Image segmentation has been widely applied in image analysis for various areas such as biomedical imaging, intelligent transportation systems and satellite imaging. The main goal of image segmentation is to simplify an image into segments that have a strong correlation with objects in the real world. Homogeneous regions of an image are regions containing common characteristics and are grouped as single segment. One of the graph partitioning methods in image segmentation, normalised cuts, has been recognised producing reliable segmentation result. To date, normalised cuts in image segmentation of various sized images is still lacking of analysis of its performance. In this paper, segmentation on synthetic images and natural images are covered to study the performance and effect of different image complexity towards segmentation process. This study gives some research findings for effective image segmentation using graph partitioning method with computation cost reduced. Because of its cost expensive and it becomes unfavourable in performing image segmentation on high resolution image especially in online image retrieval systems. Thus, a graph-based image segmentation method done in multistage approach is introduced here. © 2012 IEEE.

Various means of modern transports have already taken the initiative to incorporate computing and communication technology. This cross field area is coined as intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Transport systems of the future require fast and precise monitoring to ensure safety of such systems is guaranteed. Thus, the communication aspect demands seamless and minimal error whilst delivering vital data. However, the dynamic surroundings always post a challenge to wireless communications, taking account into a myriad of interference such as multipath fading, shadowing, dispersing and path loss. Furthermore, there is also case of mobility. In this paper, the performance of wireless communications with adaptive modulation and coding in vehicular scenarios were compared against rigid transmission techniques. simulations were conducted over different mobility channel models against Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) to provide thorough analysis. Performance measure of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Packet Error Rate (PER) were used to provide understanding of the overall picture. © 2012 IEEE.

Exothermic process is highly nonlinear and complex process. Large amount of heat will be released during the chemical reaction. As a result of the exothermic behaviour, the reaction may become unstable and consequently poses safety concern to the plant if the reactor temperature exceeds the cooling capacity. In the industrial point of view, heating is needed in order to speed up the reaction rate so that it can reduce the overall process reaction time. Hence, this paper proposes genetic algorithm (GA) to control the reaction temperature as well as to balance the production needs with the safety specification. GA exploits probabilistic search method to optimise the specific objective function based on evolutionary principle. simulation assessment of the GA has been carried out using a benchmark exothermic batch process model. The results show that GA is a good candidate in controlling the reactor temperature. © 2012 IEEE.

Collaborate beamforming in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a concept of using beamforming technology to establish link in the networks. It can effectively increase the transmission distance and improve the energy efficiency of the networks. Due to random deployment of the sensor nodes in the networks, proper assignment for the sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks is vital to achieve better array pattern synthesis. In this paper, a node selection method based on uniform space linear array synthesis is presented. A virtual line was constructed in the network topology as a reference guide to optimize the selection of nodes to mimic the uniform space linear array. The node selection for collaborate beamforming is further optimized using genetic algorithm. Using the method, simulation results show an improvement of radiation beam pattern. © 2012 IEEE.

Adaptive modulation techniques in wireless communications are paramount technologies designed to thrive in fading and noisy environments. Methods as such require an accurate estimate of the channel condition at the receivers' end in order for the transmitter to adapt appropriately. With that in mind, a communication link which changes the degree of modulation scheme according to the estimated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values is proposed. Hence, the objective of the system is to achieve acceptable quality in a changing communication link. In this paper, spectral efficiency and average bit error rate of the overall system is measured. Monte Carlo simulations of different signals and channel conditions corroborate our analysis and discussion. © 2012 IEEE.

Image segmentation with low computational burden has been highly regarded as important goal for researchers. Various image segmentation methods are widely discussed and more noble segmentation methods are expected to be developed when there is rapid demand from the emerging machine vision field. One of the popular image segmentation methods is by using normalised cuts algorithm. It is unfavourable for a high resolution image to have its resolution reduced as high detail information is not fully made used when critical objects with weak edges is coarsened undesirably after its resolution reduced. Thus, a graph-based image segmentation method done in multistage manner is proposed here. In this paper, an experimental study based on the method is conducted. This study shows an alternative approach on the segmentation method using k-means clustering and normalised cuts in multistage manner. © 2012 IEEE.

In recent years, tracking vehicle with overlapping and maneuvering disturbances has become a challenging task in visual tracking. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is proved to be effective in tracking vehicle under disturbances by probabilistically estimating the vehicle position. However the sampling based tracking algorithm is highly depending on the sampling efficiencies where adequate chain length is necessary to sustain the tracking accuracy. Therefore variance ratio (VR) based MCMC has been implemented in this study to adapt the chain length according to the disturbances encountered. Isomap manifold learning is further implemented to update the vehicle model and accurately track the vehicle with maneuvering disturbances. Multiple vehicle models with different viewing angles are represented by Isomap under low dimensional manifold. The suitable vehicle model will be selected according to the estimated vehicle position. Experimental results have shown that Isomap-VR-MCMC have better tracking performances compared to VR-MCMC with smaller RMSE value. © 2012 IEEE.

Particle flow in a stirred mill was modeled using discrete element method, focusing on the effect of mill properties and stirrer configurations, such as particle-wall friction, the size of disc holes, distance between stirrers, and stirrer shape, on the flow properties of grinding media. The flow properties were analyzed in terms of velocity field, porosity distribution, collision frequency, collision energy, impact energy, and power draw. The results indicate that although particle-wall sliding friction coefficient affects the energy transfer from discs to particles, too high a sliding friction may lead to a decrease in energy efficiency. The distance between discs significantly affects the circulation of grinding media between discs. Among the different stirrer types considered, energy transfer is more effective when disc holes are present. Pin stirrer shows increased grinding rates which also results in relatively high power consumption. Although different collision environments exist with different stirrer types, it is shown that the grinding rate can be determined by the first-order kinetics where the rate constant is dependent on the impact energy, for a given material. Grinding efficiency has been compared for different grinding materials under different operating conditions. The results suggest that selection of stirrer geometry also depends on the feed size and the type of material to be ground. Discussion has also been made of the usefulness of particle scale information in the design and control of stirred mills of different types. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

This work investigated the effect of grinding medium size on the wet milling performance in stirred mills using a combined numerical and experimental approach. Physical experiments were performed in a 1.4L stirred mill with the discs rotating at different speeds to grind aluminium hydroxide powders with different sized glass beads. The results showed that the grinding process followed the first order kinetics and the grinding rate increased with increasing disc speeds. While 4 mm glass beads had slightly larger grinding rates than 2 mm and 6 mm glass beads, the differences were generally within 5%, indicating their weak dependence. On the other hand, the energy consumption increased significantly for the large grinding media. simulations based on the combined discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach were performed under similar conditions. The simulated flow patterns and power draws were comparable to those measured. The total impact energy, which is the summation of all collision energy, had a unified power law relationship with the grinding rate for all grinding conditions. It is expected that the ratio of total impact energy and input power, which decreased for larger grinding media in the present study, can be used to describe the grinding efficiency. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Collaborative beamforming (CB) is introduced in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to improve the transmission power and the energy efficiency of the networks. Using a subset number of nodes from a network of sensors, they collectively transmit a common message with different proper weights to an intended location. Different geometrical location of the subset of nodes will produce different transmission gains. Due to erratic deployment of the sensor nodes in the networks, the assignment for the sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks is vital to achieve better array pattern synthesis. In this paper, a node selection method based on uniform circular array is presented. simulation and performance analysis are carried out to demonstrate the beam pattern performance of uniform circular in performing collaborative beamforming. © 2012 IEEE.
