Hydraulic transport of solids in pipelines is an important operation in industries such as metallurgy, mining and mineral processing. The hydraulic behaviour of the solids, i.e. velocity and concentration spatial distributions and pressure drop, in the conveyer pipes should be well understood as it results in developing of a set of correlations which are necessary for the design of hydraulic pipelines. Pipeline slurries exhibit a complex range of flow patterns, depending upon the physical properties of carrier fluid and transported solids, the superficial liquid velocity and concentration of slurry. Most of numerical, theoretical and experimental studies in the area of vertical lifting have been focused on the transportations of fine and medium size solids;and just a few research have been carried out on the vertical hydraulic conveying of coarse particles, particularly in terms of numerical studies. Therefore, in this work, a three-dimensional Discrete Element Model (DEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are coupled to study the hydraulic transport of coarse solids in vertical conveyers with carrying fluid of water under different operation conditions. The model shows a good agreement with experimental observations both qualitatively and quantitatively, and it captures some specific phenomena related to the coarse particles such as the near-wall hydrodynamic lift force, which keeps the particles away the pipe wall. © BHR Group Hydrotransport 20.

Natural convection of SiO_2-water nanofluid in square cavity with thermal square column

A square with a thermal square column is a simple but nontrivial research prototype for nanofluid research. However, until now, the effects of the temperature of the square column on the heat and mass transfer of nanofluids have not been revealed comprehensively, especially on entropy generation. To deepen insight into this important field, the natural convection of the SiO2-water nanofluid in a square cavity with a square thermal column is studied numerically in this study. The effects of the thermal column temperature （T = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5）, the Rayleigh number （ranging from 103 to 106）, and the volume fraction of the nanoparticle （varying from 0.01 to 0.04） on the fluid flow, heat transfer, and entropy generation are investigated, respectively. It is found that, no matter at a low or high Rayleigh number, the volume fraction of the nanoparticle shows no considerable effects on the flow field and temperature field for all the temperatures of the thermal column. With an increase in the volume fraction, the mean Nusselt number increases slightly. At the same time, it is found that, with an increase in the temperature of the thermal column, the average Nusselt number gradually decreases at all values of the Rayleigh number. Meanwhile, it is found that, at a high Rayleigh number, the heat transfer mechanism is the main parameter affecting the increase in the total entropy generation rather than the volume fraction. In addition, no matter at a high or low Rayleigh number, when T = 0.5, the total entropy generation is the minimum.

A new approach for the digital watermarking process is proposed to be part of the pre-processing stage of a computer-aided diagnosis system. We propose to embed a denoised image acting as the watermark image in the original host image with the final goal of improving the quality of demoscopic images for further image processing operation related to CAD. The proposed algorithm uses Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) corroborated with some basic properties of Human Visual System such as Contrast Sensitive Function (CSF) and Noise Visibility Function (NVF) with the goal of correlating the texture properties and noise. This approach hides the watermark (i.e. denoised version of the host image) in high-pass subbands that are focused on image features. The main concern is to evaluate the distortion produced to the host image by watermarking and an objective quality measure function, i.e. Weighted Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (WPSNR), is used to evaluate the existing differences between the original and watermarked images. The proposed approach is tested using the available skin lesion images from the digital image archive of the Department of Dermatology of the University Medical Center Groningen. The experiment results show the improved performance of the proposed scheme against a 3 × 3 median filtering attack in comparison with the a 5 × 5 median filtering attack.

Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes. © 2023, CC BY.

We carried out density-functional ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of Ti adatom (Tiad) migration on, and descent from, square TiN〈100〉 epitaxial islands on TiN(001) at temperatures (T) ranging from 1200 to 2400 K. Adatom-descent energy barriers determined via ab initio nudged-elastic-band calculations at 0 Kelvin suggest that Ti interlayer transport on TiN(001) occurs essentially exclusively via direct hopping onto a lower layer. However, AIMD simulations reveal comparable rates for Tiad descent via direct hopping vs push-out/exchange with a Ti island-edge atom for T≥1500K. We demonstrate that this effect is due to surface vibrations, which yield considerably lower activation energies at finite temperatures by significantly modifying the adatom push-out/exchange reaction pathway.

Flow in fractured porous media occurs in the earth’s subsurface, in biological tissues, and in man-made materials. Fractures have a dominating influence on flow processes, and the last decade has seen an extensive development of models and numerical methods that explicitly account for their presence. To support these developments, we present a portfolio of four benchmark cases for single-phase flow in three-dimensional fractured porous media. The cases are specifically designed to test the methods’ capabilities in handling various complexities common to the geometrical structures of fracture networks. Based on an open call for participation, results obtained with 17 numerical methods were collected. This paper presents the underlying mathematical model, an overview of the features of the participating numerical methods, and their performance in solving the benchmark cases. Continuous increased of on-road vehicles has also increased the possibility of accidents, most o f it caused by human errors. Hence, a solution has been proposed, which is to make vehicles more intelligent through research on vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Currently, simulation on VANETs has been widely studied. It is known that networking and mobility component are required to fonn a VANET. In this paper, mobility component is focused and discussed. A few mobility simulators have been introduced with some citations of related works for each of the simulators. MATLAB and simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) are further used for VANET simulation respectively. At the same time, TraCMMatlab, an Application Programming Intel face (API) developed in MAIZAB that allows communication between any applications written in MATLAB and SUMO simulator is also discussed. © 2016 IEEE.

Distant entanglement enhanced in PT-symmetric optomechanics

We study steady-state continuous-variable entanglement in a three-mode optomechanical system consisting of an active optical cavity (gain) coupled to a passive optical cavity (loss) supporting a mechanical mode. For a driving laser which is blue-detuned, we show that coupling between optical and mechanical modes is enhanced in the unbroken-PT-symmetry regime. We analyze the stability and this shows that steady-state solutions are more stable in the gain and loss systems. We use these stable solutions to generate distant entanglement between the mechanical mode and the optical field inside the gain cavity. It results in a giant enhancement of entanglement compared to what is generated in the single lossy cavity. This work offers the prospect of exploring quantum state engineering and quantum information in such systems. Furthermore, such entanglement opens up an interesting possibility to study spatially separated quantum objects.

In this paper an idea of using Evolving Fuzzy Model method for electrical energy consumption prediction is presented. The prediction of energy consumption is an important task for energy trading companies. The prediction should be as accurate as possible since the accuracy of the prediction translates directly into company's profit. In this paper we compare an adaptive linear model with evolving fuzzy model on an energy consumption prediction. ©2016 IEEE.

This paper deals with the problem of improving the seismic strength of mechanical structures by using a tendon system as actuation device. It consists of a pair of tension cables transmitting a control torque to the structure at the moment arm position. The purpose of the paper is to, establish the analytical framework consisting of mathematical modelling of cantilever beam under active tendon structural control, analyze the stability and, determine the physical characteristics of tendon system leading to the suppression of horseshoes chaos. The control efficiency is found by analyzing the behavior of the controlled system through the Melnikov methods.
