Shape is one of the salient features of visual content and can be used in visual information retrieval. Radius vector function for star-shaped objects is available. A modified radius-vector function for both types of shapes-star shaped, and non-star shaped is presented. The center of gravity is selected as the reference point. The corner points are marked as the nodes. Normalized vectors are calculated from the reference point to the corner nodes. The normalized vectors are arranged in ascending order, and the Euclidean distance of the query object with database objects is used for shape matching criteria. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Wavelet image denoising has been well acknowledged as an important method of denoising in image processing. This paper describers a new method for the suppression of noise in image by fusing the wavelet denoising technique with support vector regression (SVR). Based on the least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM), a new denoising operators used in the wavelet domain are obtained. Simulated noise images are used to evaluate the denoising performance of the proposed algorithm along with the other wavelet-based denoising algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed denoising method outperforms standard wavelet denoising techniques in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio and the prevented edge information in most cases. It also achieves better performance than the median filter.

The problem of estimating information symbols transmitted through nonGaussian multipath CDMA wireless channels with a phased array is considered. First, we propose a new robust estimator based on the Huber's minimax robust estimation theory. A strong advantage of the proposed robust algorithm is a decreased sensitivity of the estimates with respect to an actually unknown distribution of random noises and interferences. Then, we analyze the estimation accuracy of DOA and information signals by Monte Carlo simulation of this robust algorithm in multipath scenario.

This paper presents a method for the detection of small objects from the infrared images. The detection is performed on the intensity surface well fitted by the cubic facet model. The small target energy distribution presents as a convex surface on the image intensity surface and the target center is the maximal extremum points of the convex surface. According to the extremum theory, the possible small target position is analytically determined by directly convolving the original image with the derivative operators deduced from the bivariate cubic function. With the available coarse target locations, the potential target is separated from the background by examining the intensity features of the target cluster. Experimental results on the sample infrared images demonstrate the proposed algorithm provides a robust and efficient performance.

Segmentation and clustering of infrared small target images in a sky or sea-sky background is considered in this paper, which is the preprocessing part of the detection and recognition of the moving small targets in an infrared image sequence. The infrared image intensity surface is well fitted by the least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM), and then the maximum extremum points are detected on the well fitted intensity surface by convolving the image with the second order directional derivative operators deduced from the mapped LS-SVM with mixtures of kernels. With the coarse locations, the possible targets are extracted by the clustering analysis. The computer experiments are carried out for the real and simulated sky and sea-sky infrared images. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed approach is effective.

This paper aims at resolving overlapped multipaths. A fast high resolution overlapping delay estimation technique is proposed. The method first uses a new correlation-based estimation function to eliminate the effect on estimation error caused by complex amplitude phase, then uses the FFT transform and deconvolution to convert the delay estimation problem to a sinusoid frequency estimation problem. Finally, the Pisarenko's harmonic retrieval (PHR) and TLS-SVD (total least squares singular value decomposition)-based algorithm is adopted to estimate the overlapped delay. The computer simulations show that the proposed method produces rapid, high resolution time delay estimations.

As a communication interface translating brain activities into a control signal for devices like computers, brain-computer interfaces (BCI) have received more and more attentions in recent years due to many potential applications. It is well known that preprocessing (e.g., filtering, etc.) of EEG signals plays an important role in EEG based BCI. In this paper, a sparse factorization approach is presented as a new kind of preprocessing method for BCI. Next, we define power feature vectors related to /spl mu/ and /spl beta/ frequency bands of these components, and use regularized Fisher discriminant method for classification. Our offline analysis based on the data of a cursor control experiment shows that sparse factorization preprocessing can improve considerably accuracy rate in comparison to PCA or ICA preprocessing.

This paper proposes a novel fast architecture for a 2D discrete wavelet transform by using a lifting scheme, Parallel and embedded decimation techniques are employed to optimize the architecture, which is mainly composed of two horizontal filter modules and one vertical filter module, working in parallel and pipeline fashion with 100% hardware utilization. The architecture is designed to generate two outputs in one working clock cycle, with every two subbands coefficients alternately. The total time for computing J levels of decomposition for an N/spl times/N image is approximately 2N/sup 2/(1-4/sup -J/)/3 clock cycles. In comparison with the other devices reported in previous literature, the design has many advantages including lower hardware complexity and area and power efficiency. The design is also fast, regular and simple, as well as well suited for VLSI implementation.

A new parallel-based lifting algorithm (PBLA) for the 9/7 filters, exploring the parallelism of arithmetic operations in each lifting step, was proposed in this paper. It shortened significantly the critical path of computation, and resulted in a fast VLSI implementation architecture. In comparison with the conventional lifting algorithm based implementation (CLABI), the latency is reduced by more than half from (4T/sub m/ + 8T/sub a/) to (T/sub m/ + 4T/sub a/), which is competitive to that of convolution based implementation CBI, and can be further reduced to Tm by inserting 3 stages of pipeline. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed architecture has good performances in both speed and area.

Unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are identified as an integral part of future military forces. The coordinated route-planning problems of UAV team with various architectures are addressed in the framework of game theory. A two-stage route planner has been proposed, which combines various game models and the concept of evolutionary computation and is compatible with the cooperative/competitive nature envisioned for UAV team. Our route planner can handle different kinds of mission constraints in hierarchical style. Potential routes of each vehicle form their own sub-population, and evolve only in their own sub-population, while the cooperation and competition among UAVs are reflected by the definition of fitness function. Experimental results show the feasibility of generating the coordinated routes for UAV team using game theory methods.
