In this work, we propose a no-reference image quality evaluation approach, aiming to solve the problem that the traditional convolutional neural network is insufficient to express the global information of the image. Therefore, in order to make the captured image features have the coherence of global context information, we combine a Transformer structure widely used in NLP (natural language processing) with the traditional CNN to realize the attention mechanism in the human visual perception characteristics. Firstly, the self-attention mechanism of Transformer is used to learn the global representation of the image from the multi-layer features extracted from different levels of CNN. Additionally, to forecast the ultimate image quality score, the global and local attributes are combined. Finally, the proposed algorithm is evaluated on three public datasets commonly used in CSIQ [1], TID2013 [2] and LIVE [3]. Compared with eight traditional no-reference image quality evaluation algorithms and five methods based on deep learning, the proposed algorithm achieves competitive results. © 2023 IEEE.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) and massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technologies rely heavily on accurate channel state information (CSI) to significantly increase system capacity. However, the large size of the antenna array makes it more difficult to obtain accurate channel state information. We propose to utilize beam domain channels to improve the channel estimation accuracy. Specifically, we first construct the angular domain compensation. By utilizing this angular domain compensation, we further propose an angular domain compensated alternating direction multiplier method (ADC-ADMM) algorithm. The scheme models the channel estimation problem as a bi-objective convex optimization problem with joint angular domain compensation, which can capture channel state information more comprehensively. In addition, the angular domain compensation can provide a priori information and improve the robustness in noisy environments. The simulation results confirm the feasibility of the proposed ADC-ADMM scheme.

In the process industry, limit cycles are mostly induced by stiction-related nonlinearity in control valves, severely deteriorating control loop performance. Such problem highlights the importance of compensating for oscillations due to valve stiction. To this end, this work introduces an improved PI controller(IPIC) for stiction compensation, which retains the advantages of the traditional PI controller with fewer adjustment parameters. The enhancement involves nonlinear variation of the integral gain based on instantaneous error. Additionally, a differential evolution algorithm is utilized for controller *** to state-of-the-art methods in setpoint tracking, disturbance rejection, and robustness to parameter uncertainties, the proposed approach exhibits superior performance.

The recently proposed concept of Age of information (AoI) measures the freshness of the sensor data sampled by remote Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which is an important indicator for the smart city. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) communication can significantly reduce the sensor data's AoI due to its high maneuverability. However, the UAV's high energy consumption remains a challenging issue. In this paper, we propose a Reconfigurable intelligent Surface (RIS) assisted UAV data collection framework to minimize UAV energy consumption. By adjusting the phase of the RIS, the UAV can collect more sensor data simultaneously. A RIS phase alignment method is introduced to reduce the complexity of RIS phase solving. The IoT devices are clustered to discretize UAV trajectory. The optimal clustering scheme to maximize the AoI suppression efficiency is found by adjusting the RIS phase alignment points continuously. Therefore, the AoI requirement can be achieved with a shorter UAV flight distance. Finally, the UAV trajectory is solved by the Deep Q network (DQN) algorithm to guarantee the long-term AoI requirement. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2023 IEEE.

Enhancing Neural Machine Translation with Semantic Units

Conventional neural machine translation (NMT) models typically use subwords and words as the basic units for model input and comprehension. However, complete words and phrases composed of several tokens are often the fundamental units for expressing semantics, referred to as semantic units. To address this issue, we propose a method Semantic Units for Machine Translation (SU4MT) which models the integral meanings of semantic units within a sentence, and then leverages them to provide a new perspective for understanding the sentence. Specifically, we first propose Word Pair Encoding (WPE), a phrase extraction method to help identify the boundaries of semantic units. Next, we design an Attentive Semantic Fusion (ASF) layer to integrate the semantics of multiple subwords into a single vector: the semantic unit representation. Lastly, the semantic-unit-level sentence representation is concatenated to the token-level one, and they are combined as the input of encoder. Experimental results demonstrate that our method effectively models and leverages semantic-unit-level information and outperforms the strong baselines. In this study, we introduce a novel Hybrid Federated Learning (HybridFL) approach aimed at enhancing privacy and accuracy in collaborative machine learning scenarios. Our methodology integrates Differential Privacy (DP) and secret sharing techniques to address inference risks during training and protect against information leakage in the output model. Drawing inspiration from recent advances, we present a HybridFL framework that combines the strengths of Homomorphic Encryption (HE) and Multi-Party Computation (MPC) to achieve secure computation without the computational overhead of pure HE methods. Our contributions include a privacy-preserving design for Federated Learning (FL) that ensures local data privacy through secret sharing while leveraging DP mechanisms for noise addition. The system offers resilience against unreliable participants and is evaluated using various machine learning models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLP), and linear regression. Furthermore, we address potential external threats by deploying predictive model outputs as robust services against inference attacks. Experimental results demonstrate improved accuracy and convergence speed, establishing the viability of HybridFL as an effective solution for collaborative machine learning with enhanced privacy guarantees. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2025.

FoodSky: A Food-Oriented Large Language Model Can Pass the Chef and Dietetic Examination

Food is the cornerstone of both survival and social life. With the increasing complexity of global dietary needs and preferences, there is a growing demand for food intelligence to enable tasks like recipe recommendation and diet-disease correlation discovery. To address this, we introduce the Food-oriented Large Language Model (LLM) FoodSky, which offers fine-grained perception and reasoning of food data. We constructed a food corpus, FoodEarth, from various authoritative sources to enhance FoodSky's knowledge. We also developed the Topic-based Selective State Space Model and Hierarchical Topic Retrieval Augmented Generation algorithms to improve FoodSky's ability to capture fine-grained food semantics and generate context-aware food-relevant text. Extensive experiments show that FoodSky outperforms general-purpose LLMs on the Chinese National Chef Exam and Dietetic Exam, achieving accuracies of 67.2% and 66.4%, respectively. FoodSky not only enhances culinary creativity and promotes healthier eating patterns but also establishes a new standard for domain-specific LLMs tackling real-world food-related issues. © 2024, The Authors. The detection of environmental microorganisms is always a difficult task, e specially when the multi-scale environment is complex. For tiny objects in microscopic images, current detection methods face the challenge of accurate identification and localization. In contrast, we propose a convolutional neural network (ECA-RetinaNet) for microscopic object detection of which underlying dataset is a high-quality EMDS-7 dataset. The accuracy of ECA-RetinaNet is high, with a high mean Average Precision (mAP) value of 81.42% in the Environmental Microorganisms (EMS) detection task. Its accuracy has been higher than that of the two-stage object detection network. © 2023 IEEE.

Questionnaire survey systems are a kind of computer-aided survey tool, which are helpful for the questionnaire publisher to collect the opinions and appeals of the respondents. Nevertheless, it is difficult for the questionnaire publisher to solve tricky questions such as respondents’ inactivity in answering questions, especially in the subjective questionnaire. The paper extends the privacy-friendly incentive protocols of Camenisch et al. based on the technique of signatures of knowledge and the Au-Susilo-Mu signature and put forward a subjective questionnaire system oriented to professional course teaching. The new system controls the range of participants by specific attributes. It also allows participants to remain anonymous at all phases, so they can truly feedback on their subjective evaluations. Moreover, when students are not within the scope of the survey, they are encouraged to help to review the collected subjective questionnaire answers. Furthermore, the new system introduces a token mechanism to stimulate students’ participation. Security analysis shows that the new system satisfies correctness, balance, anonymity, and unlinkability. © 2023 SPIE.

The load balancing algorithm of streaming media server is facing unique challenges. Different from the traditional Web server, the streaming media server needs to consider the characteristics of real-time, bandwidth occupation and multimedia data transmission. Therefore, the traditional load balancing algorithm is not necessarily suitable for streaming media servers, and needs special design and research. Aiming at the network requests of streaming media server clusters, a multi-dimensional matrix evaluation method based on streaming media characteristics is proposed, the genetic algorithm is improved, and it is applied to the dynamic load balancing algorithm scheduling scenario, and analyzed and simulated. Experimental results show that the algorithm can effectively reduce the average execution time of all requests, speed up the average response time and improve throughput.
