Syngas to higher alcohols using Cu-based catalyst - A simulation approach

Higher alcohols production from syngas through chemical route has gained attention over the last decade because of characteristics such as: short-time reaction, abundant and lower price feedstocks, the use of lignin (a biomass component that is hardly used) and the almost complete conversion of the initial feedstock. In this route, cleaned and reformed synthesis gas (syngas), formed of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2) is catalytically converted into a mixture of alcohols that after purification can be used as fuel, solvent, or as feedstock for other processes. In this particular case study we use a Cu-based (Cu-O-ZnO-Zr-Fe-Mo-Th-Cs) catalyst, which consists of a modified methanol synthesis catalyst, so as to conceive, simulate, optimize, and analyze a small scale syngas-to-higher alcohols production plant (process capacity of 100 kmo/h of pure syngas). We assume that the WGS (water-gas-shift) reaction reaches equilibrium conditions and the alcohols production follows the ASF (Anderson-Schulz-Flory) distribution. The main advantage shown by this catalyst is the absence of water production, since all the water is consumed by the WGS reaction, on the other hand, the same reaction produces CO2that can be recovered only coupling another process in order to produce more CO. The final product separation (methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol and pentanol) is facilitated by the absence of water. After process design and optimization, an energy and yield analysis is discussed while pointing possible solutions and next steps regarding the sustainability of the process. Simulation, analysis and optimization of sugar concentration in an in situ gas stripping fermentation process for bioethanol production

Ethanol production in Brazil is carried out through biological routes where yeasts are generally employed. For greater flexibility, ethanol production is linked to the sugar production. In this configuration, the main byproduct of sugar production (molasses containing about 50 % wt in sugars) can be widely used for ethanol production. Nonetheless, due to strong ethanol inhibition, molasses dilution is necessary in order to maintain ethanol concentration in the broth below the threshold of toxicity at the end of fermentation. Hence, large amounts of water are added to the process resulting in higher costs of separation and plant design (since larger equipments are necessary). One way to solve these problems is couple fermentation to a continuous product removal technique such as in situ gas stripping fermentation process. This simple and inexpensive technique, which consists basically of a fermentor, a condenser and a pump for circulating gases, is used to remove volatile inhibitors continuously. In this work, in situ gas stripping on lab-scale was studied using ASPEN PLUS® V.7.3 aiming to evaluate the impact of sugar concentration in feed stream on the overall process. The gas flow rate was varied for three different levels of sugar concentration in the feed (20, 30 and 40 % wt).The main goal was to evaluate the sugar concentration ranges where more ethanol can be stripped compared with water, maintaining the ethanol concentration below the threshold of toxicity in the broth. Optimized sugar concentration were found after analyzing the following output variables: ethanol stripped (%), ethanol concentration in condensate (w/w), ethanol recovered (%), selectivity and ethanol mass fraction in the broth (w/w). The flow shop scheduling problem with limited buffers is widely existing in manufacturing systems. This article proposes a hybrid discrete harmony search algorithm for the problem to minimize total flow time. The algorithm presents a novel discrete improvisation and a differential evolution scheme with the job-permutation-based representation. Moreover, the discrete harmony search is hybridized with the problem-dependent local search based on insert neighborhood to balance the global exploration and local exploitation. In addition, an orthogonal experiment design is employed to provide a receipt for turning the adjustable parameters of the algorithm. Comparisons based on the Taillard benchmarks indicate the superiority of the proposed algorithm in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.

Most of industrial model-based predictive control algorithms are suffering from heavy computation burden when solving QR optimizations and on-line matrixes multiplication within a limited sampling *** order to optimize this problem,a fast algorithm is proposed,which the real-time values are modulated into bit streams to simplify the multiplication as the bit based operation could extremely decrease the compute *** addition,the control variables are deduced from the prediction horizon to the current control actuation approximately by a recursive relation instead of figuring all of the control actuations out strictly to reduce the matrix dimension.

This paper studies a synthesis approach to predictive control for networked control systems with data loss and quantization. An augmented Markov jump linear model with polytopic uncertainties is modeled to describe the quantization errors and possible data loss. Based on this model, a predictive control synthesis approach is developed, which involves online optimization of a infinite horizon objective and conditions to deal with system constraints. The proposed MPC algorithm guarantees closed-loop mean-square stability and constraints satisfaction. © 2014 TCCT, CAA.

This paper considers the state feedback stabilization over finite-state fading channels, where the stochastic characteristic of time-varying fading channels is assumed to be driven by a finite-state random process. The finite-state process is used to represent different channel fading amplitudes and/or to model different configurations of the overall physical environment. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for stabilization over finite-state Markov fading *** the case of finite-state i.i.d. fading channels, explicit network requirements for stabilization are presented for both single-input case and multi-input case. Our results cover some existing results as special cases.

This paper investigates the problem of joint design of a receding horizon control and the medium access scheduling for quantized control systems over limited bandwidth networks, in which only a limited number of actuators are allowed to communicate with the controller at each time instant. By introducing a communication scheduling matrix to describe the medium access status and considering the influence of quantizers, we can model the control system as a switched model with structured norm-bounded uncertainties. The stabilizing channels with guaranteed stability are chosen first. Based on the stabilizing channels, a receding horizon control strategy with optimal dynamic resource allocation is proposed by minimizing the upper bound on a finite-horizon quadratic performance index. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the developed method finally.
