This paper uses the wave equation to explain the torsional motion of the drill-string system. Solving the wave equation with the D'Alembert method, a neutral time-delay model of the drill-string system is obtained. The disturbance input, caused by the bit-rock interaction, is given consideration, and an equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) based controller is designed to mitigate the disturbance in the established model. In the actual drilling procedure, the system input time-delay increases as the length of the drill columns increases. If the influence of system input time-delay in the drilling procedure is ignored, it will most likely lead to the drill-string system instability and cause serious consequences. The essential contribution of this paper is the incorporation of input time-delay into the EID based control structure. Considering the system's input time-delay, the proposed model is more practical and has significant implications for stick-slip vibration assessment and control in drilling procedures.

This paper presents a distributed multi-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm. In order to achieve single-layer ring barrier coverage, a distributed single-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm that maximises the probability of monitoring is proposed. Considering the security risks of single-layer barrier coverage, a distributed adjustment mechanism between multiple layers of barriers is designed and combined with the single-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm to propose a distributed multi-layer ring barrier coverage algorithm. Furthermore, we present a theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm to demonstrate its effectiveness and necessity. Finally, our algorithm is verified by numerical simulation and experiment. Geomagnetic data is vital for predicting earthquakes and magnetic storms. In this regard, a new Bayesian exponential regularized tensor completion framework for sparse geomagnetic data, i.e. BERTC, is proposed to address this problem in the study. First, the spatiotemporal geomagnetic data is reshaped into a 3D tensor with days and hours that features random missing elements. Second, a Gibbs sampling algorithm is developed to achieve probabilistic inference on matrices' factors and corresponding parameters in this model. Thus, the sparse tensor can be gradually optimized to fill the missing entries during iterations. Third, an exponential regularizer is proposed to reduce oscillations before and after iterations to enhance imputation quality further. Finally, the derived factor matrices are aggregated from Gibbs sampling to complete the sparse tensor. Numerical geomagnetic datasets from 13 cities are employed, and extensive comparison experiments are conducted to evaluate the imputation performance of the BERTC. The results show the superiority of the proposed BERTC compared to the state-of-the-art methods in terms of imputation accuracy, with an approximate improvement of the imputation accuracy as no less than 20%.

Sample generation is an effective method to improve the performance of hyperspectral image classification by generating virtual samples for training sample expansion in the training process of classification. However, there are some defects existing in the previous sample generation methods including the lack of spatial information, the redundant generation and the damage of the original spectral components. In this paper, we propose conditional band selection generative adversarial net, named CBS-GAN, to handle this problem. Firstly, the band selection net of CBS-GAN is utilized to avoid redundant bands and keep original spectral information, then the generation net of CBS-GAN generates the spatial-spectral data blocks by selected bands for sample generation. The experiments of classification are also used to demonstrate the availability of virtual samples generated by our method. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Air quality data exhibit nonlinearity, sensitivity to environmental factors, and long-term dependencies. Numerous factors influence air quality, making accurate predictions based on a single-dimensional dataset impractical. This study proposes a method for urban air quality prediction that integrates wide-area spatiotemporal data, designed to address the unique characteristics of air quality datasets. First, relevant wide-area spatiotemporal data are selected, and their correlations with air quality are systematically analyzed. Second, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network-based Transformer model is utilized to capture the long-term dependencies in the air quality sequences. Finally, the model successfully generates hourly multi-step predictions for six air pollutants. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the method that relies on air quality data alone for multi-step air quality prediction.

L10-phase FePt is well known for its unusually robust perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) properties arising from strong conduction-electron spin-orbit coupling (SOC) with the Fe orbital moment. The strong PMA enables stable magnetic storage and memory devices with ultrahigh capacity. Meanwhile, SOC is also the premise of the recently discovered spin-orbit-torque (SOT) effect, which opens avenues for possible electrical manipulation of magnetization for L10-FePt. The bulk SOT of the L10-FePt single layer was discovered recently; this leads to the magnetization of L10-FePt reversibly switching on itself. However, deterministic SOT switching of bulk perpendicularly magnetized FePt magnets relies on an external magnetic field to break the symmetry. Here, the symmetry-breaking issue is resolved by interlayer exchange coupling, where the FePt layer is coupled with an in-plane magnetized NiFe layer through a TiN spacer layer. Furthermore, our device also presents memristive or gradual switching behaviors, even without an external field, offering the potential for constructing spin synapses and spin neurons for neuromorphic computing. An artificial neural network with high accuracy (∼91.17%) is realized based on the constructed synapses and neurons. Our work paves the way for field-free SOT switching of single bulk PMA magnets and their potential applications in neuromorphic computing.

Aiming at the problems containing complex working conditions, modeling difficulties and long-time delay of thermoelectric cooler temperature control system, an improved ADRC control method combining ADRC and Smith predictor is proposed in this paper. ADRC deals with the disturbances and uncertain dynamics in the system, SP compensates the time delay to improve the control performance. Compared with the traditional PID controller, the proposed control method has faster response speed and stronger anti-disturbance ability, meanwhile, overcomes the dependence of Smith predictor on object parameters to a certain extent. Through simulation and experimental verification, a good control effect is obtained, which provides a positive guidance of the related application of thermoelectric cooler.

Existing hand gesture recognition methods predominantly rely on a close-set assumption, which in essence limits the viewpoints, gesture categories, and hand shapes at test time to closely resemble those seen during training. This requirement is however rarely met in practice, as images are often captured from unconstrained viewpoints, with novel gestures and unseen hand shapes that can differ significantly from the training data. This motivates us to investigate an open-set hand gesture recognition problem, where hand gestures are still recognizable from unconstrained viewpoints, and novel gesture classes and hand shapes can be incrementally learned with just a few examples. To address this, we propose a viewpoint influence elimination network that extracts view-independent features, significantly improving performance in scenarios with unconstrained viewpoints. Moreover, a joint-weighted classification scheme is introduced to augment the cosine similarity metric for evaluating few-shot incremental learning of novel gestures and shapes. Finally, as existing hand gesture recognition datasets primarily adhere to the close-set assumption, a new hand gesture recognition dataset, OHG, is introduced in this paper, that includes a wide range of viewpoints, diverse gesture classes, and distinct hand shapes. Experimental hand gesture recognition results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach in both unconstrained viewpoint and few-shot incremental learning scenarios. In order to improve the dynamic performance of the underdriven crane system, an improved linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC) based on the new error was proposed. The improved LADRC takes the error value between the disturbance and its observed value multiplied by a coefficient as the basis for adjusting the linear extended state observer (LESO). The improved method has two advantages. Firstly, the new error can prevent the traditional LESO from choosing larger parameter adjustment disturbances, which will limit the performance of the observer. Secondly, the pole can be configured by adjusting the coefficient to obtain better dynamic characteristics. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment. The proposed method can effectively restrain the swing of the payload and it is robust to system parameters perturbation as well.

Dynamic facial expression recognition (DFER) in the wild has received widespread attention recently. There are complex factors such as face occlusion and pose variation in the wild. Facial expression recognition has a subtle competition between capturing local features of a human face and obtaining a global feature representation. This paper proposes an end-to-end DFER network GAT-Net based on the grid attention module and Transformer, which improves the robustness and accuracy of DFER in the wild. Specifically, GAT-Net is divided into two components: spatial feature extraction and temporal feature processing. The grid attention module of the spatial feature extraction component guides the network to pay attention to the local salient features of the face, which reduces the interference of field occlusion and non-frontal poses. The Transformer in the temporal feature processing component guides the network to learn the temporal relationship of high-level semantic features and the global representation of facial expression features. These two components balance the subtle competition between local features and global feature representations of facial expressions. The ablation experiment has proved the effectiveness of the grid attention module and Transformer. Experiments demonstrate that our GAT-Net outperforms state-of-the-art methods on DFEW and AFEW benchmarks with accuracies of 67.53%, and 50.14% respectively.
