This paper describes a robust template matching algorithm undergoing rotation-scaling-translation (RST) variations via our proposed spiral projection model (SPM). Compared to other model-based methods, the proposed algorithm provides the structural and statistical information about the template in a more general and easier to comprehend format. The well-defined spiral-based projection provides high sensitivity and high scanning efficiency compared with ring projection [1]. It also preserves the inherent spatial information better than the radial projection [2]. In addition, we introduced a novel image warping scheme called the spiral aggregation map (SAM). It not only provides an efficient method for generating the desired projection profiles for matching, it also enables us to determine the rotation angle, and is invariant to scale changes. The experimental evaluation shows that the properties of the algorithm achieved very attractive results.

This paper illustrates three levels of video units for video segmentation from coarse to fine granularity, which include highlights, attentive visual change, and game status change. The boundaries between video shots are commonly known as scene change and the action of segmenting a video sequence into multiple shots is called scene change detection. However, different applications are suitable for different fine granularities of the shot boundary. In this paper, we take the content semantic into consideration to segment the video. In performance evaluation, we choose the sports programs as the testing data, because the sports video entertains large population of audiences and is very popular. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed method for sports programs.

We propose an image search system for flowers on a mobile phone. Mobile phones have more limited resources than desktop computers in terms of CPU, RAM and data storage. The database that we created has 45 classes. We used 182 training images and 246 test images. We used an HSV histogram as a color feature. The accuracy rate using only color features was 44.86% with radius C=20. We use SURF as a shape feature. The accuracy rate using only shape-based featurewas 47.31% with SURF vectors S=25. We combine both color and shape features to achieved accuracy 61.61%.

The massive distributed, dynamical and evolutionary characteristics of World Wide Web inspire us study it drawing on the Information Foraging Theory which assumes that people prefer yield more useful information per unit cost. Understanding the value of implicit measures is also important to help World Wide Web users search more effectively. Borrowing idea from information foraging theory we propose a method to estimate the Web page information gain based on the implicit measures analysis. We developed an experimental search platform to record the URLs of the pages be browsed, the time spent reading, the time spent scrolling and the number of links be clicked. We analyzed these data using multiple linear regression modeling and obtained a regression function which could be used in calculating the information profitability of the Web pages. Then we regrouped the Web pages searched out by the descending order of the Web page information profitability. We also reported experimental data to show that the search results be regrouped can increase searching efficiency. The findings suggest that the combination of information foraging theory and implicit measures analysis support effective Web-search interaction for everyone.

Nowadays, intelligent interaction and multi-devices interaction have attracted great attention from researchers and industry, yet there are still no framework combining these two interactions together. We study this problem and present a feasible framework to solve it. This framework is based on multi-devices, and it combines interaction-data collecting, data managing and user modeling together. Furthermore, it provides flexible interfaces for application development and proposes an algorithm for integrating group model, individual model and feedback model. We developed several demos based on this framework, which demonstrate its effectiveness empirically.

This paper presents a prototype implementation of a physically interactive fitness game called Shadow Boxer. The game is controlled by body movements and it utilizes a web camera to detect the player's movements. A user study was conducted to study the playability and the effectiveness of the game as an exercising method. The results showed that playing the game significantly increased the participants' heart rate and for most of the participants, the heart rate was at the optimal exercise level after playing the game. Thus, the game can be effectively used as an exercise method. Generally, the participants enjoyed playing the game and thought of it as a possible method for training. Additionally, the study revealed ideas for improving the game experience and the usability of the interface. Copyright 2004 ACM.
