Recently, it was demonstrated that metamaterials can be used to harvest ambient electromagnetic energy [1]. However, the choice of the rectifying circuit for highly efficient energy conversion of RF electromagnetic power to DC power remains an important challenge [2,3]. Therefore, it is important to design a metasurface integrating a rectifier circuit in combination with a proper matching impedance to optimize the power transfer.

Effects of surface vibrations on interlayer mass-transport: ab initio molecular dynamics investigation of Ti adatom descent pathways and rates from TiN/TiN(001) islands

We carry out density-functional ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of Ti adatom (Tiad) migration on, and descent from, TiN -faceted epitaxial islands on TiN(001) at temperatures T ranging from 1200 to 2400 K. Adatom-descent energy-barriers determined via ab initio nudged-elastic-band calculations at 0 Kelvin suggest that Ti interlayer transport on TiN(001) occurs essentially exclusively via direct hopping onto a lower layer. However, AIMD simulations reveal comparable rates for Tiad descent via direct-hopping vs. push-out/exchange with a Ti island edge atom for T ≥ 1500 K. We demonstrate that the effect is due to surface vibrations, which yield considerably lower activation energies at finite temperatures by significantly modifying the adatom push/out-exchange reaction pathway. Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin. Particle swarm optimization based maximum power point tracking for partially shaded photovoltaic arrays

This paper presents particle swarm optimization based perturb and observe (PSO-P&O) algorithm for maximizing output power of photovoltaic (PV) array under partially shaded conditions (PSC). During PSC, the P-V characteristic of PV will become more complex with multiple maximum power points (MPP). Most of the conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, such as P&O, will be trapped at the local MPP and hence limiting the maximum power generation. As such, investigation on PSO-P&O algorithm is carried out to maximize the PV generated power principally under PSC operation. The performances of conventional P&O and the proposed PSO-P&O algorithms are investigated particularly on the transient and steady state responses under various shaded conditions. The simulation results show the developed PSO- P&O algorithm is able to facilitate the PV array to reach the global MPP and assist the PV array to produce more stable output power compared to the conventional P&O algorithm. © 2016, UK simulation Society. Elastic and Optoelectronic Properties of KCdF3:ab initio Calculations through LDA/GGA/TB-mBJ within FP-LAPW Method

Ab initio calculations are performed on the electronic, structural, elastic and optical properties of the cubic per- ovskite KCdF3. Tile Kohn Sham equations are solved by applying the full potential linearized augmented plane wave （FP-LAPW） method. The exchange correlation effects are included through the local density approximation （LDA ）, generalized gradient approximation （GGA） and modified Becke-Johnson （mBJ） exchange potential The calculated lattice constant is in good agreement with the experimental result. The elastic properties such as elastic constants, anisotropy factor, shear modulus, Young＇s modulus and Poisson＇s ratio are calculated. KCdF3 is ductile and elastically anisotropic. The calculations of the electronic band structure, density of states （DOS） and charge density show that this compound has an indirect energy band gap （M-F） with a mixed ionic and covalent bonding. The contribution of the different bands is analyzed from the total and partial density of states curves. Optical response of the dielectric functions, optical reflectivity, absorption coefficient, real part of optical conductivity, refractive index, extinction coefficient and electron energy loss, are presented for the energy range of O-40eV. The compound KCdF3 can be used for high-frequency optical and optoelectronic devices.

A three-dimensional Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase model (two-fluid model, TFM) was developed to simulate the three-phase mixing behaviors of superheated steam, heat-carrier and biomass particles in an industrial-scale spout-fluid bed mixer. The superheated steam was treated as continuous primary phase simulated by the k-Ε two-equation turbulent model, while the heat-carrier and biomass were treated as two different secondary phases, and their viscosities and pressures were provided by the Kinetic theory of granular flow. The interactions between gas phase and each solid phase are described by Symbol-O'Brein drag model, while the interaction between two solid phases is described by morsi-alexander model. Heat transfers between gas phase and solid phases were calculated by Gunn model. Based on above models, the mixing effectiveness of the mixer was valuated and the effects of material properties on the heat transfer between phases were numerically investigated. Results show that the mixing effectivenss of spout-fluid mixer can reach over 70% and the final temperature of biomass is most sensitive to the size of biomass particle. © 2016, Science Press. We use the generalized Lugiato-Lefever model to investigate the phenomenon of Kerr optical frequency comb generation when group-velocity dispersion is null. In that case, the first dispersion term that plays a leading role is third-order dispersion. We show that this term is sufficient to allow for the existence of both bright and dark solitons. We identify the areas in the parameter space where both kind of solitons can be excited inside the resonator. We also unveil a phenomenon of hysteretic switching between these two types of solitons when the power of the pump laser is cyclically varied. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper an idea for classification of energy consumption profiles using an evolving c-regression method is presented. Cluster prototypes (centers) are usually defined as a mean of data around the center. The cluster center is a vector of numerical values. The method presented in this paper uses Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models as a cluster prototype. Beside the method description also preliminary results of energy consumption profiles classification are given. © 2015 IEEE.

This work presents a numerical study of gas-solid flow in a blast furnace raceway region by CFD-DEM coupled approach. In the simulation, 120000 spherical particles with particle diameter of 80 mm are packed into a real blast furnace geometry. Blast is injected at high velocities to generate a void space in the front of tuyere. The results show that three types of raceways are formed, including anti-clockwise circulating motions of particles, clockwise circulating motions of particles, and plume-like raceway. The results are analysed mainly in terms of particle flow patterns, particle velocity, porosity,and gas flow field around the raceway region. The observation of two opposite circulating gas vortexes locating upon and below tuyere during raceway formation has a good agreement with experiments. Further, the effects of different variables such as tuyere length and angles, and particle properties on raceway size and shape are examined.

This paper presents an idea of evolving Gustafson-Kessel possibilistic c-means clustering (eGKPCM). This approach is extension of well known possiblilistic c-means clustering (PCM) which was proposed to address the drawbacks associated with the constrained membership functions used in fuzzy c-means algorithms (FCM). The idea of possiblistic clustering is ap- pealing when the data samples are highly noisy. The extension to Gustafson-Kessel possibilistic clustering enables us to deal with the clusters of different shapes and the evolving structure enables us to cope with the data structures which vary during the time. The evolving nature of the algorithm makes it also appropriate for dealing with big-data problems. The proposed approach is shown on a simple classification problem of unlabelled data.
