Fault detection and identification for a class of nonlinear systems with model uncertainty

In this paper, we present a novel fault detection and identification (FDI) scheme for a class of nonlinear systems with model uncertainty. At the heart of this approach is an on-line approximator, referred to as fault tracking approximator (FTA). Differently from the other approximators, the FTA uses iterative algorithms to detect and identify nonlinear system faults, even in the presence of model uncertainty, which is motivated by predictive control theory and iterative learning control theory. The FTA can simultaneously detect and identify the shape and magnitude of the faults. The rigorous stability analysis and fault tracking properties of the FTA are also proved. Finally, two examples are given to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The integration of cognitive radio (CR) into satellite networks is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance the efficiency of radio spectrum. This paper investigates the ergodic capacity of a multiple antenna cognitive satellite terrestrial network, where the secondary terrestrial system can coexist with the primary satellite system as long as the interference imposed from the secondary user (SU) to the primary user (PU) is below a predefined threshold. Specifically, the Meijer-G function based analytical expression for the ergodic capacity of the secondary network is derived, which not only provides an efficient means to evaluate the system performance but also characterize the impact of various channel parameters on the network. Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate the validity of the theoretical analysis.

Human salience of pedestrians images is distinctive and has been shown importantly in person re-identification (or pedestrians identification) problem. Thus, how to obtain the salient area of pedestrian images is important for this salience based pedestrians identification problem. In this paper, we first show that this kind of salient area detection can be formulated as a kind of outlier detection problem, and then propose a novel unsupervised salience learning method using a local outlier-detection technique for person re-identification task. The main feature of the proposed salience computation method is that it exploits both distance and density information simultaneously. Experimental results on several datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed salience based person re-identification method. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

We report a simple model of two drive-response-type coupled chaotic oscillators, where the response system copies the nonlinearity of the driver system. It leads to a coherent motion of the trajectories of the coupled systems that establishes a constant separating distance in time between the driver and the response attractors, and their distance depends upon the initial state. The coupled system responds to external obstacles, modeled by short-duration pulses acting either on the driver or the response system, by a coherent shifting of the distance, and it is able to readjust their distance as and when necessary via mutual exchange of feedback information. We confirm these behaviors with examples of a jerk system, the paradigmatic Rössler system, a tunnel diode system and a Josephson junction–based jerk system, analytically, to an extent, and mostly numerically.

We present a scheme for realizing passive quantum key distribution with heralded single-photon sources. In this scheme, the idler light from the parametric down-conversion process is split into two parts and sent into two local detectors individually. Then all the clicking and nonclicking events are used to herald the arrival and nonarrival of the signal light. As a result, a precise estimation of the behavior of the single-photon pulses can be achieved without changing the light intensity. Furthermore, we compare our scheme with other existing methods with the Bennett-Brassard 1984 (BB84) protocol through numerical simulations. Our simulations demonstrate that the performance of our scheme can greatly overcome other existing practical methods and approach very close to the asymptotic case of using infinite-decoy-state methods.

To regain mobility, stroke patients need to receive repetitive and intensive therapy. Robot-assisted rehabilitation is an active area of research. Cheap robotic leg rehabilitation devices should be developed to meet the demands and assist most patients. A low cost hip-knee exoskeleton prototype powered by pneumatic muscles was developed. On this basis, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) induced paralyzed muscles to realize ankle joint rehabilitation training. As both of pneumatic muscle and FES induced muscle possess highly nonlinear characteristics, a sliding control algorithm called Chattering mitigation Robust Variable Control (CRVC) was applied to leg hybrid rehabilitation. The combination of exoskeleton and FES is a promising way to reduce the cost and the complexity of designing hip-knee-ankle exoskeleton. The proposed hybrid method is verified by treadmill-based gait training experiments.

Capillaries play a crucial role in the microcircu-latory system by exchanging metabolic substrates and waste products between blood and various tissues. The behavior of capillaries is affiliated with the number of capillaries per unit volume of tissue. Among the various noninvasive techniques available for analyzing skin microcirculation, nailfold capillaroscopy is considered to be a simple and easy-to-perform technique that allows a direct in-vivo visualization of the capillary network. Capillary density is one of the most important parameters in the studies involving capillaroscopy images. Capillary density in most of studies is defined as the number of capillaries in one millimeter span of the distal row in each finger or toe. This definition is silent about counting or excluding the number of capillary with different shapes. However, there is no single standard for counting the number of capillaries in a span of one millimeter. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for determining the nailfold capillary density. This method is a modified combination of two existing techniques: the direct observation and the 90° method. Compared to the two existing approaches, the proposed method is more straightforward and easy to use for cases in which the capillaries have different shapes and sizes. Through different examples, we have shown how this method can be used to select the apex point of capillary and subsequently count the number of capillaries with several papillae.

Complex approximated message passing (CAMP) is an iterative recovery algorithm for L1 regularization reconstruction which can achieve sparse and non-sparse estimations of original signal simultaneously. This paper demonstrates a CAMP-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image regularization reconstruction method along with a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection via the output non-sparse image of CAMP iterative algorithm. Compared with iterative thresholding algorithm (ITA) and orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), the conventional L 1 regularization reconstruction techniques, it not only can improve SAR image performance, but also its non-sparse estimation retains a similar background statistical distribution as conventional matched filtering (MF)-based techniques, which can be used for CFAR detection efficiently. Simulated and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the designed CFAR detector for the CAMP reconstructed SAR image.

A multi-agent coordinated planning approach for deadline required emergency response tasks

This study investigates the emergency decision-making problem in a multi-agent system. Departments are modeled as agents to perform coordinated planning to obtain a global action plan with a short execution time constrained by a prescribed deadline. A novel multi-agent planning approach is proposed to coordinate for the solution among agents in the system. The approach consists of two stages. For the first stage, a coordinated planning and scheduling method is designed to generate a candidate global action plan. In this plan, durative actions are assigned to proper time intervals with the consideration of temporal relationships among agents. For the second stage, a coordination mechanism based on local heuristics is proposed to reduce the global time cost of the candidate plan to satisfy the deadline. An experimental study of emergency evacuation problem is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach. © 2015 The Institution of Engineering and technology.

There is evidence for a beneficial effect of aerobic exercise on cognition, but underlying mechanisms are unclear. In this study, we test the hypothesis that aerobic exercise increases cerebral blood flow (CBF) in patients with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). This study is a multicenter single-blind randomized controlled trial among 80 patients with VCI. Most important inclusion criteria are a diagnosis of VCI with Mini-Mental State Examination ≥22 and Clinical Dementia Rating ≤0.5. Participants are randomized into an aerobic exercise group or a control group. The aerobic exercise program aims to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and takes 14 weeks, with a frequency of three times a week. Participants are provided with a bicycle ergometer at home. The control group receives two information meetings. Primary outcome measure is change in CBF. We expect this study to provide insight into the potential mechanism by which aerobic exercise improves hemodynamic status. © 2017 The Authors
