Predicting functional properties of proteins is needed in a number of applications. A protein is represented as an ordered list of amino acids, where each amino acid has a sequence and a structure component (the terms amino acid and residue are used interchangeably). Since functional properties of proteins usually depend on their actual three-dimensional structures in living organisms, the geometrical configuration of amino acids is of great importance. Focusing on this issue, this paper first abstracts the problem based on the analysis of the already existed approaches. Then a formal approach towards the reasonable representation is presented. In particular, the paper shows that two parameters are not adequate for representing the 3D residue sequence structure. © 2007 IEEE.

In this paper, we give an overview of the ICT statistical machine translation systems for the evaluation campaign of the International Workshop on Spoken Language Translation (IWSLT) 2007. In this year’s evaluation, we participated in the Chinese-English transcript translation task, and developed three systems based on different techniques: a formally syntax-based system Bruin, an extended phrase-based system Confucius and a linguistically syntax-based system Lynx. We will describe the models of these three systems, and compare their performance in detail. We set Bruin as our primary system, which ranks 2 among the 15 primary results according to the official evaluation results. © 2007 International Workshop on Spoken Language Translation, IWSLT 2007. All rights reserved.

A new distance for image clustering called Generalized Geodesic Distance (GGD) and an appearance-based image clustering approach called Global Geometric Clustering for Image (GGCI) are *** the traditional distance, GGD takes into account the spatial relationships of ***, it is robust to small perturbation of *** based on GGD uses easily measured local metric information to learn the underlying global geometry of images space, then applies the extended nearest neighbor approach to cluster *** from the usual nearest neighbor approach, GGCI considers the density around the nearest points within manifolds embedded in high dimensional image space, which better reflects the intrinsic geometric structure of *** results suggest that the proposed GGCI approach achieves lower error rates in image clustering.

In this paper, a technique for the extraction of roads in a high resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is presented. And a three-step method is developed for the extraction of road network from space borne SAR image: the process of the feature points, road candidate detection and connection. Roads in a high resolution SAR image can be modeled as a homogeneous dark area bounded by two parallel boundaries. Dark areas, which represent the candidate positions for roads, are extracted from the image by a Gaussian probability iteration segmentation. Possible road candidates are further processed using the morphological operators. And the roads are accurately detected by Hough Transform, and the extraction of lines is achieved by searching the peak values in Hough Space. In this process, to detect roads more accurately, post-processing, including noisy dark regions removal and false roads removal is performed. At last, Road candidate connection is carried out hierarchically according to road established models. Finally, the main road network is established from the SAR image successfully. As an example, using the ERS-2SAR image data, automatic detection of main road network in Shanghai Pudong area is presented.

Image matching is the first step in almost any 3D computer vision task, and hence has received extensive attention. In this paper, the problem is addressed from a novel perspective, which is different from the classic stereo matching paradigm. Two images with different resolutions, that is high resolution versus low resolution are matched. Since the high resolution image only corresponds to a small region of the low resolution one, the matching task therefore consists in finding a small region in the low resolution image that can be assigned to the whole high resolution image under the plane similarity transformation, which can be defined by the local area correlation coefficient to match the interest points and rectified by similarity transform. Experiment shows that our matching algorithm can be used for scale changing up to a factor of 6. And it is successful to deal with the point matching between two images under large scale.

Due to the existence of a large amount of legacy information systems, how to obtain the information and integrate the legacy systems is becoming more and more concerned. This paper introduces the integration pattern based on agent grid. And we propose an agent grid intelligent platform called AGrIP, which can erase information islands and integrate external systems efficiently by encapsulating the distributed application system to agents. AGrIP adopts distributed hierarchical structure, which is capable of integrating external systems to provide the users various services dynamically. AGrIP has proved itself scalable and efficient during the industry projects development and application. © 2007 IEEE.

A method based on the fast adaptive chirplet transform is presented for bearing vibration signal analysis. Based on parameters coarse estimation, it converts multi-dimension optimization process to a traditional curve-fitting problem. This method is not only free of cross-term interference, but also maintains good time-frequency resolution. In addition, as a result of fewer inner product calculations are conducted, the computational speed is fast and parameters estimation is more accurate. The experimental results show that the algorithm can efficiently extract the time-frequency characteristics of the fault signals, and the effect is better than other time-frequency methods. Therefore, it is an efficient fault diagnosis method. © 2007 IEEE.

In the past decade, many papers about granular computing(GrC) have been published, but the key points about granular computing(GrC) are still unclear. In this paper, we try to find the key points of GrC in the information transformation of the pattern recognition. The information similarity is the main point in the original insight of granular computing (GrC) proposed by Zadeh(1997[1]). Many GrC researches are based on equivalence relation or more generally tolerance relation, equivalence relation or tolerance relation can be described by some distance functions and GrC can be geometrically defined in a framework of multiscale covering, at other hand, the information transformation in the pattern recognition can be abstracted as a topological transformation in a feature information space, so topological theory can be used to study GrC. The key points of GrC are (1) there are two granular computing approaches to change a high dimensional complex distribution domain to a low dimensional and simple domain, (2) these two kind approaches can be used in turn if feature vector itself can be arranged in a granular way.

A panoramic video is an image-based rendering (IBR) technique which provides users with a large field of view (e.g. 360 degree) on surrounding dynamic scenes. It includes not only the translational motions but also the non-translational motions, such as zooming, rotation and uneven stretching etc. This paper presents a motion compensated prediction scheme based on adaptive selection of motion models to predict the complex changes between successive frames efficiently in panoramic video coding. By performing the initial motion estimation phrase and the refined motion estimation phrase in the proposed scheme, simulated results show that the coding performance of the proposed scheme is much higher than the traditional motion compensated prediction scheme in panoramic video coding.

SVM (support vector machine) enables effective image classification for semantic image retrieval. However, how to train accurate image classifiers in high-dimensional feature space suffers from the problem of choosing proper training samples. To solve this problem, a novel approach named CGSVM (clustering guided SVM) is presented, which utilizes clustering result to select the most informative image samples to be labeled, and optimize the penalty coefficient. Experimental results show that our algorithm achieves higher search accuracy than regular SVM for semantic image retrieval.
