Autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) navigation and localization is crucial and challenging in Global Positioning System-denied environments. AUV carrying synthetic aperture sonars (SASs) can provide precise motion estimation of the platforms. This study focuses on enhancing the performance of AUV localization using dual-sided SASs. The two-dimensional velocities of AUV are estimated using dual-sided SAS echoes. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is then adopted for dead reckoning using the estimated velocities. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has better localization accuracy than that of the Doppler velocity log (DVL). © 2021 IEEE.

The application of deep learning to fast radar data processing has important significance. The effectiveness of complex deep neural networks (CDNNs) has recently been demonstrated, and complex networks are important for processing complex data because they have the ability to handle phases. And the complex-valued activation function introduces a nonlinear transformation to the network, which has a great potential to improve the network performance. In this paper, we test the feasibility of CDNNs and the effect of different activation functions in the framework of complex networks under the goal of retaining more phase information. In particular, we propose a new complex-valued activation RℂReLU based on RℂeLu and test its performance in a classification and auto-encoder context. Finally, we perform radar imaging reconstruction by different activation functions in complex networks, and the results show that RℂReLU is more suitable for processing radar data in CDNNs.

A Parallel Read-Write Circuit With Fast Amplitude-Adaptive Matching Scheme to Memristor Crossbar Array

Memristor crossbar array (MCA) is a computing-in-memory (CIM) module for computational acceleration. However, conventional read-write (R-W) circuits for MCA rely heavily on external components and have shortcoming in long writing times. To address these issues, we propose a parallel R-W circuit with a fast amplitude-adaptive matching (AAM) scheme. The fast AAM scheme is designed to accelerate time of writing memristors in MCA by adaptively adjusting the writing voltage to match an optimal amplitude. The architecture of parallel R-W circuit are outlined with the implementation of R-W processes. The design principles of parallel R-W unit, fast AAM unit, and associated control logic are described for analyzing their functions within the circuit. By integrating the parallel R-W circuit with MCA, a computing block is leveraged in a neural network for classification tasks. The experimental results demonstrate that the neural network with multiple computing blocks maintains high accuracy across various datasets (over 80%). Furthermore, the proposed AAM scheme achieves an average 54% reduction in writing time compared to that one without AAM scheme. Compared to the pulse-width scheme, the parallel R-W circuit exhibits an average 3.05× speedup in adjusting a 5×5 MCA, and the speedup efficiency is higher as the increases of MCA size. © 2025 IEEE.

T-TIME: Test-Time Information Maximization Ensemble for Plug-and-Play BCIs

Objective: An electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) enables direct communication between the human brain and a computer. Due to individual differences and non-stationarity of EEG signals, such BCIs usually require a subject-specific calibration session before each use, which is time-consuming and user-unfriendly. Transfer learning (TL) has been proposed to shorten or eliminate this calibration, but existing TL approaches mainly consider offline settings, where all unlabeled EEG trials from the new user are available. Methods: This paper proposes Test-Time Information Maximization Ensemble (T-TIME) to accommodate the most challenging online TL scenario, where unlabeled EEG data from the new user arrive in a stream, and immediate classification is performed. T-TIME initializes multiple classifiers from the aligned source data. When an unlabeled test EEG trial arrives, T-TIME first predicts its labels using ensemble learning, and then updates each classifier by conditional entropy minimization and adaptive marginal distribution regularization. Our code is publicized. Results: Extensive experiments on three public motor imagery based BCI datasets demonstrated that T-TIME outperformed about 20 classical and state-of-the-art TL approaches. Significance: To our knowledge, this is the first work on test time adaptation for calibration-free EEG-based BCIs, making plug-and-play BCIs possible. © 2024, CC BY.

The relative-posture-fixed human following is critical for the human-robot interaction and cooperation in daily scenes such as domestic service and healthcare. However, few of previous researches have discussed the difficulties faced by mobile robots in the real world, including the limitation of sensing range and hindrance from obstacles. For practicality, in this paper we investigate the relative-posture-fixed following control with collision avoidance and visibility constraints. The control task is formulated as a receding-horizon optimization problem and solved under the Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) framework, while an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based human trajectory predict algorithm is integrated into the robot controller. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified in a simulation, and the results demonstrate a promising performance of our controller for the human-following task in complicated environments.

This work presents a high isolation UWB-MIMO antenna with a bandwidth up to 8.6 GHz based on a Minkowski fractal structure. The proposed antenna is fed by microstrip and comprises two orthogonal monopole antennas, which delivers a decent isolation effect. Moreover, the ground is designed as two separated blocks with an I-shaped branch for improving the isolation degree between the units. The resultant isolation degree of this antenna is greater than 25 dB. Besides, the electromagnetic interference in the partial frequency band (such as Wi-Max band (3.45–4.45 GHz), WLAN band (5.1– 5.8 GHz), and X-band (7.25–7.75 GHz)) is further prevented through etching a split-ring resonator (SRR) and C-slot on the unit. The antenna reflection coefficient of the UWB-MIMO antenna at the notch is 3.5 dB, which indicates that the antenna has a conspicuousness anti-interference effect. Through the above judicious design, the proposed UWB-MIMO antenna possesses a relative bandwidth of 113% (up to 8.6 GHz). The envelope correlation coefficient between antenna units is less than 0.005, and the antenna radiation efficiency is up to 80%. The results indicate that the proposed MIMO antenna meets UWB applications. © 2021, Electromagnetics Academy. All rights reserved.

The evolution of embedded systems has demonstrated their reliability as a solution for monitoring and controlling industrial systems, particularly in renewable energy conversion systems like photovoltaic (PV) energy. The increasing adoption of PV systems highlights the critical need for effective fault diagnosis to ensure their reliable operation. In this paper, we present a novel fault diagnosis approach utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks optimized through Bayesian optimization techniques. Our methodology is implemented on a Raspberry Pi platform, demonstrating the feasibility of deploying sophisticated fault diagnosis algorithms in resource-constrained environments. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach to accurately diagnose faults in grid-connected photovoltaic systems, thereby improving the reliability and efficiency of integrated environmental monitoring *** obtained results highlight the potential of combining advanced deep learning techniques with embedded systems to address complex diagnostic challenges, as demonstrated by achieving a 100% accuracy rate.

Obtaining accurate and effective information for drug molecules is a crucial and challenging task, which relies on high-quality chemical knowledge. However, chemical knowledge has been accumulated over the past 100 years from various regions, laboratories, and experimental purposes, which contains a lot of noise and inconsistency, leading to the out-of-distribution (OOD) problem. OOD may results in weak robustness and unsatisfied performance. In order to solve OOD learning problem with noise, a novel benchmark: ADMEOOD is proposed, which is a systematic OOD dataset curator and specifically designed for drug property prediction. ADMEOOD screens 27 Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion (ADME) drug properties from Chembl and relevant literature. This paper explicitly make distinctions between two kinds of OOD data shifts: Noise Shift and Concept Conflict Drift (CCD). Overall, ADME contains 6 domain annotations combined with noise, CCD and no shifts, resulting in 18 different splits in total. ADMEOOD provides performance results on a variety of SOTA OOD models. The results demonstrate a significant difference performance between in-distribution and OOD data. Moreover, Empirical Risk Minimization and other models exhibit distinct trends in different domains and measurement types. Introduction: There were more than 1,276,106 new cases of prostate cancer (PC) in 2018 worldwide (GLOBOCAN). Early and precise diagnosis leads to cure chances up to 90%. Digital rectal examination and PSA serum levels are employed for prostate cancer screening. If both exams are suspicious for cancer, the patient will be submitted to a prostate biopsy. Histological diagnosis and grading are crucial to the proper manage of the patients and are not always easy to evaluate, demanding experience of pathologists. To test the possibility to adopt artificial intelligent to diagnose PC, we studied a set of prostate biopsy sample images that were input to a specifically constructed convolutional neural network. Purpose: Evaluate the potential of the convolutional neural network for the classification of cancer and non-cancer patches extracted from prostate biopsy images. Methods: Thirty-two prostate cancer biopsy images were obtained and reviewed by a single uropathologist and then transformed into 2594 fragments to feed the CNN. The methodology has been divided into clinical approaches—to extract patches—and computational approaches—the CNN implementation. Results: The k-fold three-way cross-validation method was used, resulting in a 98.3% output accuracy in distinguishing cancer from non-cancer. Conclusion: The presented method proved to be robust and trustworthy comparing with an expert pathologist report. © 2020, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.
