Pneumatic Muscles (PMs) - driven exoskeleton has a promising prospect in the field of rehabilitation and assistance, because of the PMs intrinsic features of compliance and high force-to-weight ratio. However, the precise control of PMs-driven exoskeleton still remains a challenging problem due to the hysteresis, time-varying parameters of PMs and complexity of the mechanism. To solve this problem, this paper presents a super twisting controller (STC), essentially a second-order sliding mode control, to realize the human gait tracking control of lower limb exoskeleton. As a result, the disturbances and uncertainties of the system can be handled, and the chattering caused by the traditional sliding mode control (SMC) could be eliminated. The stability of the closed-loop system is ensured according to the Lyapunov theorem. In addition, we conduct experiments in real exoskeleton system and the results illustrate the validity of the super twisting algorithm. Unsupervised pool-based active learning for linear regression

In many real-world machine learning applications, unlabeled data can be easily obtained, but it is very timeconsuming and/or expensive to label them. So, it is desirable to be able to select the optimal samples to label, so that a good machine learning model can be trained from a minimum amount of labeled data. Active learning (AL) has been widely used for this purpose. However, most existing AL approaches are supervised: they train an initial model from a small amount of labeled samples, query new samples based on the model, and then update the model iteratively. Few of them have considered the completely unsupervised AL problem, i.e., starting from zero, how to optimally select the very first few samples to label, without knowing any label information at all. This problem is very challenging, as no label information can be utilized. This paper studies unsupervised pool-based AL for linear regression problems. We propose a novel AL approach that considers simultaneously the informativeness, representativeness, and diversity, three essential criteria in AL. Extensive experiments on 14 datasets from various application domains, using three different linear regression models (ridge regression, LASSO, and linear support vector regression), demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed approach. Finite-size scaling of geometric renormalization flows in complex networks

Some characteristics of complex networks need to be derived from global knowledge of the network topologies, which challenges the practice for studying many large-scale real-world networks. Recently, the geometric renormalization technique has provided a good approximation framework to significantly reduce the size and complexity of a network while retaining its “slow” degrees of freedom. However, due to the finite-size effect of real networks, excessive renormalization iterations will eventually cause these important “slow” degrees of freedom to be filtered out. In this paper, we systematically investigate the finite-size scaling of structural and dynamical observables in geometric renormalization flows of both synthetic and real evolutionary networks. Our results show that these observables can be well characterized by a certain scaling function. Specifically, we show that the critical exponent implied by the scaling function is independent of these observables but depends only on the structural properties of the network. To a certain extent, the results of this paper are of great significance for predicting the observable quantities of large-scale real systems and further suggest that the potential scale invariance of many real-world networks is often masked by finite-size effects.

Adversarial semantic data augmentation for human pose estimation

Human pose estimation is the task of localizing body keypoints from still images. The state-of-the-art methods suffer from insufficient examples of challenging cases such as symmetric appearance, heavy occlusion and nearby person. To enlarge the amounts of challenging cases, previous methods augmented images by cropping and pasting image patches with weak semantics, which leads to unrealistic appearance and limited diversity. We instead propose Semantic Data Augmentation (SDA), a method that augments images by pasting segmented body parts with various semantic granularity. Furthermore, we propose Adversarial Semantic Data Augmentation (ASDA), which exploits a generative network to dynamiclly predict tailored pasting configuration. Given off-the-shelf pose estimation network as discriminator, the generator seeks the most confusing transformation to increase the loss of the discriminator while the discriminator takes the generated sample as input and learns from it. The whole pipeline is optimized in an adversarial manner. State-of-the-art results are achieved on challenging benchmarks. The code has been publicly available at https://***/Binyr/ASDA. Scaling properties of scale-free networks in degree-thresholding renormalization flows

We study the statistical properties of observables of scale-free networks in the degree-thresholding renormalization (DTR) flows. For BA scale-free networks with different sizes, we find that their structural and dynamical observables have similar scaling behavior in the DTR flow. The finite-size scaling analysis confirms this view and reveals a scaling function with a single scaling exponent that collectively captures the changes of these observables. Furthermore, for the scale-free network with a single initial size, we use its DTR snapshots as the original networks in the DTR flows, then perform a similar finite-size scaling analysis. Interestingly, the initial network and its snapshots share the same scaling exponent as the BA synthetic network. Our findings have important guiding significance for analyzing the structure and dynamic behavior of large-scale networks. Such as, in large-scale simulation scenarios with high time complexity, the DTR snapshot could serve as a substitute or guide for the initial network and then quickly explore the scaling behavior of initial networks. © 2021, CC BY.

Significant improvements to the dynamic DNA nano science have emerged in recent years, primarily due to the elaborate design of toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement (TMSD). However, it remains an ongoing challenge to design huge-scaled TMSD based sophisticated dynamic DNA structures without base-pair mismatching or unwanted secondary structures, because the sequence design complexity of TMSD will dramatically increase as the scale increases. Here we report a new polymerase triggered strand displacement (PTSD) mechanism to realize DNA strand displacement with the potential of constructing complicated dynamic DNA nanostructures. By employing proper polymerase with strand displacement activity, the target strand in a duplex will be displaced and freed during the polymerization. In this manner, DNA strand displacement takes place without considering the design complexity of branch migration domain. The mechanism was successfully applied in constructing one-layer and two-layer circuits in which the parameters involved were explored, suggesting that PTSD is feasible and able to be harnessed to construct cascading DNA circuits with high complexity. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Federated Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach via Physics-Informed Reward for Multi-Microgrid Energy Management

The utilization of large-scale distributed renewable energy promotes the development of the multi-microgrid (MMG), which raises the need of developing an effective energy management method to minimize economic costs and keep self energy-sufficiency. The multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) has been widely used for the energy management problem because of its real-time scheduling ability. However, its training requires massive energy operation data of microgrids (MGs), while gathering these data from different MGs would threaten their privacy and data security. Therefore, this paper tackles this practical yet challenging issue by proposing a federated multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (F-MADRL) algorithm via the physics-informed reward. In this algorithm, the federated learning (FL) mechanism is introduced to train the F-MADRL algorithm thus ensures the privacy and the security of data. In addition, a decentralized MMG model is built, and the energy of each participated MG is managed by an agent, which aims to minimize economic costs and keep self energy-sufficiency according to the physics-informed reward. At first, MGs individually execute the self-training based on local energy operation data to train their local agent models. Then, these local models are periodically uploaded to a server and their parameters are aggregated to build a global agent, which will be broadcasted to MGs and replace their local agents. In this way, the experience of each MG agent can be shared and the energy operation data is not explicitly transmitted, thus protecting the privacy and ensuring data security. Finally, experiments are conducted on Oak Ridge national laboratory distributed energy control communication lab microgrid (ORNL-MG) test system, and the comparisons are carried out to verify the effectiveness of introducing the FL mechanism and the outperformance of our proposed F-MADRL. Exploiting learnable joint groups for hand pose estimation

In this paper, we propose to estimate 3D hand pose by recovering the 3D coordinates of joints in a group-wise manner, where less-related joints are automatically categorized into different groups and exhibit different features. This is different from the previous methods where all the joints are considered holistically and share the same feature. The benefits of our method are illustrated by the principle of multi-task learning (MTL), i.e., by separating less-related joints into different groups (as different tasks), our method learns different features for each of them, therefore efficiently avoids the negative transfer (among less related tasks/groups of joints). The key of our method is a novel binary selector that automatically selects related joints into the same group. We implement such a selector with binary values stochastically sampled from a Concrete distribution, which is constructed using Gumbel softmax on trainable parameters. This enables us to preserve the differentiable property of the whole network. We further exploit features from those less-related groups by carrying out an additional feature fusing scheme among them, to learn more discriminative features. This is realized by implementing multiple 1x1 convolutions on the concatenated features, where each joint group contains a unique 1x1 convolution for feature fusion. The detailed ablation analysis and the extensive experiments on several benchmark datasets demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Besides, our method achieves top-1 among all the methods that do not exploit the dense 3D shape labels on the most recently released FreiHAND competition at the submission date. Path Planning Algorithm for Unmanned Surface Vessel Based on Multiobjective Reinforcement Learning

It is challenging to perform path planning tasks in complex marine environments as the unmanned surface vessel approaches the goal while avoiding obstacles. However, the conflict between the two subtarget tasks of obstacle avoidance and goal approaching makes the path planning difficult. Thus, a path planning method for unmanned surface vessel based on multiobjective reinforcement learning is proposed under the complex environment with high randomness and multiple dynamic obstacles. Firstly, the path planning scene is set as the main scene, and the two subtarget scenes including obstacle avoidance and goal approaching are divided from it. The action selection strategy in each subtarget scene is trained through the double deep -network with prioritized experience replay. A multiobjective reinforcement learning framework based on ensemble learning is further designed for policy integration in the main scene. Finally, by selecting the strategy from subtarget scenes in the designed framework, an optimized action selection strategy is trained and used for the action decision of the agent in the main scene. Compared with traditional value-based reinforcement learning methods, the proposed method achieves a 93% success rate in path planning in simulation scenes. Furthermore, the average length of the paths planned by the proposed method is 3.28% and 1.97% shorter than that of PER-DDQN and dueling DQN, respectively.
