The objective of this article is to investigate the efficacy of an optimal control method for linear systems using first-order sliding mode control, along with the incorporation of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), in controlling the behavior of a pendulum. Our focus is on developing a control law that is both optimal and robust, capable of ensuring precision, convergence, speed, and asymptotic stabilization of the system even in the presence of uncertainties and perturbations, while minimizing chattering. To validate our proposed control strategy, we present simulation results that demonstrate its usefulness and effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

In order to provide sufficient reaction time for air traffic controllers and pilots, a Flight Conflict Detection Algorithm (FCDA) based on Cylindrical Protection Zone (CPZ) in the Conformal Geometric Algebra (CGA) is proposed. Initially, the CGA description of the CPZ is represented by using the CGA forms of the central circle and central axis segments of the cylinder. Then based on the inner and outer product and geometric product operations of CGA, the positional relationship of the two CPZs is judged to determine whether a flight conflict occurs or not. Subsequently, we compared the performance of flight conflict detection methods based on rectangular protection zones, spherical protection zones, and cylindrical protection zones through experiments in CGA and Euclidean space, respectively, the experimental results show that in CGA, the proposed method has a faster speed than the flight conflict method based on cuboids, and is basically equivalent to the method based on spherical protection zones. Significantly, all CGA-based methodologies demonstrated superior speed over their Euclidean space counterparts. Considering the propensity of rectangular and spherical zones to elicit false alarms due to their expansive coverage of airspace, the CGA-CPZ-FCDA method emerges as the superior choice. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents a study on the control of a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) using a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller based on a second-order Nonlinear AutoRegressive with eXogenous inputs (NARX) model in its regression form. The objective is to achieve an optimal control of the CSTR system by leveraging the capabilities of the NARX model and the PI controller. The proposed approach is validated through simulations to demonstrate its effectiveness in regulating the CSTR reactor. © 2024 IEEE.

The United Nations has underscored the critical role of digital connectivity by integrating it into several sustainable development goals, with the ambition for nations worldwide to achieve comprehensive access by 2030. Over thousand million people, primarily in rural areas, are disconnected from the digital world, highlighting the urgent need for viable and sustainable telecommunications solutions. These areas are characterized by sparse populations and lower economic levels, presenting great challenges for connectivity. This work introduces a strategy for enhancing rural telecommunication planning using geospatial and remote sensing data, deep learning-based clustering techniques, network graphs, and terrain analysis. The objective is to develop an optimal network topology and identify prime locations for telecommunications infrastructure, such as towers or relay stations. The methodology begins with the application of an adapted Deep Embedded Clustering (DEC) technique to identify community boundaries accurately. Then, it combines geospatial data (such as roads, terrain slope, flatness, etc.) and remote sensing data (vegetation, waterways, etc.) through an optimization algorithm. This process aims to determine the most suitable sites for infrastructure placement and the best network topology for connecting these areas. The study focuses on the region of Congo, offering a detailed case study on the application of this approach. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed telecommunications expansion strategy. © Author(s) 2024.

The NARX-Laguerre model serves as a significantly simplified representation of nonlinear systems, achieved by expressing the coefficients of the NARX model through five independent Laguerre bases. This particular model is defined by five Laguerre poles, the optimal values of which ensure a noteworthy reduction in parameters. In this paper, we suggest an approach to estimate the NARX-Laguerre poles based on input/output measurements, employing the gradient method. The algorithm proposed for optimizing these poles is tested through a numerical example. © 2024 IEEE.

Localization is a crucial concern in many wireless sensor networks (WSN) applications. Moreover, getting accurate information about the geographic positions of nodes in the sensing field is necessary in order to make the collected data useful and meaningful. In this context, the heuristic distance vector called DV-Distance is widely used for range-free localization in multi-hop WSN thanks to its advantages such as its simplicity and good accuracy. However, its localization accuracy may be relatively low due to environmental conditions. In this paper, we propose an improvement of the DV-Hop algorithm based on distance computation via a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and a simple polynomial approximation technique. The proposed technique consists of RSSI measurement for distance estimation between sensor nodes thanks to low cost and simplicity compared to other techniques based on time and angle of arrival, i.e. TOA, AOA and TDOA which require more specialized equipment. However, as RSSI values may be affected by conditions environment such as noise, we propose to use the Kalman Filter in order to deal with this issue and improve localization accuracy. Test results proved that the proposed technique has a higher localization accuracy than DV-Distance by up to 50% and by up to 18% when compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms cited above and other DV-Hop-based localization methods. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper introduces a novel model of a fully adaptive cognitive radar jamming approach, designed for the purpose of countering modern cognitive radars. Cognitive radar systems have been widely used in modern electromagnetic warfare and also serve as an effective counter to traditional jamming techniques. Cognitive jamming makes use of machine learning and adaptive signal processing strategies to dynamically adapt jamming strategies in response to real-time changes in target radar transmissions. The proposed model may be used to incorporate advanced reinforcement learning algorithms, signal feature extraction techniques, and waveform optimization techniques to create a cohesive system that can optimize jamming strategies with minimal prior knowledge of the electromagnetic environment. The paper also discusses the state-of-the-art in cognitive radar jamming technologies, and their efficiency in the face of intelligent radar equipped with advanced anti-jamming measures. Furthermore, it addresses current challenges and future directions in the field with considerations for defense and security applications. © 2024 IEEE.

The developments reported in this paper are devoted to the dynamic scheduling of rail transport systems. In this context, our study focuses on implementing an algorithm for solving railway planning with predictable or unexpected demands. The system modeling process uses P-time stochastic Petri nets. In order to improve the efficiency and punctuality of rail transport. A method for minimizing disruptions by managing maintenance is proposed. The paper's contribution is a scheduling algorithm that prioritizes maintenance tasks according to a dynamic criticality. This dynamic criterion incorporates real-time information provided by a supervisory rail system layer (a SCADA system). The STPN is used for modeling system operation. It supplies a mathematical framework for disturbance detection and prognosis. The presented work constitutes a first step towards adapting the digital twin concepts for the maintenance of weakly instrumented railway infrastructures. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, the strain and vibration of the bridge cable and its compensation device were monitored using fiber optic grating (FBG) sensing technology on the Zhoushan-Daishan Bridge in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. During the monitoring period, the bridge experienced two typhoon events. The strain and vibration signals were analyzed. The results showed that the typhoon 'Muifa' had a greater impact on the Zhoushan-Daishan Bridge than typhoon 'Hinnamnor'. And there was no movement of the expansion compensation device during the monitoring period. © 2023 IEEE.

The aviation industry is growing rapidly, but due to inadequate airport surveillance technology, there have been incidents of UAV intruding into airports and birds striking aircraft in the clearance area. Existing airports use radar-based detection technology to monitor UAV and birds in the clearance area, and they cannot correctly identify the type and number of UAV and the size and number of birds. Based on this problem, this paper proposes a deformable DETR (DEtection TRansformer) based detection method for UAV and birds to assist airports to better supervise the clearance area and reduce safety hazards. In response to the small size of airport UAV and birds, we adopt a deformable DETR object detection method using multi-feature fusion to detect UAV and birds in the airport environment. The model has good detection performance with mAP of 75.2 and recall of 95.0%, which meets the airport's requirements for UAV and bird detection, as verified by the actual data collection. This method can help to improve surveillance methods within the clearance area of airports and can also provide technical support for the detection of small objects in other areas. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
