Voltage collapse is still the biggest threat to the transmission system. There are many approaches that have been explored to predict the point of voltage collapse. However, it is still lacking of information that related to current system state. With the advancement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) technology, it provides an alternate pathway to improve the existing power system state estimation. Hence, it was of interest to develop better methods that could give a preliminary warning before the voltage collapse. This paper concerns for the development of real-time system monitoring methods to give a timely warning in the power system. The algorithm to predict the points of collapse is based on the assumption that voltage instability is closely related to the maximum load ability of a transmission network. Therefore, the Thevenin impedance is equalled to the apparent load impedance at the points of collapse. Numerous methods such as Discrete Kalman Filter (DKF), Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) are being implemented into the real-time voltage instability predictor to track the Thevenin parameters. The test results are tested on Malaysia's power system 132 kV - 2-bus and 10-bus systems. The results are compared based on the early-warning index of voltage collapse. The results of DKF method are set as the reference for comparison purpose between EKF method and UKF method. The test results shown that EKF method provided better results by decreasing of 0.1169 p.u. for 2-bus system and 0.0338 p.u. for 10-bus system. In the meanwhile, UKF method provided increasing values of 0.4262 p.u. for 2-bus system and 0.1522 p.u. for 10-bus system. The overall purpose of this research is to develop methods that in provide early warning for an emerging stability problem. Collaborative beam forming (CB) is a cooperative technique that utilizes a group of distributed wireless nodes to collectively transmit a common message with proper phase weights to an intended direction. As a result, CB significantly extends the communication range of the sensor node in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Each sensor node in CB has an independent local oscillator. It becomes a vital problem to achieve CB as the distributed nodes are unaware of their phase relationship. Therefore, an efficient phase synchronisation algorithm is needed as the distributed nodes are unaware of their phase relationship. In this paper, an iterative phase synchronisation algorithm using (1+1)-evolution strategy (ES) is proposed to achieve CB in WSNs. Evaluations have been carried out through simulation and the results show that the proposed algorithm is more energy efficient in comparison to the existing phase synchronisation algorithm. © 2013 IEEE.

Current cellular wireless data communications require wide availability and satisfying quality of service to keep up with the rising number of wireless devices. It is challenging for the service provider to cater to different kinds of upcoming new services and applications as data rates vary apart in that respect. For that reason, it is of paramount importance to adaptively utilize the radio resources which are limited and valuable. The ability of Orthogonal Frequency-division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA) to split the entire bandwidth into smaller sub-carriers allows adaptive resource allocation to be performed in downlink communications. However, due to the time-varying nature of the wireless channel, not all links experience the same channel response. Therefore, this situation is akin to a strategic combination problem to find the best allocation out of the huge combinations according the current channel characteristics. This paper presents an evolutionary method, particle swarm optimization (PSO), to optimally allocate the rates and sub carriers to multiple users. The results display good convergences towards the optimal solution for a minimal transmit power allocation. At transmission intervals, the cellular base station will be able to use the best allocation relating to channel conditions of any point in time. © 2013 IEEE.

Normalised cut method has been effectively used for image segmentation by representing an image as weighted graph in global view. It does segmentation via partitioning the graphs into sub-graphs. Clustering algorithm is implemented such that sub-graphs with common similarities are grouped together into one cluster and separates sub-graphs that are dissimilar into distinctive clusters. Clustered segments from the normalised cuts are then produced. As the clusters initialisation gives influence to the segmentation result, optimisation of the clustering algorithm is implemented to achieve better segmentation. With the approach applied in the normalised cuts based image segmentation, the constraint of using normalised cuts algorithm in image segmentation can be alleviated. In this paper, evaluation of the clustering algorithm with the normalised cuts image segmentation on images has been carried out and the effect of different image complexity towards normalised cuts segmentation process is presented. © 2013 IEEE.

Voltage stability and voltage collapse issues have in recent years begun to constitute an unpleasant warning to the operational security of power *** consequence,the significances to develop preferable methods that would provide a preliminary warning before the voltage collapse had grabbed the *** paper considered the implementation of real-time system monitoring methods that able to provide a timely warning in the power system before the voltage collapse *** line voltage stability indices such as line stability index(Lmn) and voltage collapse point indicator(VCPI) were executed to resolve their *** main intension is to recognize which index is most applicable for being adopted in power system control and security ***,the time-domain results were used to calculate the line stability indices and to ratify with voltage stability indices *** line stability indices were tested in the smaller IEEE 9-bus test case and a larger IEEE 30-bus test *** PowerWorld simulator was used to provide the time-domain ***,the results from the simulation were used to calculate the line stability indices by using *** the indices were found consistent with the theoretical *** order to differentiate the performance and the robustness of the indices,the line stability indices' accuracy was *** the results in IEEE 9-bus test case and IEEE 30-bus test case,VCPI was found to have the best accuracy performances in reflecting the stability of the power systems.

The ankyrin repeat (AR) protein can be used as a versatile scaffold for protein–protein interactions. It has been found that the heterotrimeric complex between integrin-linked kinase (ILK), PINCH, and parvin is an essential signaling platform, serving as a convergence point for integrin and growth-factor signaling and regulating cell adhesion, spreading, and migration. Using ILK-AR with high affinity for the PINCH1 as our model system, we explored a structure-based computational protocol to probe and characterize binding affinity hot spots at protein–protein interfaces. In this study, the long time scale dynamics simulations with GPU accelerated molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in AMBER12 have been performed to locate the hot spots of protein-protein interaction by the analysis of the Molecular Mechanics–Poisson-Boltzmann Surface Area/Generalized Born Solvent Area (MM-PBSA/GBSA) of the MD trajectories. Our calculations suggest good binding affinity of the complex and also the residues critical in the binding.

In search for the important residues that might have involve in the binding interaction between the p24 caspid protein of HIV-1 fragment (MET68 - PRO90) with the single chain fragment variable (scFv) of FAB23.5, modern computational chemistry approach has been conducted and applied. The p24 fragment was initially taken out from the 1AFV protein molecule consisting of both light (VL) and heavy (VH) chains of FAB23.5 as well as the HIV-1 caspid protein. From there, the p24 (antigen) fragment was made to dock back into the protein pocket receptor (antibody) by using the CDOCKER algorithm to conduct the molecular docking process. The score calculated from the CDOCKER gave 15 possible docked poses with various docked ligand's positions, the interaction energy as well as the binding energy. The best docked pose that imitates the original antigen's position was determined and further processed to the In Situ minimization to obtain the residues interaction energy as well as to observe the hydrogen bonds interaction in the protein-peptide complex. Based on the results demonstrated, the specific residues in the complex that have shown immense lower interaction energies in the 5Å vicinity region from the peptide are from the heavy chain (VH:TYR105) and light chain (VL: ASN31, TYR32, and GLU97). Those residues play vital roles in the binding mechanism of Antibody-Antigen (Ab-Ag) complex of p24 with FAB23.5.

We investigate the compactlike pulse signal propagation in a two-dimensional nonlinear electrical transmission network with the intersite circuit elements (both in the propagation and transverse directions) acting as nonlinear resistances. Model equations for the circuit are derived and can reduce from the continuum limit approximation to a two-dimensional nonlinear Burgers equation governing the propagation of the small amplitude signals in the network. This equation has only the mass as conserved quantity and can admit as solutions cusp and compactlike pulse solitary waves, with width independent of the amplitude, according to the sign of the product of its nonlinearity coefficients. In particular, we show that only the compactlike pulse signal may propagate depending on the choice of the realistic physical parameters of the network, and next we study the dissipative effects on the pulse dynamics. The exactness of the analytical analysis is confirmed by numerical simulations which show a good agreement with results predicted by the Rosenau and Hyman K(2,2) equation.

Rapid implementation of advanced constitutive models

This paper presents a methodology based on the NICE integration scheme [1, 2] for simple and rapid numerical implementation of a class of plasticity constitutive models. In this regard, an algorithm is purposely developed for the implementation of newly developed advanced constitutive models into explicit finite element framework. The methodology follows the organization of the problem state variables into an extended form, which allows the constitutive models' equations to be organized in such a way, that the algorithm can be optionally extended with minimal effort to integrate also evolution equations related to a description of other specific phenomena, such as damage, distortional hardening, phase transitions, degradation etc. To confirm simplicity of the program implementation, computational robustness, effectiveness and improved accuracy of the implemented integration algorithm, a deep drawing simulation of the cylindrical cup is considered as the case study, performed in ABAQUS/Explicit. As a fairly complex considered model, the YLD2004-18p model [3, 4] is first implemented via external subroutine VUMAT. Further, to give additional proof of the simplicity of the proposed methodology, a combination of the YLD2004-18p model and Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model (GTN) is considered. As demonstrated, the implementation is really obtained in a very simple way.
