Joint item recommendation and attribute inference: An adaptive graph convolutional network approach

In many recommender systems, users and items are associated with attributes, and users show preferences to items. The attribute information describes users’ (items’) characteristics and has a wide range of applications, such as user profiling, item annotation, and feature-enhanced recommendation. As annotating user (item) attributes is a labor intensive task, the attribute values are often incomplete with many missing attribute values. Therefore, item recommendation and attribute inference have become two main tasks in these platforms. Researchers have long converged that user (item) attributes and the preference behavior are highly correlated. Some researchers proposed to leverage one kind of data for the remaining task, and showed to improve performance. Nevertheless, these models either neglected the incompleteness of user (item) attributes or regarded the correlation of the two tasks with simple models, leading to suboptimal performance of these two tasks. To this end, in this paper, we define these two tasks in an attributed user-item bipartite graph, and propose an Adaptive Graph Convolutional Network (AGCN) approach for joint item recommendation and attribute inference. The key idea of AGCN is to iteratively perform two parts: 1) Learning graph embedding parameters with previously learned approximated attribute values to facilitate two tasks;2) Sending the approximated updated attribute values back to the attributed graph for better graph embedding learning. Therefore, AGCN could adaptively adjust the graph embedding learning parameters by incorporating both the given attributes and the estimated attribute values, in order to provide weakly supervised information to refine the two tasks. Multi-behavioral recommender systems have emerged as a solution to address data sparsity and cold-start issues by incorporating auxiliary behaviors alongside target behaviors. However, existing models struggle to accurately capture varying user preferences across different behaviors and fail to account for diverse item preferences within behaviors. Various user preference factors (such as price or quality) entangled in the behavior may lead to sub-optimization problems. Furthermore, these models overlook the personalized nature of user behavioral preferences by employing uniform transformation networks for all users and items. To tackle these challenges, we propose the Disentangled Cascaded Graph Convolutional Network (Disen-CGCN), a novel multi-behavior recommendation model. Disen-CGCN employs disentangled representation techniques to effectively separate factors within user and item representations, ensuring their independence. In addition, it incorporates a multi-behavioral meta-network, enabling personalized feature transformation across user and item behaviors. Furthermore, an attention mechanism captures user preferences for different item factors within each behavior. By leveraging attention weights, we aggregate user and item embeddings separately for each behavior, computing preference scores that predict overall user preferences for items. Our evaluation on benchmark datasets demonstrates the superiority of Disen-CGCN over state-of-the-art models, showcasing an average performance improvement of 7.07% and 9.00% on respective datasets. These results highlight Disen-CGCN’s ability to effectively leverage multi-behavioral data, leading to more accurate recommendations. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Based on structural hole theory, this study explores the differences in the ability of Chinese social media users with different characteristics to provide accurate information. Using over 20 million interactive data from 2.19 million users, we construct a social network and identify structural hole spanners and ordinary users. As key players in a network, structural hole spanners are typically located at the intersections of different groups or information sources. They differ from ordinary users in the way they gather and disseminate information. The empirical results indicate that the accuracy of market judgements by structural hole spanners is at least 12.38 % higher than that of ordinary users. Strategy simulations show that using information from structural hole spanners to make investment decisions can achieve a 116 % cumulative return during the backtesting period, nearly four times that of ordinary users. This information advantage occurs primarily because opinion distance and information uniqueness play significant roles in improving information accuracy. This study not only helps deepen understanding of information dissemination characteristics among heterogeneous users on social media but also provides empirical support for the application of structural hole theory in finance, with important theoretical and practical implications. © 2024

One-bit supervision for image classification

This paper presents one-bit supervision, a novel setting of learning from incomplete annotations, in the scenario of image classification. Instead of training a model upon the accurate label of each sample, our setting requires the model to query with a predicted label of each sample and learn from the answer whether the guess is correct. This provides one bit (yes or no) of information, and more importantly, annotating each sample becomes much easier than finding the accurate label from many candidate classes. There are two keys to training a model upon one-bit supervision: improving the guess accuracy and making use of incorrect guesses. For these purposes, we propose a multi-stage training paradigm which incorporates negative label suppression into an off-the-shelf semi-supervised learning algorithm. In three popular image classification benchmarks, our approach claims higher efficiency in utilizing the limited amount of annotations. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Based on the Social Cognition Theory, we constructed the influencing factors model of college students' intention of online health information behavior from three levels of individual, society and information systems, which was analyzed by using the PLS-SEM. Research shows that self-efficacy, information service quality, social support, information literacy and information quality significantly influence college students' intention of online health information behavior. However, the influence of perceived risk and information system quality is not significant. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Visual attention not only improves the performance of image captioners, but also serves as a visual interpretation to qualitatively measure the caption rationality and model transparency. Specifically, we expect that a captioner can fix its attentive gaze on the correct objects while generating the corresponding words. This ability is also known as grounded image captioning. However, the grounding accuracy of existing captioners is far from *** improve the grounding accuracy while retaining the captioning quality, it is expensive to collect the word-region alignment as strong *** this end, we propose a Part-of-Speech (POS) enhanced image-text matching model (SCAN[24]): POS-SCAN, as the effective knowledge distillation for more grounded image captioning. The benefits are two-fold: 1) given a sentence and an image, POS-SCAN can ground the objects more accurately than SCAN; 2) POS-SCAN serves as a word-region alignment regularization for the captioner's visual attention module. By showing benchmark experimental results, we demonstrate that conventional image captioners equipped with POS-SCAN can significantly improve the grounding accuracy without strong supervision. Last but not the least, we explore the indispensable Self-Critical Sequence Training (SCST[46]) in the context of grounded image captioning and show that the image-text matching score can serve as a reward for more grounded captioning 1 .

With the high mortality rate for the cases of malignant tumors, the discovery and early treatment of cancer is critical to improving the 5-year survival rate of cancer. The biggest challenge in control and prevention is how to detect tumors as early as possible, so that the most effective means can be used for treatment. With the help of the WOS database, researchers found that liquid biopsy, genetic material/protein expression and computer imaging play an important role in cancer detection. Through analysis of the history and current status of cancer detection technology development, this paper also aims to provide guidance for the clinical practice of current cancer screening and provide inspiration for future technological development.

Existing deep learning-based pan-sharpening methods mainly learn spatial information from a high-resolution (HR) panchromatic (PAN) image for each spectral channel. However, due to the own characteristics of remote sensing image data, the spatial information of PAN image often shows weak correlation with some spectral channel, especially for channels non-overlapped by PAN channel. In this paper, we propose a parallel pyramid network (PPN) for pan-sharpening. First, a three-branch parallel structure is proposed for dealing with PAN image detail, multispectral (MS) images detail and spectral property respectively. Second, pyramid network structure is introduced in two detail branches to solve the problem of weak correlation due to scale difference. Third, the feature level fusion in two detail branches is implemented, which utilizes redundancy between channels to solve detail representation of channels non-overlapped by PAN channel. The qualitative and quantitative experimental results on various data sets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over the state-of-the-art methods.

Recovering Accurate Labeling Information from Partially Valid data for Effective Multi-Label Learning

Partial Multi-label Learning (PML) aims to induce the multi-label predictor from datasets with noisy supervision, where each training instance is associated with several candidate labels but only partially valid. To address the noisy issue, the existing PML methods basically recover the ground-truth labels by leveraging the ground-truth confidence of the candidate label, i.e., the likelihood of a candidate label being a ground-truth one. However, they neglect the information from non-candidate labels, which potentially contributes to the ground-truth label recovery. In this paper, we propose to recover the ground-truth labels, i.e., estimating the ground-truth confidences, from the label enrichment, composed of the relevance degrees of candidate labels and irrelevance degrees of non-candidate labels. Upon this observation, we further develop a novel two-stage PML method, namely Partial MultiLabel Learning with Label Enrichment-Recovery (PML3ER), where in the first stage, it estimates the label enrichment with unconstrained label propagation, then jointly learns the ground-truth confidence and multi-label predictor given the label enrichment.
