The next generation of the Web, called Semantic Web, has to improve the Web with semantic page annotations to enable knowledge-level querying and searches. However, manual construction of these ontologies is a time consuming and difficult task. In this paper, we describe an automatic extraction method that learns domain ontologies for semantic web from deep web. Our approach first learns a base ontology from deep web query interfaces, then grows the current ontology by probing the sources and discovering additional concepts and instances from the result pages. We have evaluated our approach in several real-world domains. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed extraction method discovers concepts and instances with high accuracy.

In this paper, we present our solutions for the WikipediaMM task at ImageCLEF 2008. The aim of this task is to investigate effective retrieval approaches in the context of a large-scale and heterogeneous collection of Wikipedia images that are searched by textual queries (and/or sample images and/or concepts) describing a user's information need. We first experimented with a text-based image retrieval approach with query extension, where the expansion terms are automatically selected from a knowledge base that is (semi-)automatically constructed from Wikipedia. We show how this open, constantly evolving encyclopedia can yield inexpensive knowledge structures that are specifically tailored to effectively enhance the semantics of queries. Encouragingly, the experimental results rank in the first place among all submitted runs. The second approach we experimented with is content-based image retrieval (CBIR), in which we first train 1-vs-all classifiers for all query concepts by using the training images obtained by Yahoo! search, and then treat the retrieval task as visual concept detection in the given Wikipedia image set. By comparison, this approach performs better than other submitted CBIR runs. Finally, we experimented with a cross-media image retrieval approach by combining and re-ranking text-based and content-based retrieval results. Despite the final experimental results were not formally submitted before the deadline, this approach performs remarkably better than the text-based retrieval or CBIR approaches.

We propose a cascaded linear model for joint Chinese word segmentation and partof- speech tagging. With a character-based perceptron as the core, combined with realvalued features such as language models, the cascaded model is able to efficiently utilize knowledge sources that are inconvenient to incorporate into the perceptron directly. Experiments show that the cascaded model achieves improved accuracies on both segmentation only and joint segmentation and part-of-speech tagging. On the Penn Chinese Treebank 5.0, we obtain an error reduction of 18.5% on segmentation and 12% on joint segmentation and part-of-speech tagging over the perceptron-only baseline. © 2008 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Among syntax-based translation models, the tree-based approach, which takes as input a parse tree of the source sentence, is a promising direction being faster and simpler than its string-based counterpart. However, current tree-based systems suffer from a major drawback: they only use the 1-best parse to direct the translation, which potentially introduces translation mistakes due to parsing errors. We propose a forest-based approach that translates a packed forest of exponentially many parses, which encodes many more alternatives than standard n-best lists. Large-scale experiments show an absolute improvement of 1.7 BLEU points over the 1-best baseline. This result is also 0.8 points higher than decoding with 30-best parses, and takes even less time. © 2008 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Dynamic description logic (DDL) is among the few emerging service composition solutions through logical reasoning. To overcome low efficiency and lacking context-aware support of DDL reasoning, we propose a new DDL-based service composition model, which supports context-based service pre-filtering over DDL reasoning space. The pre-filtering runs under the BPEL workflow and a distributed reasoning algorithm need to reasoning different contexts after pre-filtering.

Translation rule extraction is a fundamental problem in machine translation, especially for linguistically syntax-based systems that need parse trees from either or both sides of the bitext. The current dominant practice only uses 1-best trees, which adversely affects the rule set quality due to parsing errors. So we propose a novel approach which extracts rules from a packed forest that compactly encodes exponentially many parses. Experiments show that this method improves translation quality by over 1 BLEU point on a state-of-the-art tree-to-string system, and is 0.5 points better than (and twice as fast as) extracting on 30- best parses. When combined with our previous work on forest-based decoding, it achieves a 2.5 BLEU points improvement over the baseline, and even outperforms the hierarchical system of Hiero by 0.7 points. © 2008 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, by considering the multiple spatial-temporal characteristic of visual perception system, we propose a novel home video attention analysis method. Firstly, each frame of the video is segmented into regions which are more informative than pixels and image blocks. Then the saliency of each region is analyzed by combining static, motion and location attentions. Finally a region based saliency map is generated for each frame, and an attention score curve is obtained for the video clip by combining attention scores of all regions in each frame. Both of them can be utilized in wide applications. This method takes advantage of the properties of human visual perception and can well present the attention information of home videos. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this approach.

In this paper, we present an innovative model of tempo and its application in action scene detection for movie analysis. For the first time, we clearly propose that tempo indicates the rhythm of both movie scenarios and human perception. By thoroughly analyzing both aspects, we classify the factors of tempo into two sorts. The first is based on the film grammar and we use the low level features of shot length and camera motion to describe filmmaking by directors. The second is based on the human perception and we originally propose the information measure for perception depending on the cognitive informatics, a newly emerging and significative subject. With the information in both visual and auditory modalities, the low level features of motion intensity, motion complexity, audio energy and audio pace are integrated for the formulation of information to describe the viewers' emotional changes to continuously developing storyline. With both aspects, tempo is defined and tempo flow plot is derived as the clue of storyline. On the basis of video structuralization and movie tempo analysis, we build a system for hierarchical browse and edit with action scene annotation. Dynamic description logic (DDL) is among the few emerging service composition solutions through logical reasoning in AI area. To increase DDL reasoning efficiency, we proposed a new DDL-based service composition model that supports context-aware service pre-filtering over DDL reasoning space. In this model, service filtering based on contexts runs under the workflow control logic. We evaluated filtering approach on a simple, yet realistic example, and the results shows this approach provides a practical solution.

To overcome the main drawbacks of global minimal for active contour models (L. D. Cohen and Ron Kimmel) that the contour is only extracted partially for low SNR images, Method of boundary extraction based on Schrödinger Equation is proposed. Our Method is based on computing the numerical solutions of initial value problem for second order nonlinear Schrödinger equation by using discrete Fourier Transformation. Schrödinger transformation of image is first given. We compute the probability P(b,a) that a particle moves from a point a to another point b according to I-Type Schrödinger transformation of image and obtain boundary of object by using quantum contour model.
