Noise removal is an important problem in many applications. In this paper a new two-step scheme of the decision-based impulse noise removal method by means of contaminated pixel detection is proposed and comparison with direct order statistic filtering is given. The proposed methods satisfy both objective and subjective image quality. © 1999 IEEE.

One of the problems with Smart Transportation is the problem of cost and travel time. This problem is known as the Variable Routing Problem (VRP). In some real cases, in addition to considering route selection, there are limitations on the capacity and time period for the vehicle to serve each customer known as Time Windows, so VRP has developed into Variable Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW). One way to solve VRPTW is to use metaheuristic methods. However, the metaheuristic method has a weakness, which are it can get stuck in local optimums and fail to find better global solutions. To overcome this, a combination with other methods or known as hybrid is needed. The formulation of this research problem is how to develop a Smart transportation model using a metaheuristic hybrid algorithm. The purpose of this study is to develop a Smart transportation model using a metaheuristic hybrid algorithm. The method used is to combine two metaheuristic algorithms, which are the Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) and the Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS). The result of this research is a new algorithm model which is a hybrid between DA and VNS. Through a combination of global exploration using DA and local exploitation using VNS, this algorithm is expected to be able to find a better solution and faster convergence in solving VRPTW problems © 2024 IEEE.

Video object (VO) is an important concept in MPEG-4. For objects can be easily manipulated without visible distortion, the copyright protection of video objects becomes an important issue. This paper presents a watermarking scheme for video objects. Different from other methods, the proposed scheme employed inertia ellipse to achieve fast synchronization recovery in case the object was manipulated. Shape adaptive DCT and visual mask were combined to embed the watermark into the arbitrarily shaped object, which was designed to achieve the trade-off between the invisibility and the robustness. Experiments show that our algorithm is robust to object manipulations such as rotations, translations, scaling and lossy compression. Our scheme can be easily incorporated into the object-based coding framework of MPEG-4.

Modeling cellular dynamics from single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data is critical for understanding cell development and underlying gene regulatory relationships. Many current methods rely on single-cell velocity to obtain pseudotime, which can lead to inconsistencies between pseudotime and velocity. It is challenging to simultaneously infer cell pseudotime and gene interaction networks, especially in multi-branch differentiation scenarios. We present single-cell Piecewise Network (scPN), a novel high-dimensional dynamical modeling approach that iteratively extracts temporal patterns and inter-gene relationships from scRNA-seq data. To tackle multi-branch differentiation challenges, scPN models gene regulatory dynamics using piecewise gene-gene interaction networks, offering an interpretable framework for deciphering complex gene regulation patterns over time. Results on synthetic data and multiple scRNA-seq datasets demonstrate the superior performance of scPN in reconstructing cellular dynamics and identifying key transcription factors involved in development compared to existing methods. To the best of our knowledge, scPN is the first attempt at modeling that can recover pseudotime, velocity fields, and gene interactions all at once on multi-branch datasets. This paper introduces the new qualitative and quantitative methods, which can diagnose breast tumors. Qualitative methods include blood vessel display inside and outside of pathological changes part of breast, display of equivalent pixel curves at the part of pathological changes and display of breast tumor image edge. Accordingly, three feature extraction operators are proposed, i.e. the combination operators of anisotropic gradient and smoothing operator, an improved Sobel operator and an edge sharpening operator. Furthermore, quantitative diagnose approaches are discussed based on blood and oxygen contents according to abundant clinical data and pathological mechanism of breast tumors. The results of clinic show that the methods of combining qualitative and quantitative diagnose are effective for breast tumor images, especially for early and potential breast cancer. © 2005 IEEE.

Gene over-expression or under-expression is closely associated with human diseases, which contributes to phenotypic variations and diversity. To our best knowledge, there is no single open specific resource available to provide the association information between gene over- or under-expression and various diseases. In this study, we presented a comprehensive disease-associated over- and under-expressed gene database （OUGene） based on our proposed text mining pipeline and several open curated databases. It contains total 41,269 unique associa- tions between 7,238 over- or under-expressed genes and 1,480 diseases, which are supported by 81,974 evidence sentences from 56,442 articles. The OUGene is compre- hensive and covers most important therapeutic areas. Meanwhile a new scoring system is designed to rank the associations based on benchmarking against hand-curated data. OUGene provides an easy-of-use web interface for researchers to analyze these data and visualize the associ- ated networks, which can give insights to the complex relationships between over- and under-expressed genes and diseases at a system level. Brachytherapy is a minimally invasive interventional surgery used to treat prostate cancer. It is composed of three steps: dose pre-planning, implantation of radioactive seeds, and dose post-planning. In these procedures, it is crucial to determine the positions of needles and seeds, measure the volume of the prostate gland. Three-dimensional transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) imaging has been demonstrated to be a useful technique to perform such tasks. Compared to CT, MRI or X-ray imaging, US image suffers from low contrast, image speckle and shadows, making it challenging for segmentation of needles, the prostates and seeds in the 3D TRUS images. In this paper, we reviewed 3D TRUS image segmentation methods used in prostate brachytherapy including the segmentations of the needles, the prostate, as well as the seeds. Furthermore, some experimental results with agar phantom, turkey and chicken phantom, as well as the patient data are reported

Traditional surveillance video contains a large amount of information which is too jumbled. Real-time video summarization can solve this problem but also face much challenges. Different from file summarization, real-time video summarization requires higher efficiency. Meanwhile, the validity and quality of a summarization should be ensured. To tackle these problems, we propose a real-time video summarization strategy based on dual-camera. In our strategy, a static camera and a PTZ camera are necessary. The static camera is used to monitor the scene to detect and track moving targets, and the PTZ camera is used to capture the close-up information of moving targets as video summarization, and the collaboration of these two cameras is crucial. Specifically, in order to obtain multi-target summarization efficiently and effectively, the priority of target capturing is determined by its spatial information and historical representation in the scene. Extensive experiments are performed on real-time outdoor scene with our method. Experimental results show that our proposed method is robust enough to capture multiple targets in the same scene at the same time.

ENHANCING KERNEL FLEXIBILITY VIA LEARNING ASYMMETRIC LOCALLY-ADAPTIVE KERNELS

The lack of sufficient flexibility is the key bottleneck of kernel-based learning that relies on manually designed, pre-given, and non-trainable kernels. To enhance kernel flexibility, this paper introduces the concept of Locally-Adaptive-Bandwidths (LAB) as trainable parameters to enhance the Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel, giving rise to the LAB RBF kernel. The parameters in LAB RBF kernels are data-dependent, and its number can increase with the dataset, allowing for better adaptation to diverse data patterns and enhancing the flexibility of the learned function. This newfound flexibility also brings challenges, particularly with regards to asymmetry and the need for an efficient learning algorithm. To address these challenges, this paper for the first time establishes an asymmetric kernel ridge regression framework and introduces an iterative kernel learning algorithm. This novel approach not only reduces the demand for extensive support data but also significantly improves generalization by training bandwidths on the available training data. Experimental results on real datasets underscore the remarkable performance of the proposed algorithm, showcasing its superior capability in handling large-scale datasets compared to Nyström approximation-based algorithms. Moreover, it demonstrates a significant improvement in regression accuracy over existing kernel-based learning methods and even surpasses residual neural networks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
