the network efficiency and static coalescing decreases the overhead of library calls. The performance evaluation uses two microbenchmarks and three benchmarks to obtain scaling and absolute performance numbers on up to 32768 cores of a Power 775 machine. Our results show that the compiler transformation results in speedups from 1.15X up to 21X compared with the baseline versions and that they achieve up to 63% the performance of the MPI versions. © 2013 ACM.

This paper presents a new approach for automatic building detection in very high resolution satellite images. The proposed method is a cooperative multi-agent approach between both an edge and region approach. In the pretreatment step, a supervisor agent finds a building's corner using Harris detector. Starting from these points, a cooperation process is used to extract buildings. Experiments are done on images of Strasbourg city taken by Quickbird. © 2012 IEEE.

A Hybrid Circular Queue Method for Iterative Stencil Computations on GPUs

In this paper, we present a hybrid circular queue method that can significantly boost the performance of stencil computations on GPU by carefully balancing usage of registers and shared-memory. Unlike earlier methods that rely on circular queues predominantly implemented using indirectly addressable shared memory, our hybrid method exploits a new reuse pattern spanning across the multiple time steps in stencil computations so that circular queues can be implemented by both shared memory and registers effectively in a balanced manner. We describe a framework that automatically finds the best placement of data in registers and shared memory in order to maximize the performance of stencil computations. Validation using four different types of stencils on three different GPU platforms shows that our hybrid method achieves speedups up to 2.93X over methods that use circular queues implemented with shared-memory only.

A hierarchical classification based road extraction approach is proposed in this paper. In order to extract road network, a spectral based-classification associates a confidence score to each region in the image. This score is used to extract road region and its constraints for each iteration of the hierarchy. Road localization is based on Radon transform and expert knowledge. The quality assessments in urban area images show the benefits of the introduced approach.
