The electrical power transmission lines play a crucial role in maintaining a continuous electricity supply. However, the exposed environment of these lines increases the risks of faults occurrence, necessitating prompt detection, and classification, to eliminate them within a specified time. In light of this, the present study introduces a methodology for the detection and classification of faults in a three-phase transmission line system employing the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). A 220 kV, 300 km three-phase transmission line system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink software, where the current and voltage signals were generated under different fault conditions including fault types, fault inception time, and fault resistance. The fundamental components of these signals were used as inputs in the ELM model. Different shunt fault types, including line-to-ground, line-to-line, double-line-to-ground, triple-line, and triple-line-to-ground were applied for fault detection and classification framework. Furthermore, the optimum number of hidden neurons in the ELM model was investigated in this study. In terms of the Mean Squared Error (MSE) and correlation coefficient, four ELM variants based on Sine, Sigmoid, Radial Basis, and Triangular Basis transfer functions were assessed for each module. The outcome of these metrics indicates that the ELM with the sigmoid model demonstrated superior performance compared to the other ELM models. Based on statistical metrics MSE, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and also the computational time, the efficiency of ELM-Sigmoid and state-of-the-art methods of Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network (MLPNN) and Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) were compared and analyzed during training and testing phases. The results obtained revealed that the ELM-Sigmoid model outperforms the other models in the detection and classification of shunt faults with significant accuracy and fast computational speed. ©

Vision-based automatic fruit counting with UAV

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for smart agriculture is becoming increasingly popular. This is evidenced by recent scientific works, as well as the various competitions organised on this topic. Therefore, in this work we present a system for automatic fruit counting using UAVs. To detect them, our solution uses a vision algorithm that processes streams from an RGB camera and a depth sensor using classical image operations. Our system also allows the planning and execution of flight trajectories, taking into account the minimisation of flight time and distance covered. We tested the proposed solution in simulation and obtained an average score of 87.27/100 points from a total of 500 missions. We also submitted it to the UAV Competition organised as part of the ICUAS 2024 conference, where we achieved an average score of 84.83/100 points, placing 6th in a field of 23 teams and advancing to the finals. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper proposed a passive fault tolerant control (FTC) approach for the class of linear parameter-varying systems to deal with faults and failures in the actuator channel. The method provided in this study combines the robustness feature of integral sliding mode control (ISMC) and control allocation (CA) obtained through singular value decomposition of the input matrix. The purpose is to effectively handle faults and failures along the entire operating spectrum, which involves various scheduling parameters. This technique is effective because the same baseline controller, initially developed for a nominal system, can deal with a wide range of faults and failures without acquiring fault information. The performance of ISM-FTC is tested on a longitudinal model of aircraft system. Numerical simulations indicate no noticeable difference in tracking performance between nominal and faulty conditions.

Strong Stabilization of the Acrobot at the Down–Up Equilibrium Point ⋆

In this paper, the strong stabilization of the Acrobot at the Down-Up equilibrium point is addressed, with the first link being downward and the second link being upright. By converting the strong stabilization of the Acrobot at the Down–Up equilibrium point equivalently to the existence and design of a stable stabilizing controller for a fourth-order single-input single-output linear plant with adjustable zeros, a pair of poles on the imaginary axis, and a pair of real poles located symmetrically with respect to the origin, this paper has three main contributions. Firstly, the existence of a stable stabilizing controller for any Acrobot which is linearly controllable at the Down–Up equilibrium point is proved by showing the range of the adjustable zero via adjusting a parameter of the output signal. Secondly, a necessary and sufficient condition on the mechanical parameters of the Acrobot is provided to guarantee the existence of a second-order stable stabilizing controller for the Acrobot around its Down– Up equilibrium point. Thirdly, a direct method is presented to design a second-order stable controller, whose transfer function is preset with three parameters. By utilizing the Liénard– Chipart criterion for a fourth-order polynomial, the necessary and sufficient conditions on these parameters for achieving the strong stabilization are obtained, which are expressed in a cascade form for obtaining these parameters conveniently. A numerical example is presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Semantic Scene Completion (SSC) is pivotal in autonomous driving perception, frequently confronted with the complexities of weather and illumination changes. The long-term strategy involves fusing multi-modal information to bolster the system’s robustness. Radar, increasingly utilized for 3D target detection, is gradually replacing LiDAR in autonomous driving applications, offering a robust sensing alternative. In this paper, we focus on the potential of 3D radar in semantic scene completion, pioneering cross-modal refinement techniques for improved robustness against weather and illumination changes, and enhancing SSC performance. Regarding model architecture, we propose a three-stage tight fusion approach on BEV to realize a fusion framework for point clouds and images. Based on this foundation, we designed three cross-modal distillation modules—CMRD, BRD, and PDD. Our approach enhances the performance in both radar-only (R-LiCROcc) and radar-camera (RC-LiCROcc) settings by distilling to them the rich semantic and structural information of the fused features of LiDAR and camera. Finally, our LC-Fusion (teacher model), R-LiCROcc and RC-LiCROcc achieve the best performance on the nuScenes-Occupancy dataset, with mIOU exceeding the baseline by 22.9%, 44.1%, and 15.5%, respectively. In this paper, we propose a real-time FPGA implementation of the Semi-Global Matching (SGM) stereo vision algorithm. The designed module supports a 4K/Ultra HD (3840 ×2160 pixels @ 30 frames per second) video stream in a 4 pixel per clock (ppc) format and a 64-pixel disparity range. The baseline SGM implementation had to be modified to process pixels in the 4ppc format and meet the timing constrains, however, our version provides results comparable to the original design. The solution has been positively evaluated on the Xilinx VC707 development board with a Virtex-7 FPGA device. © 2023, CC BY.
