This paper presents a new technique for simultaneous traffic monitoring and law enforcement using a road-side rig head based on two line-scan cameras. As the vehicle travels across the vertical scanning lines, two images are formed and can be correlated with each other to determine the vehicle speed. Our first tests showed that the resulting videos are easily interpreted by computers in real-time and that the measures are both accurate (less than 1 % error) and stable. In addition to speed, the system is able to extract a broad range of traffic information, among others the vehicle size, acceleration and inter-vehicle distances. © 2006 IEEE.

A method is described to reproduce reflection properties at the surface of real objects using spectral images, which are often saturated because of the limited dynamic range of image detectors. Reflection components are separated into diffuse and specular reflection components based on the dichromatic model at 5-nm wavelength intervals between 380 nm and 780 nm for each pixel of the spectral images, and diffuse reflectance parameters are estimated during the separation. To estimate specular reflectance parameters, the Gaussian distribution function of the Torrance-Sparrow reflection model is transformed logarithmically to a linear form, and the unsaturated values of the specular reflection components are subjected to the least squares method. Experimental results with a real object demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method

The problem of blind source separation (BSS) from convolutive mixtures is often addressed using independent component analysis in the frequency domain. The separation performance with this approach degrades significantly when only a short amount of data is available, since the estimation of the separation system becomes inaccurate. In this paper we present a novel approach to the frequency domain BSS using frequency normalization. Under the conditions of almost sparse sources and of dominant direct path in the mixing systems, we show that the new approach provides better performance than the conventional one when the amount of available data is small

A new approach to time-frequency analysis of radar echo responses obtained from moving objects is represented. The suggested approach is based on the extraction of phase-coupled harmonics from time-varying bispectrum estimates of transient sequences separated from the total radar backscattered signal by a sliding window. A coherent, homodyne, and continuous-wave radar has been employed for measuring multi-component, non-stationary, and nonlinear frequency modulated signals backscattered by moving objects. The experimental study underpinned with the theoretical assumptions of the suggested approach has demonstrated clean recovery of time-varying phase-coupled frequencies for test targets like a swinging metallic sphere or a walking human. The obtained time-frequency distributions of phase-coupled harmonics can be recommended as a new informaHon feature in automatic radar target recognition systems.

One research direction to make computers become more active machines is to use audio input with far-field omni-directional microphones, these being required to face the acoustics problem of the meeting scenario. This topic is not only interesting from an artificial listener point-of-view, but also as one of the hottest topics in searchable media. In this paper two noise suppression methods for real meeting audio are evaluated. Because of the usage of hands-free microphones in a meeting environment, the reverberation of meeting rooms and background noise sources such as projector, computer fan have huge impact on speech quality. Two denoising methods, based on statistical Wavelet filtration and short-time Fourier transform are discussed and evaluated. Whilst the quantile technique is suitable for estimating stationary noise (beamer, computer fan), non-stationary sources (closing door, chair movement) can be handled by recursive structure and adaptive temporal gain of the statistical filtration method. Besides, frequency non-linear gain can remove colored noise effectively. The proposed noise reduction methods are evaluated with speaker localizing application applied on the meeting database of the Mistral project. The results show the pros and cons of each method applied on the meeting database.

The last technological advances of multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) have brought significant improvements in image quality and consequently diagnostic performance. It opens, in particular, new perspectives for the coronary artery disease assessment. This paper presents a method for the coronary artery extraction and the lesion quantification. It makes use of a two stage-process. A tracking algorithm of the vascular structure, based on a 3D geometric moment operator, is first applied to estimate the vessel central axis location and its local diameter. It led to the extraction of the overall coronary tree. A deformable model technique, using a modified version of 3D level set technique, is then run on pathological vascular segments to refine the delineation of the wall and parietal calcifications. Parameters such as the narrowing or enlargement ratio of the vascular lumen, the minimum/maximum areas and the percent-area stenosis or aneurysm, are then computed for diagnosis purpose. The first method was submitted to a clinical evaluation on six data sets that showed good sensitivity and specificity performances. The second one was validated by experts, through a visual inspection of 2D cross-sections and volume rendering. © 2007 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

A DSP/FPGA-based parallel architecture oriented to real-time image processing applications is presented. The architecture is structured with high performance DSPs interconnected by FPGA. Within FPGA a FIFO interconnection network and the specific data communication protocol are implemented, which interconnect 3 DSPs (TMS320C6414) effectively. The measured performances in the prototype with the proposed parallel architecture, including inter-DSP data communication performance and system computing capacity, show high data transfer bandwidth (up to 400 Mbytes/s) with low latency as well as high image processing performance, which achieve a good balance for parallel image processing

The requirement of algorithm for detecting small target in infrared image sequences is not only a high rate to identify the true target and a low false alarm rate, but also the computation efficiency. By employing the selective attention mechanism, biological visual system can interpret a complex incoming image in real time with limited hardware resources. Much evidence has suggested that the biological visual system processes information in a serial strategy which rapidly selects a small relevant region in scene for further complex and time consuming analysis. In this paper, a two component computation scheme is proposed to detect dim targets in infrared image sequences. In the first process stage, an efficient method is applied to extract the potential targets which are further identified in second phase, the true targets are detected, and the spurious objects are rejected. The attention-based approach reduces the computation complexity, while the other performance aspects are not traded off. Experimental results indicate that the proposed extraction and recognition modules exhibit excellent performance of detecting small target in infrared image sequences, especially in process speed aspect.
