Collaborative beamforming (CB) is introduced in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to improve the transmission power and the energy efficiency of the networks. Using a subset number of nodes from a network of sensors, they collectively transmit a common message with different proper weights to an intended location. Different geometrical location of the subset of nodes will produce different transmission gains. Due to erratic deployment of the sensor nodes in the networks, the assignment for the sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks is vital to achieve better array pattern synthesis. In this paper, a node selection method based on uniform circular array is presented. simulation and performance analysis are carried out to demonstrate the beam pattern performance of uniform circular in performing collaborative beamforming. © 2012 IEEE.

Wireless spectrum is considered a limited and valuable communications resource as it influences productivity, security and our daily lives. The usage of the wireless spectrum has been given much research focus due to its limited capacity. There is currently a large amount of white spaces and spectrum holes left unused. Therefore, researchers are motivated to invent methods to utilize the spectrum more efficiently and opportunistically. Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) is a method which adapts its transmitting parameters according to the channel state and it is used in various modern wireless communications to maximize spectrum efficiency and minimize error rate. One of the driving strengths of AMC is the Signal-To-Noise Ratio (SNR) estimation and feedback channel for adaptation. Sudden time-varying channel degrading effects sometimes require the transmission link to react appropriately so it can minimize the Bit Error Rate (BER). Thus, the objective of this paper introduces an AMC scheme which utilizes a simple moments based SNR estimator and punctured convolutional coding for spectral and quality improvement for the wireless channel. © 2012 IEEE.

Normalised cuts algorithm requires massive similarity measurement computation for image segmentation. Since a digital camera at present has the capability to produce high resolution image, it will be inevitably that resizing image into suitable resolution at which the algorithm can perform image segmentation with minimal burden. While retaining the important features in the images, natural images are likely to be restricted for resizing them into a particular smaller resolution. Dividing an image into equal size of regions (named as image cells) for the segmentation is proposed here to solve the problem of missing important features when the image resolution is overly reduced. Gradually, the locally segmented clusters from the image cells are taken for second stage segmentation to merge them up globally. In this paper, experimental results using the mentioned method are shown. Experiment shows that it is capable to produce reasonable segmented clusters based on the proposed approach.

Vibration Control of a Plate Subjected to Impulsive Force by Plate-Type Dynamic Vibration Absorbers

This paper examines modelling of the dynamics of a plate by plate type dynamics vibration absorber subjected to a localized periodic impulsive excitation. An analytical solution of the modal equation is proposed and validated using direct numerical simulation of the basic equations. The basics equations are solve numerically using fourth order Runge Kutta algorithm. Various types of dynamic absorbing plate are tested to optimize the control efficiency. Particular attentions have been paid on the effects of localization of external forces on the dynamics response of the system under control. Ours findings demonstrate that a good achievement of control strategy should follow the above mentioned analysis.

In order to understand the complicated in-furnace phenomena of pulverized coal injection in ironmaking blast furnaces, a three-dimensional CFD model has been developed to simulate the gas-particle behaviors in not only raceway cavity but also the surrounding coke packed bed under practical conditions. The model considers two different fuels, pulverized coal and coke bed. The model is validated against the measurements in terms of coal burnout and gas composition, respectively. The typical in-furnace phenomena are simulated. Then an array of parametric study is carried out to evaluate the effects of local porosities of different coke bed zones. The qualitative and quantitative analysis is conducted. The results indicate that the local porosities of different coke bed zones can affect the coal burnout and gas composition differently: significantly in the deadman zone but insensitive in the dripping zone. In addition, the present model is able to provide a more reliable indicator to describe coal burnout, i.e. burnout over raceway surface, rather than burnout only along the centerline. The model is expected to be useful for understanding the flow-thermo-chemical behaviors and then optimizing the PCI operation in full-scale blast furnaces. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Adaptive modulation techniques in wireless communications are paramount technologies designed to thrive in fading and noisy environments. Methods as such require an accurate estimate of the channel condition at the receivers' end in order for the transmitter to adapt appropriately. With that in mind, a communication link which changes the degree of modulation scheme according to the estimated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values is proposed. Hence, the objective of the system is to achieve acceptable quality in a changing communication link. In this paper, spectral efficiency and average bit error rate of the overall system is measured. Monte Carlo simulations of different signals and channel conditions corroborate our analysis and discussion.

Network Coding has been proven to be a method that will increase the throughput of network. Network coding will perform an XOR operation in the intermediate nodes to improve the throughput of the network. The simulation of network coding in AODV to search for the route to destination will be conducted in MATLAB. This paper introduces the development of simulation to illustrate the performance of network coding in wireless ad hoc network. The simulation will calculate the transmit packet time according to the size of the packet. Lastly, average network throughput performance between AODV network without network coding and network with network coding is shown and compared.

There is a challenge to segment the medical image which is often blurred and consists of noise. The objects to be segmented are always changing shape. Thus, there is a need to apply a method to automated segment well the objects for future analysis without any assumptions about the object's topology are made. In general, when performing pregnancy ultrasound scanning, obstetrician needs to find out the best position or angle of the foetus and freeze the scene. The obstetrician will click on the crown and the rump of the foetus to get the foetus length. The segmentation technique applied is level set method. A variational level set algorithm has been successfully implemented in medical image segmentation (Xray image, MRI image and ultrasound image). The results showed the level set contour evolved well on the low contrast and noise consisting medical image, especially the ultrasound image.

This paper aims optimise the exothermic batch productivity while minimise the waste production by manipulating the fluid temperature and fluid flow rate. During the process, a large amount of heat is released rapidly when the reactants are mixed together. The exothermic behaviour causes the reaction to become unstable and consequently poses safety concern to the plant personnel. Commonly, the optimisation of the batch process is based on the predetermined optimal reference temperature profile. However, this reference profile is unable to limit the waste production effectively. Therefore, multivariable genetic algorithm (MGA) is proposed in this work to optimise the productivity of the process without referring to the predetermined reference profile. The results show that the MGA is able to harvest more than 80 % of yield in handling human error and equipment failure.
