Facial expression recognition plays a key role in promoting the development of comprehensive intelligence and building friendly human-computer interaction. Due to the interference of feature noise in expression data, the lightweight facial expression recognition model with fewer parameters is difficult to learn more expression features through simple training, which limits the improvement of its recognition performance. An efficient facial expression recognition network based on Spot-adaptive Knowledge Distillation is proposed in this paper. Inspired by VoVNetV2, the network designed in this paper is lightweightly improved using Depthwise Separable Convolution and the parameter-free SimAM attention mechanism, reducing the number of parameters to 0.21 M. To further improve the recognition accuracy of the model, Spot-adaptive Knowledge Distillation is employed to improve the characterization ability of the model. The recognition accuracies of the student network designed in this paper on the KDEF and RAF-DB datasets are 93.05% and 81.17% respectively after spot-adaptive distillation. © 2025 IEEE.

Privacy-preserving distributed estimation for interconnected dynamic systems

This paper investigates the problem of privacy protection in distributed estimation for interconnected dynamic systems. The exchange of information between subsystems during weighted sum aggregation poses significant privacy risks to distributed estimation. To address these concerns, we propose a noise contamination mechanism for private matrix–vector multiplication and private weighted sum aggregation. This mechanism decomposes the matrix into two column-rank-deficient matrices and injects noises derived from their null spaces to protect the confidentiality of the vector during the matrix–vector multiplication. Several conditions are established to ensure that the mechanism achieves complete confidentiality. Subsequently, we design a double-layer encryption scheme for private weighted sum aggregation with hidden weights, incorporating private matrix–vector multiplication and the Paillier cryptosystem. Furthermore, we develop privacy-preserving distributed estimators for interconnected dynamic systems using the proposed aggregation schemes. Our analysis demonstrates that both subsystems and their distributed estimators achieve effective privacy protection. Finally, an illustrative example is provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Design and Performance Analysis of a Series-Parallel Self-Aligning Index Finger Exoskeleton

Hand exoskeletons have become increasingly crucial for the rehabilitation of hand function, as relevant studies have shown that using the exoskeletons to assist in rehabilitation training can improve hand motor function. However, developing a human-robot kinematic compatibility exoskeleton while providing sufficient assistance torque is still a challenge. This paper develops a series-parallel self-aligning index finger exoskeleton to assist the index finger in flexion/extension and adduction/abduction training. A series-parallel mechanism driven by two motors simultaneously was proposed for the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, which can ensure human-robot joint axes self-alignment and increase the joint assistance torque. A kinematic compatibility analysis method was proposed, and the kinematic compatibility of the series-parallel mechanism was analyzed. The degrees of freedom and forward kinematics of the proposed mechanism were analyzed, and its workspace was calculated, which results show that the motion range of the MCP joint can meet the grasping training requirements. Preliminary experiments were carried out, and the results indicate that the motion trajectory coefficients of the marker points at the MCP, PIP, and DIP joints averaged for all subjects with and without the proposed exoskeleton are 0.993, 0.956, and 0.939, respectively, which can verify the kinematic transparency of the proposed mechanism. The assistance torque generated by the proposed mechanism on the MCP joint can meet the joint assistance torque requirements. In a word, the proposed exoskeleton can achieve flexion/extension and adduction/abduction training, human-robot joint axes self-alignment, and provide sufficient assistance torque. © 2016 IEEE.

A Velocity Tracking Approach Based on Neural Networks for a Multimodal Wheel-Legged Composite Gait on a Parallel Structure Robot

Parallel-legged robots are favored by many researchers due to their potent environmental adaptability and load capacity. However, the work efficiency of the parallel leg structure is always confined due to its uptight workspace and extremely uneven force distributed among actuators. Therefore, this article proposes a new type of wheel-legged composite gait for the parallel structure, inspired by the characteristic of variation in the pitch angle of the foot-end when a human walks. First, the kinematic inverse solution of the wheel-legged composite gait is derived, where the reverse rotation of the wheel alleviates the slipping phenomenon of the foot-end on stance stage in humanoid gait from the kinematic level. Meanwhile, numerical simulation and experiments have verified that the proposed gait can enlarge the workspace of a single leg for 25.4% and alleviate the maximum force on the actuators for 16.4% minimizing actuator wear. Besides, a legged motion speed tracking approach is implemented for dynamics of the wheel-legged composite gait. Among them, a whole body dynamics model is constructed to adjust the neural network weights enabling real-time adjustment of incremental proportion–integration–differentiation control parameters based on the foot longitudinal force, to scale up its control efficiency. Finally, to ameliorate the issue of limited contact friction between the robot and the ground, an encoding approach to identify the sliding state of the robot's foot-end in the X-Y plane has been proposed. This approach adaptively modifies both the longitudinal force threshold of the foot-end and the desired linear velocity of the robot body. These adjustments are guided by specific control rules, which aim to enhance the accuracy of speed tracking during legged motion across varying terrains. The resulting linear and yaw velocity steady errors are constrained to 0.05 m/s and 0.012 rad/s, respectively. © 1996-2012 IEEE.

Infrared target detection technology is one of the most key technologies of current detection systems, which is not only applied to automatic navigation, security protection and surveillance devices in daily life, but also widely used in the military. However, due to the influence of complex background, infrared detection system is often difficult to achieve accurate and fast detection of small targets, so the current small target detection methods still need to be improved. In this paper, an effective algorithm is proposed by complementally combining local contrast and first-order directional derivative algorithms, incorporating human visual characteristics for enhancement. Then according to the different characteristics of the background and small targets in infrared images, for the problem of excessive redundant information in infrared weak small target images, the high real-time and low leakage rate of LCM is used to find out the information-rich suspicious blocks, and then the low false alarm rate of FODD is used to find out the targets in the suspicious area. Through a lot number of experiments, and comparing with a variety of other algorithms. The results show that the detection algorithm proposed in this paper is significantly better than other algorithms in terms of low false alarm rate and can maintain good real-time performance. © 2019 IEEE.

The sccheduling for pushing plan during the coking process critically affects the efficiency and stability of production. However, the complexity with mutiple-stage during production makes it difficult to design an efficient coke pushing plan. To address this issue, this paper proposes a scheduling method based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Firstly, the fuzzy c-means clustering is utilized to categorize actual operating conditions as either normal or abnormal, thereby facilitating the scheduling of pushing plan under disparate conditions. Subsequently, the scheduling problem for the pushing plan is transformed into a traveling salesman problem, and scheduling models under various conditions are established. Finally, to accelerate the convergence and enhance the algorithm's global search capability, an adaptive inertia adjustment strategy is employed to dynamically regulate the velocity and position of particles. The proposed method has been implemented in the coking process. Through the analysis of application results, the completion coefficient of pushing plan has been increased by 4.25%, demonstrating that the proposed has advantages in scheduling the pushing plan during the actual coking process. © 2025 IEEE.

The low manufacturing cost and fast response speed of pneumatic actuators have attracted widespread attention from researchers in the field of soft robotics. Biomimetic design, as one of the mainstream design concepts of pneumatic actuators, has provided researchers with a source of inspiration. Most existing actuators are based on biomimetic design. In this paper, a pneumatic soft actuator with a biomimetic worm-like design for crawling robots is proposed. This actuator is composed of multiple mesh-like air chambers, and its main parameters are optimized through finite element analysis, enabling it to perform various complex movements. Moreover, in most existing pneumatic actuators, the air source is supplied by air pumps, while the designed actuator in this paper is powered by chemical reactions. By controlling the types and ratios of raw materials, different chemical reactions occur, leading to periodic inhalation and exhalation, allowing the actuator to perform repetitive movements as intended. This driving method can effectively combine with the mechanical motion of the crawling robot, enhancing the autonomy and environmental adaptability of soft robots.

How to realize the high power factor, high efficiency, miniaturization and high power density of AC-DC converter is the key problem of battery charging applications. In this paper, an isolated AC-DC converter is proposed. The input voltage is rectified by the first stage AC-DC conversion, and the output is stabilized by the series resonant converter at the secondary stage. A sinusoidal modulation method is adopted to realize the constant current output characteristic independent of load. Then through the output current control loop and the PFC control loop, the constant current output and input high power factor are realized. The design of high switching frequency and resonant frequency provides conditions for high power density and miniaturization of converter design. Finally, the simulation of rated power of 960W was built by Matlab-simulink, which verified the rationality of the converter design. © 2025 IEEE.

Domain adaptation methods and appropriate feature extractors are usually applied to solve the problem that the variable working conditions of bearings affect the effectiveness of the fault diagnostic framework. However, the existing feature extractors are too complex to be deployed in real industries. In this paper, we propose a lightweight framework called improved depthwise separable convolution network (IDSCN) for the diagnosis of bearing faults in variable operating conditions. IDSCN is built on wavelet convolution and depthwise separable residual convolution (DSRC), where the wavelet convolution is used to extract frequency features from the source and target domains, and DSRC guarantees the performance of feature extraction with reduced parameters and computation. To minimise the distribution difference between the source and target domains, the local maximum mean difference is incorporated into the proposed framework. The performance of the proposed framework is validated on the Paderborn University dataset, involving a total of 6 transfer tasks. The experiment shows that the proposed framework achieves satisfactory results and outperforms other frameworks in bearing fault diagnosis.

With the continuous growth of the automobile trade, the inefficiency of traditional cargo transshipment in Roll-On/Roll-Off (RO/RO) terminals has become increasingly pronounced. As a result, the adoption of autonomous transportation robot (ATR) for the automatic handling of finished vehicles has seen significant growth. However, ATRs designed for this purpose face several limitations, including suboptimal mobility performance and the necessity for additional infrastructure to support their operation. This paper introduces a novel ATR that offers enhanced flexibility and operational capability. To further optimize the positioning of LiDAR, we develop a multi-stage LiDAR fusion algorithm for the precise localization of finished vehicles, incorporating an event-triggered decision-making approach to improve positioning accuracy. Based on the accurate positioning data, we propose a docking strategy consisting of two key phases: the approach phase and the docking phase. During the docking phase, an enhanced Model Predictive control (MPC) algorithm, integrated with a Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network, is designed to enable real-time adjustment of the robot's docking attitude. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated through real-world robot experimentals demonstrating its practical viability. © 2025
