Scale-space line curvature estimation for straight line and circle detection

A scale-space algorithm for estimating the local curvature of lines (edges or isolines) is presented. Two variants of edge curvature estimation based on differential invariants are suggested and compared. The first variant uses the edge curvature formula derived in the paper and the second is based on image preprocessing, which allows one to use the isoline curvature formula for edge curvature estimation. An analysis of scale selection needed to reach a desired accuracy is presented. Also, noise influence analysis has been performed. The application of curvature estimation to detection of straight lines and circles is suggested and implemented. Curvature information usage in parametric curve detection speeds up search algorithms and makes the results more stable. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

A variant of spiking neural P systems was recently investigated by the authors, using astrocytes that have excitatory and inhibitory influence on synapses. In this work, we consider this system in the non-synchronized (i.e., asynchronous) mode: in any step, when a neuron is enabled, it is not obligatorily fired, making a global clock dispensable. It is proved that asynchronous spiking neural P systems with astrocytes are universal (when using extended rules). The construction is uniform in the sense that the form of the modules used is independent of the simulated register machine. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In the process of billet detection and recognition, the self-adaptability research of billet character segmentation in the complex scene is a highly complicated intelligence problem. On account of a good many of factors, such as the uneven ends of billet, the rusty billets, the non-standard printed characters and so on, the irregular characters at ends of steel billet may be connected and broken. Improper segmentation of connected and broken characters will lead the characters distorted directly and then impact on the recognition results. In view of these complex factors, a segmentation algorithm based on self- adaptability decision is proposed to improve the segmentation self-adaptability in this paper. The segmentation experimental results show that the proposed algorithm divides the billet characters in the complex scene accurately and improves the self-adaptability of character segmentation.

Character information is hard to detect in billet scene images by CCD camera. In this paper, we present a method for detection of billet characters from measurements of recursive segmented image. This recursive segmented method can be used in a wide variety of billet scenes. According to high temperature and complex scene in the rolling line, we use an effective clustering and projection characteristics to determine the terminal condition of recursive segmentation. Then we can label character candidate regions in turn by this effective characteristics, and select the regions we want to achieve. The experiments show that this method makes full use of the characteristics of region and clustering. It can improve the quality of detection, and the detection result meets the need of practical application.

This paper presents a novel data-adaptive anisotropic filtering technique built on top of an iterative scheme. This new technique can preserve the original significant structures while suppressing noises to the largest extent. To achieve this goal, dominant orientation information of all gradients is used to control the local kernel adaptively. This results in elongated and elliptical contours spread along the directions of the local edge structure. With these locally adapted kernels, the smoothing is mostly effective along the edges, rather than across them. Therefore details in the original input can be preserved. The performance of the proposed data-adaptive anisotropic filter together with its iterative scheme are compared with the conventional Gaussian filter, anisotropic diffusion filter, the structure-adaptive anisotropic filter, and the iterative kernel regression scheme. The experimental results on both simulated Gaussian and Poission noisy images indicate that the proposed method performs the best, and the iterative scheme can significantly improve the performance of the noise suppressing while delivering high computation efficiency. © 2012 IEEE.

A time-based nested partition （NP） approach is proposed to solve resource-constrained project scheduling problem （RCPSP） in this paper. In iteration, one activity is selected as the base point of which the finish time interval calculated by CPM is divided into two parts to form two subregions on the basis of the promising region of the last iteration. Then sampling is taken in both subregions and the surrounding region to determine the promising region and aggregate the other as the surrounding region of this iteration so that whether the backtracking or the moving operation being performed is determined. Double justification is also performed in iteration to improve the results. The results of numerical tests on PSPLIB show the effectiveness and time-efficient of the proposed NP method.

This paper is concerned with an application of ICA for a possible improvement of iris recognition by replying to the question: does ICA perform well for such purpose? To achieve this, the hypotheses and the theoretical concepts of ICA methods used are handled so that coherence with iris authentication application is guaranteed. Our contribution is not in the development of new theoretical concepts of ICA but it is in adapting its basic ideas for our application. Also, it consists of deploying its powerful and its efficiency for iris recognition, and consequently;it's potential to embed it on smart cards for increasing application domains of secure biometric-based individual identification systems. We have developed a comparative study between the implemented ICA algorithms and other recent and popular methods of iris recognition. We have demonstrated our experimental results using some mathematical criteria. Three different subsets of international certified CASIA iris image databases are used for testing the different implemented methods. The conclusion of such comparative study is that the ICA-based approaches are more effective and more practical than other existing methods. © 2012 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present an inexpensive system for diverless video capture and fast image stitching of image frames for rapid reef assessment of shallow coral reefs. Our system has two main components: 1) Teardrop, a boat-towable, winged hull apparatus designed to house a commercial digital camera, and 2) a mosaicking algorithm to stitch the coral reef video into mosaics for further appreciation and analysis. The captured reef video is then separated into image frames which are to be stitched sequentially using Fast image Labeling. The overlap between image frames is estimated using Single-Step DFT, an efficient sub-pixel estimation algorithm. The estimated overlap is used to compute for the area to be added to the mosaic space. The overlapping section between succeeding image-pairs are stitched along a seam determined by a minimal-cost path using dynamic programming. The visibility of the seam boundaries is further minimized by utilizing blending on multi-resolution splines. Experimental results on automated reef mosaics creation from actual coral reef video taken using Teardrop shows the performance of the system described. The main contribution of this work is the demonstration of a rapid reef visualization system using a diverless system and commercially available, non-research-grade imaging equipment. © 2012 IEEE.
